guytv··on Scrum is a cancer
During a certain phase of my career, I was part of a company that extensively used the Scrum framework.

My takeaway then was that Scrum fosters a modular team management style, which diminishes the dependence on highly skilled individuals.

This approach seemed to offer management a sense of oversight in the software development process, but I didn't stay long enough to determine whether this was actual control and predictability or merely an illusion of it.

guytv··on Searching for Paul C. Pratt
What about other, personal stuff. What do people do to make their passwords to online services, banks, etc... available to their loved ones after they're gone, in a secure way?

guytv··on “Laws” of software estimation for complex work (2021)
If you really want to hit your goal, multiply by π, not by 3!
guytv··on How are you doing?
wow. this is so creative, empathic and resonates with love and compassion. thank you!
guytv··on Tell HN: Playing a text based adventure game with ChatGPT
I just had a great game with chatGPT. i ended up being the king (after killing him), eventually the people of the kingdom revolted, and killed me.
guytv··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
This is one point that worries me about Kotlin (which I like a lot). Is it even practical developing in Kotlin using something other than IntelliJ? All of its toolsets come from the same company, which could kill it one day.
guytv··on What makes Git so hard to use?
>This is because it's a distributed version control system, not just a tool to upload files to GitHub.

99.9% of git users use only one remote. Most of them (>85%?) use GitHub. It's like having your car be super complex to drive to work every day, but if you want, it could also dig a hole in the ground. You never use the damn drill, yet it bothers you every day on your way to work ;)

guytv··on What makes Git so hard to use?
That's actually doable and is what HighFlux is doing.
guytv··on What makes Git so hard to use?
yet one often has to google a command, to make sure what is the correct command, even if they know all about the mechanics of the underlying blob storage.
guytv··on What makes Git so hard to use?
>Because of that I have very little fear of screwing up.

I met an engineer or two that were always feeling like walking on eggshells around git, and every once and a while having to call in the expert to fix their git state, so they get unstuck.

guytv··on What makes Git so hard to use?
Great insight
guytv··on What makes Git so hard to use?
One of the developers of HighFlux here. The deamon is written in rust and was designed and written to have a minimal CPU+Memory footprint.

> I think HighFlux is designed to solve a very limited subset of Git's usage and so they've stripped out a lot of useful commands they don't use and so they can ship a product.

Yes and no. No - once you correlate the user intent with the git commands, you discover that to accomplish one "intent," such as "start working on a feature," - you only need one CLI/UI command: "create WIP". So naturally, many git commands are bundled into one user intent.

Yes - true - we're just starting, so naturally focusing on the most used scenarios, gradually covering more and more cases as we progress. The nice thing is that HighFlux is not only compatible with git but also inter-operable with it, so you can always "go back to git" - until we cover all of the scenarios.

guytv··on What makes Git so hard to use?
Just the ergonomics of git are sometimes mind-boggling. for instance: "git checkout" is used for 3 different things: “switch”, “create branch”, and “revert a file”. Deleting a remote tag is “git push” but a deleting a local one is “git tag -d”. There are many such examples
guytv··on ZX Spectrum BASIC programming (1983)
Me too. I remember going through the "Beyond ZX Spectrum" was it? it had listings of basic programs for "Lunar Lander" and other nice games. With colorful inspiring screenshots of the running games.
guytv··on ZX Spectrum BASIC programming (1983)
This brought back such warm memories. I didn't know any English then, but I just copied programs, ran them, and slowly learned some BASIC and some English while at it. :)
guytv··on Sapling: A new source control system with Git-compatible client
You `clone` your git repository into Sapling. You can then only use the sapling tooling (CLI) until you `push` to GitHub. You can't use `sl` and `git` or git GUI/ IDE plugins on the `sl` clone.
guytv··on Sapling: A new source control system with Git-compatible client
One of the problems with `git`, and it seems that Sapling is no different, is that there is no one-to-one mapping between the user intent and the underlying SCM. For a user intent of "implement feature X", there is no UI to "start a new feature". Instead, one has to translate their requirement to the SCM mental model and issue a series of commands to manipulate a DAG of blob hashes that live in 4 different places simultaneously. (work tree, index, local repository and the remote repository. Highflux allows a simple user requirement to action mapping.

guytv··on Show HN: I made a modern web UI for Hacker News
This is awesome, I'm using it as I type. very refreshing. The only thing that is missing, is that the front page does not show which articles i've already clicked (the link is not grayed), so I can't quickly scan the list.

Thanks! great job!

guytv··on Make better decisions with fewer online meetings
This is intriguing.

Doesn't the CEO / Project lead / DRI at some point just makes a decision and whoever does not agree have to "disagree and commit"?
