Experienced (10+ yrs) full stack product engineer. Very good at both web & mobile & desktop apps, APIs, Postgres, Linux, mentorship, and communication in general. Touch typist, VIM ninja, refactoring monster. With an academic background of philosophy.

Been developing a lot of different projects for different teams, company types (startups, scale-ups, enterprise) and industries (finance, crypto, digital marketing, automation, online education, e-commerce).

My technical specialty is building simple systems with few moving parts that contain as little accidental complexity as possible. I'm pragmatic but always chase proper implementations at the same time. I don’t easily buy the hype nor subscribe to every new shiny tool & paradigm. I focus on robust & reliable software as much as possible.

My business specialty is caring greatly about understanding your domain, business model, figuring out your product priorities and actually iterating fast. In a world where the majority of software projects fail and the majority of engineering hires disappoint, I am promising you the peace of mind of knowing that you have an actually capable engineer beside you who understands your business model, cares about your investment and is able to make good judgements.

Always looking for interesting & challenging projects and smart people.

Feel free to contact if you don't have the luxury of failure.

gwn7··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Time will tell. You will see that it's not going to happen and realize how naive you were at some point. I promise you.
gwn7··on Trump wins presidency for second time
None of those are true.

Those are lies spread by the mainstream media (which is mostly controlled by leftists) and you are a victim for believing them.

I know that the HN crowd are left-leaning and I'm going to be downvoted like hell. Maybe even flagged, because apparently leftist platforms like censorship.

But I don't have to prove my point nor there is a need to argue.

My point will be proven in the coming months because as time goes by you guys will see that nothing bad will happen to democracy nor women's rights or anything else important. Economy and public health is going to improve among many other things.

You will see. Just pay attention.

Then maybe you will remember and regret downvoting me.

Oh, also: Listen to what the man is saying himself. Not what the mainstream media says he is saying. Try to see past merely Trump & his public image as well. Pay attention to what the people on his team are saying. Great people like RFK Jr, Tulsi, Vivek, and JD. Maybe you will find yourself to be enlightened.

Peace.

gwn7··on Ship faster by building design systems slower (2023)
I agree with the sentiment, but don't appreciate the way you put it (lacks nuance). I think it is obvious that developing custom design systems can sometimes give companies a competitive advantage, hence there might be a non-zero value here. Heavily depends on the product and the target audience.

In any case, the market has your answers. So many people are doing their own design systems. Can all this effort be caused by merely arrogance? There ought to be something else reinforcing this behavior.

gwn7··on Rules of schema growth (2017)
> I think having a central database that directly interfaces with multiple applications is an enormous source of technical debt and other risks, and unnecessary for most organizations.

I think that the operative word here is "over time". So what is meant is not necessarily supporting many applications at the same time, but rather serially.

So the message is supposed to be: Apps come and go as they can be rewritten for so many reasons, but there will be a lot less reasons to redesign / replace a "valuable" database.

gwn7··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (October 2023)
Thank you for the feedback, but all I meant was that "I'm happy to travel to anywhere in the world". I'm only looking for contract jobs (as communicated near the end of my post) and that's why I mentioned visits. I've revised the language of the "willing to relocate" item of my post to make my situation clearer.

gwn7··on Show HN: SQL Dry Runs with SQL Simulator
I'm sure it can't match the flexibility & features your program offers, but a hacker's way would be providing that functionality via a one liner targeting their database. Assuming that dbs.txt contains a list of connection strings and migration.sql contains a set of SQL commands, an example for Postgres would be:

  cat dbs.txt | xargs -I% sh -c 'cat migration.sql | sed "1ibegin;" | sed "\$arollback;" | psql %'
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to shit on your product; just wanted to share the way I accomplish basically the same goal. Congrats on your release and hope it gets the attention it deserves.
gwn7··on Show HN: SQL Dry Runs with SQL Simulator
For dry runs on RDBMS' I usually put the statements I want to test between transaction begin and a rollback statements. Maybe dump some data before rolling back to make analyses and/or comparisons.

I guess this tool probably has more utility though.

gwn7··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
Why couldn't you keep editing your script in your Pi?

Isn't proposing Docker as a solution to this going nuclear?

I think there are some many cheaper things you can do to solve this.

For me this is absolutely no justification for Docker use in this scenario.

gwn7··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
You're mentioning the worst possible scenario.

First of all the answer recommends to use either a Pi or a VPS. If a Pi doesn't cut it for you, just switch to a VPS with sufficient specs for your requirement. Problem solved, now it's viable.

Besides, a significant part of the web can be scraped without resorting to a heavyweight browser such as Chromium. It should always be the last resort. Even if you have to evaluate Javascript (in case of SPAs), there are much cheaper solutions than Puppeteer (JSDOM being an example) which can get the job done most of the time.

As to Docker, I fail to see why you would need Docker for this kind of job, unless you don't know how to do it without Docker.

When there is no portability requirement, the costs of Docker easily surpass its benefits.

...

So no, it's not that what's being recommended in the answer is not viable. You're doing it wrong. Either you're using a Pi when you need to use a VPS or you are introducing unnecessary layers.

gwn7··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
Yes yes yes. I came to post the exact same thing then saw this =)
gwn7··on Wing: A cloud-oriented programming language – request alpha access
> #2 - I once spent 18 months convincing my teammates to move our hottest data set from DynamoDB to RAM. Next time, I won't bother.

Yeah, don't bother. People don't want simplicity. The majority of our tribe are masochists haha

> #3 - Heh. The "N+1" architecture. However many layers your architectural design methodology has, ours has one more. (h/t Spinal Tap).

Exactly

> Is that Twitter you? Good stuff. Like the unique URL for posting CSVs.

Oh no I'm not Gary, sorry =)

gwn7··on Wing: A cloud-oriented programming language – request alpha access
Seems like a reasonable effort and we probably need more of this kind of stuff. But still I think the industry should focus more on educating developers to prevent them from introducing mostly unnecessary accidental complexity to today's typical apps rather than inventing new layers to manage it.
