gw99··on Ryzen 7000 amdgpu boot hang
Yeah this. My old 3700X rig would need to be power cycled 3-4 times before it booted. This turned out to be the Radeon GPU I chucked in it inflaming the boot sequence in some way. Put an nvidia one in and it was fine. The Radeon worked fine on another machine.

Own an M1 MacBook Pro now and never looked back at the hell of custom built PCs favourably.

gw99··on GitHub Copilot, with “public code” blocked, emits my copyrighted code
If this is the new status quo then I suggest we find out how to fuck up the corpus as best as possible.
gw99··on Microsoft’s out-of-date driver list left Windows PCs open to malware attacks
I'm more worried that this is unsurprising to me now rather than it being an issue. The sheer amount of fragmentation, poor engineering, poor commercial decisions and quality issues that surround the Microsoft ecosystem is quite frankly at this point inexcusable.

They really need to get themselves together on the Windows front. Actually all fronts. Even Office is a fucking shit show these days and that was the last bastion of common sense on the platform.

As a former MS dev dating all the way back to the early 1990s, I don't own or work with their platforms as of 2021. My pain threshold isn't high enough. I implore the shareholders to kick the entire board out and install some people with good intentions and clue sticks.

Until then I will be doing my absolute best to steer everyone I know away from the pain.

gw99··on Apple Music and Mercedes-Benz bring immersive Spatial Audio to drivers
I think it's more important that we have tried and tested technology in safety critical devices than be experimented on at the bleeding edge.

Imagine a vehicle that was just a vehicle and not another platform to upsell shit on until the vendors get fed up with it because that's what you're asking for.

Absolutely 100% in the case of vehicles, less is more. Less intelligence, less nondeterminism and definitely less space age.

gw99··on Tesla fires after hurricane raises alarm for Florida officials
It's the leaseholders who handled it. They sent out updated terms for the apartment building which extended insurance exclusions. Not in USA for ref...
gw99··on Tesla fires after hurricane raises alarm for Florida officials
No if the place burns down and there's an EV of any kind in there then they don't pay out. Covers explicitly eBikes and hybrids as well.
gw99··on Tesla fires after hurricane raises alarm for Florida officials
When insurers get on this you know there's a problem. Our insurers void our building insurance if anyone parks an EV in the underground car park...
gw99··on Recovering a password-protected ThinkPad T60
MacBook Air plus insurance :)
gw99··on Zeek is now a component of Microsoft Windows
Hey at least that’s deniably dishonest. We are tangibly dishonest when we fund a conference in our sector and win best product in the sector every year!
gw99··on Zeek is now a component of Microsoft Windows
Ah another thing to assist in the burning of my dick and the flattening of my battery.
gw99··on Recovering a password-protected ThinkPad T60
Anything T470 and before was good IMHO. That excludes the T440 where they screwed up the touchpad arrangement.

I use exclusively apple M1 kit now and keep Linux in the cloud. I honestly can’t go back now to a thinkpad.

gw99··on Recovering a password-protected ThinkPad T60
Triggered yes. Unlocked no.

Probably not. Post covid, the laptop glut is huge and prices have declined to negligible.

gw99··on Recovering a password-protected ThinkPad T60
For a number of years I used to buy BIOS locked thinkpads off ebay for pittance, do this and sell them again as working. Made a small fortune. Most of them were from ex corps who just pulled the disks out and the disposal company didn't know how to do it.

Eventually my wife got fed up of boxes of bits of laptops everywhere.

gw99··on Ask HN: Teaching Greybeard IT
That's a depressingly accurate portrayal of the situation.
gw99··on Ask HN: Teaching Greybeard IT
Most of the time it's no the answer I know, it's how to find it. All I want to do is walk them through the thought process and instil some rigour in diagnostics.
gw99··on Ask HN: Teaching Greybeard IT
Oh man no one cares any more. They fudge through it slowly when there's a problem and forget about it immediately. I've seen teams waste 3 months unable to fix a simple issue and I've walked in and seen it right away. Can I pass these skills on? No because no one gives a fuck. And quite frankly my soul died enough that I don't either. Just over 5000 days until I'm retired.
gw99··on Beacown (Linux WiFi Exploit)
I think we need a vulnerability buzzword bingo.
gw99··on Why wasn’t the steam engine invented earlier? Part III
Same as the old land rovers I used to work on. 2mm was considered miraculous tolerances anywhere. If something didn't line up it usually got hit until it did.
gw99··on Guthib
Some people are waiting to be offended. I used Mighty Boosh as a test image a couple of years back and was told off for it.

Your last line is the current operating position for Microsoft.

They hide this under marketing blogs.

gw99··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
ISO 9001 + 27001 :(
gw99··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
There probably is but ISO certs are just paperwork filed. Reality is different.
gw99··on IKEA’s Crimes Against Cartography
It’s fine. You can take shortcuts in Ikea if you need to. Apple Watch compass helps :). My favourite is entering via the exit and just picking up what you wanted anyway.

Arrive when it opens, leave 10 minutes later.

gw99··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
Just stick an Amazon t shirt on, a reflective yellow waistcoat and a box and you can walk into most SMEs without anyone blinking an eye.

I've seen it done hundreds of times...

gw99··on Users without a cell connection find they can’t get back into their Zipcar
I worry when this is an issue for all cars.

I think I'm going to buy an old series Land Rover and electric convert it myself if that happens.

gw99··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
Not really. They only have 83-90 million users. That's not really a big table, at least in my world...
gw99··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
This shit happens all the time.

Old school one when I was a security consultant for a bit (pre-automated pentest scammers). Medium size regulated fintech. Domain admin passwords and admin accounts were stuck on post it notes on a board in the machine room. If you went over the road to the college, asked to use the toilet, which they seemed fine with, and poked your 200mm lens out of the bathroom window you could snap them all.

Don't assume that level of competence improved with addition of technology.

gw99··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
Oh yes this. It's so easy to critically fuck up an invite into an organisation. If you get typo the username you are potentially compromised. I've seen a couple of near misses on this already.

Note: the invite input box actually autocompletes ALL github usernames.

Good point - got my point the wrong way round.
gw99··on Kodak Is Hiring Film Technicians: ‘We Cannot Keep Up with Demand’
Yeah all over that one. We used these guys to make some slides for us https://www.digitalslides.co.uk/ ... They were loaded into an old Rollei slide projector.
