gxti··on Linus vs C++, again
It's the "man" section. According to "man man", 2 is the section for system calls. Often you'll have manpages for the same name under different sections, for example sync(1) is a command while sync(2) a system call (which, unsurprisingly, the sync command uses).
gxti··on Native port of ZFS for Linux
Good, because it's an experimental filesystem. Don't write it off completely though, because all of those (except for "cache layer" -- wtf does that even mean?) are planned.
gxti··on AI That Picks Stocks Better Than the Pros
Another reason that computerized trading (and speculative trading as well) is theoretically good for the market is that it makes prices more informative. If a trader or computer can successfully predict how a price will move based only on past and present information, then there is an inherent market inefficiency -- the market price is supposed to already reflect all of that information, and only moves when new information becomes available. Of course in reality information does not spread that readily and traders are not completely accurate at estimating prices, so correcting those inaccuracies is quite profitable and helps the market. By selling when a stock is overvalued and buying when it is undervalued, regardless of how that determination was made, the price becomes closer to the fundamental value and thus allows long-term investors to buy and sell at a fair price.
gxti··on Ask HN: Why do no other laptop manufacturers get it?
I know what you mean, I have one of Lian Li's "mini fridge" cases because it has a ludicrous number of HD bays. But I also have an Antec p182, and it's frickin awesome: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129... (slightly newer model)
gxti··on Ask HN: Why do no other laptop manufacturers get it?
Absolutely. My brain must just not be wired right to appreciate Apple's designs because I think MacBooks aren't all that pretty. I liked the look of the iPhone when it first came out because the rest of the cellphone market was hideous, but by now Apple has fallen behind and even with the 4th gen phone the look is somewhat stale.

ThinkPads, on the other hand, have barely changed at all but still look like you can sit down and get some bloody work done.

gxti··on ARM stock rises 25%, Apple bid rumours resurface
> so you can appreciate the percentage increase by eye.

Not quite what you asked for, but Settings -> Vertical Scale -> Logarithmic -- one pixel is the same percentage change no matter the absolute price.

gxti··on There Are No Famous Programmers
The third clause was removed in 1999, although apparently some software is still using the 4-clause form.

OK, so who didn't get 100%?

> It's not like your brain just deletes entire memories; your brain simply does not work that way.

A brain, like any arrangement of atoms, can only hold so many bits of information. The more you cram in there the more degraded older and less intense memories get until you can't recall more than a vague feeling, and eventually nothing at all. Probably one could hold a few memories close to heart and be able to avoid forgetting them, but anything you didn't continually refresh would be gone after the first few hundred years. Often, "forgotten" memories are still hanging around but have nothing to trigger them, but those too must disappear eventually to make room for new stuff.

gxti··on Become a morning person. How to end insomnia for $520.99
This is just one datapoint of course, but I tried this last night and actually woke up at sunrise... then ruined it by going back to sleep for another hour. Looking forward to trying this out for the rest of the week.
gxti··on Are cloud based memory architectures the next big thing?
Buy enough RAM to fit the entire dataset in memory and any database will scream.
gxti··on List of Printers Which Do or Do Not Display Tracking Dots
If the Secret Service is relying on the EFF to figure out which printers don't have tracking dots then they might as well just give up and go home.
gxti··on AT&T's new data plans will ruin the future of mobile
There are certainly huge roadblocks to a market as liquid as gasoline (ahem) but the first step is getting the prices out in the open. "Unlimited" doesn't have a price tag because there's no way of knowing exactly when they'll cut you off, and they most assuredly will, but if they charge by the gigabyte then they don't have any grounds on which to terminate a contract when the customer is already obligated to pay for what they use. I'm embracing this change and hope to see more of it in the future.
