guytv··on The secret Uganda deal that has brought NSO to the brink of collapse
Advanced technology was once held mainly in the hands of governments. In recent years, corps and mega-corps are getting far more advanced technology than the government has. For governments, this means loss of power. So governments around the world use whatever means they have to prevent such technologies to prolifirate. US govm't tried to stop the export of strong encryption. The it shutdown Facebooks crypto-currency - to prevent FB to have its own global-dollar. That's why the US just waited for the right time to end the party where dollars could buy you cyber abilities only reserved to the NSA and CIA.

It's not about civil rights, it's ont about money laundring, its just about the US trying to keep ahead of everyone else.

guytv··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
Probably try to get your visa anyway, despite what you've heard.

Do what you can do, and hope for the best.

guytv··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
Don't take up chess. it will consume every bit of your free time and give you a new sense of purpose, with lots of frustrations on the path... ;)

Vipassana changed my life for the best. Since my first course, I did a few more, some 10 days, and some 3-day courses which are available only for people who already did the 10 day course.

It made me a better entrepreneur, better father, better spouse.

Like the commenter above stated, there are people who have psychiatric breakdowns following or during such courses. I don't think the Vipassana organization is doing a good job making this information transparent. But, from my anecdotal experience of over 20 years of courses, these cases are very few and far between.

guytv··on LakeFS: Git for data lakes. Branch, merge, revert on top of object storage
Looks mighty interesting.

Going to try it out to see if this can solve my "re-import batches due to corrupt data" vicious cycle.

guytv··on Lost in Thought: Psychological Risks of Meditation
I have been through 3 10-day Goenka retreats, numerous 3-day retreats, and is engaged in daily practice (minimum 1hr/day).

Vipassana meditation have brought positive change to my life. That's why it makes perfect sense to me that it will have some adverse side-effects for some people.

It works i.e. it has positive effects - therefore it must have some negative effects, at least for some people. That's how many things behave in the world, right? In physics its called "action and re-action".

guytv··on Google Play service fee reduced to 15% for the first $1M/year
oh, nice.

I didn't know about it.

It is a huge undertaking, google has services from "simple" things like location, to complex things like face recognition.

guytv··on Google Play service fee reduced to 15% for the first $1M/year
> You know that Android is open source...

Technically Android is OpenSource.

De-facto - its not.

For many many years now Google is adding all non-os functionality into "support" libraries, "Google Services" - the name changes periodically - but the essence is the same: Making sure that any Android that is not "Google certified" won't be able to run Android apps - which all use these libraries - and won't have apps such as YouTube, Gmail, Photos come pre-installed..

guytv··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names (2010)
Reminds me of that time, 30 years ago, that me and a friend were on a trip to Italy, and wanted to send a postcard to our friend back in Jerusalem.

We did not have her exact street address, so we just wrote a postcard address to : "<her full name> building is opposite of the Menora garden".

Postcard was delivered to her.

guytv··on Why did I leave Google or, why did I stay so long?
That would be interesting to see, indeed.

Never got a chance to work with Japanese.

guytv··on Why did I leave Google or, why did I stay so long?
And I had fellow googles spend all their day between PlayStation, gym, restaurants, cafe's, hairdresser etc... without getting any work done.

Israeli here.

cultural gaps are very much alive and kicking

During my career I've worked with people around the world, all in the Tech industry.

Israeli-Californian cultural gap is huge.

It is made worse by the fact that Israelis usually have a good English level, some even have an okay accent - which makes their US counterpart expect them to use the same communication etiquette they are used to.

Californians will go out of their way to avoid any overt conflict.

Israelis see conflict as a valid form of day to day communications.

An Israeli can go out of a meeting thinking he was just being told "yes", while he was given a glaring "no" delivered in the All-American-speak.

guytv··on What I Worked On
Bel is painting in code.

Like all good paintings it goes unnoticed in its time.

It might become a classic in the future, it might be forgotten.

guytv··on What I Worked On
I started reading it, and could not stop. Very well written.

I hope the sub-text I picked up is all in my head, and that everything is fine.

May PG live long and prosper :)

"screenshots and video" YouTube link is broken for me. Anyone managed to watch it? what am I doing wrong?
guytv··on The Kotlin Foundation
I have been programming for 37 years now.

Kotlin is just a joy to read and write.

Usually when working on a new non-trivial task, I first think of the solution, then write it down in pseudo code.

Reading a Java implementation of my original pseudo code - I sometimes feel the actual solution hides below layers of code. The solution is still there, but it is hard to see it.

When comparing the resulting Kotlin code with the original solution written in pseudo - Ir can still be seen clearly.

Kotlin does not get in the way, but still allows me to use strong typing and compile time checks to make sure my code is solid and stable without loosing readability.

It is just great joy, fun, using it.

guytv··on A Statement on Recent Events Between Signal and the Anti-Censorship Community
Censorship and privacy are important issues. So is civilised online debate, and communities learning to work together in a nice way.

I admire the people that put in time and energy to create a safer future for us all.

Hope that this is not going to be taken the wrong way, but whenever I read such threads (and again - I respect all the people involved, their efforts and the importance of this issues) - I can't help but being reminded with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0BpfwazhUA

guytv··on Homebrew 3.0
Homebrew is great!

I love it.

My only complaint is that I never remember 'brew upgrade' from my 'brew update'. which is which.

guytv··on Homebrew 3.0
>Meanwhile providing money for no reason to Homebrew

>wouldn't make business sense. As far Apple is concerned,

>Homebrew works, and providing financial support wouldn't

>make it work better.

Well, I think that funding really smart people running really valuable projects tend to make them even more valuable.

Besides, there's some cosmic Karmic justice if this happens.

guytv··on Ask HN: What does mastery look like in software engineering?
Almost agree. I would say that if this is the case, Pay is local optimisation.

On the long run, if you stay in such a company your market value will by reduced as it is

(a) psychological very difficult to resist such culture to influence your mind, unlimitedly transforming you.

(b) will eventually turn your life into a saga of bitterness and resentment, lower self esteem.

(c) arguably, such a company will ultimately fail in their business.

so you're probably better off take a possible temporary pay reduction for a better happiness and higher pay on the long run.

guytv··on What I’ve Learned in 45 Years in the Software Industry
Team mates, usually know who is a good engineer, and who's not - much more accurately than management. When I was in Google, Perf process was based on peers feedback, and it worked well.
guytv··on Ask HN: Co-founder wants me to leave but won't entertain a buy out offer
If you're willing to buy out his share, I would approach the investor, explain the current dead lock, and get his support to force your partner to do a BMBY (Buy Me Buy You), where you offer him a price per his shares, which he either accepts or have to pay the same sum to you and buy your part.
guytv··on Unix Recovery Legend (1986)
