guytv··on Show HN: Scooter – Interactive find and replace in the terminal
Am I the only one who thought this could alsop work lik "just" a find tool, only to discover it silently erased that word from all files in the directory without asking for confirmation? This felt riskier than rm -rf.
guytv··on Play Dialog: A contextual turn-taking TTS model like NotebookLM Playground
Ouch. If you know Arabic or Hebrew, try selecting those languages and typing something in—it’s hilarious.

Looks like they’re “testing in production.”

guytv··on Goodbye from a Linux Community Volunteer
Sanctioning individuals who aid a criminal government serves two purposes:

1) it applies pressure on that government and

2) ensures that we don’t indirectly support its crimes.

However, sanctioning an entire population — citizens who are already suffering under a leader who disregards their wellbeing — achieves little and seems more like an act of revenge than a strategic measure.

guytv··on Rip2 – A safer, rust-based rm
I really liked the idea.

Played around with rip2 on my MacOS.

Unfortunately after playing with it for two minutes, the "undo" and "scance" functionality seemed to break:

I have opened a bug https://github.com/MilesCranmer/rip2/issues/54].

am I doing something wrong?

guytv··on Hezbollah hand-held radios detonate across Lebanon, sources say
while blowing up a one-way comm device might make sense to intel agencies and countries, I am curious about the decision to blow up hand-helds instead of listening in on them undetected.
guytv··on Import and Export Markdown in Google Docs
All of them. It should have been implemented years ago. Using GDocs after using notion for a few weeks feels like going back in time.
guytv··on Import and Export Markdown in Google Docs
when did google become sooo sloooow implementing trivial features, and then not even shipping a complete set of markdown?!
guytv··on The New Inflection
I asked ChatGPT to summarize, this is what it came up with:

* Inflection shifts focus to AI studio business, developing custom AI models for commercial use.

* Plans to host Inflection-2.5 on Microsoft Azure, with plans for other cloud platforms.

* API launch soon, sign-ups for early access open.

* Co-founders Mustafa and Karén to start Microsoft AI, leaving Inflection.

* Sean White appointed new CEO; Reid Hoffman remains on board.

* No immediate changes to Pi service; privacy and data policies unchanged.

guytv··on GoboLinux
Was a linux distro that's "source based" (i.e. no package manager) even a viable choice for real world server / desktop setup?
guytv··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
I run my hobby projects on GCP. There's a daily spend limit you can set.
guytv··on Laughing Off the Dark Mode Lobby
I have another one: Vim or Emacs?
guytv··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
I've been using Anki for around two years to learn Arabic vocabulary. It's an excellent tool that has helped me remember and continuously recall thousands of words. Some strategies I've found particularly effective are:

- Focusing on memorizing short sentences or phrases instead of isolated words. - Regularly adding new words, at least weekly, to keep the learning process engaging and not monotonous. - Including only words that I actually come across and learn in my daily life, which significantly aids in retention—possibly because I can recall the context in which I first heard them. - Installing AnkiDroid on my phone to make the most of idle times like commuting or waiting in lines for practice.

guytv··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
I've noticed that sticking exclusively to words I already know results in boredom, leading me to skip several days. This typically ends with me needing to catch up in a lengthy session (40 minutes to an hour), which seems less effective for memory retention.

Now, I make it a point to introduce new words at least weekly, which maintains my interest and reduces boredom. The challenge of new words, balanced with the familiarity of known ones, creates an engaging experience, much like a well-designed game with a mix of easy and challenging elements. This approach keeps me motivated.

Additionally, actively using the language by conversing with native speakers greatly enhances my motivation. The positive feedback and tangible understanding of its value significantly boost my commitment to learning.

guytv··on Show HN: Apple II clock using interrupts from physical pendulum clock
This is awesome!

Also, a heads-up to OP: the personal website linked from your GitHub account appears to be down.

guytv··on CVE-2023-40547 – avoid incorrectly trusting HTTP headers
Using the 'goto' keyword brings back lots of memories after all these years.
guytv··on Notion Calendar
> FWIW: Cron and Amie both sit on top of Google Calendar. They're just better frontends. So it's not really an "either-or" type decision.

That was the part I was missing for even considering trying them out. will do now :D

guytv··on Notion Calendar
how does it compare to google calendar? From the video, it seems to have almost identical UI. is that indeed the case?
guytv··on The golden age of Kotlin and its uncertain future

guytv··on Asking your customers what they want doesn't work
Though not immediately relevant, it's pertinent to bring up "The Mom Test" (https://www.momtestbook.com/) book. This book offers insights into conducting customer interviews without inadvertently guiding them towards giving the answers you want to hear, or asking them to forecast whether they'll use your product.
guytv··on IDEs we had 30 years ago
Ah, this takes me back.

Turbo Pascal and Turbo Prolog - those were the days. Borland had the greatest products, and the accompanying books were always well written, used beautiful fonts, and, not less important, smelled nice.

If my memory serves me right, Borland even released their Text User Interface (TUI) library for developers to use in their own applications.

Fond memories indeed!

guytv··on The Apollo Syndrome

guytv··on Show HN: Open-source macOS AI copilot using vision and voice

guytv··on Purple Llama: Towards open trust and safety in generative AI
In a somewhat amusing turn of events, it appears Meta has taken a page out of Microsoft's book on how to create a labyrinthine login experience.

I ventured into ai.meta.com, ready to log in with my trusty Facebook account. Lo and behold, after complying, I was informed that a Meta account was still not in my digital arsenal. So, I crafted one (cue the bewildered 'WTF?').

But wait, there's a twist – turns out it's not available in my region.

Kudos to Microsoft for setting such a high bar in UX; it seems their legacy lives on in unexpected places."

guytv··on ZX Spectrum BASIC interpreter written in Kotlin
Hehe. I actually did. My last project was all in Rust.

I'm very ambivalent about it.

guytv··on Fake recruiter lured aerospace employee with trojanized coding challenge
Off-topic: Given that state cyber entities maintain networks isolated from the internet, how do they adapt to the rise of tools like Co-Pilot and ChatGPT in the software engineering landscape? This kind of security setup inherently restricts access to such tools, potentially slowing their pace. Thoughts?

guytv··on Rule of Three
I am using rule of two. I refactor at the second appearance. I started doing this when programming Ruby on Rails a few years back, where DRY (Don't repeat yourself) was a big thing there.
guytv··on Amazon acquires Fig
... and ther's a big difference in taxation.
guytv··on Amazon acquires Fig
If the arrangement involved both a tech purchase and a contractual obligation for employees to stay with AWS for a set period, simply saying "Fig was acquired" wouldn't be accurate. Given that Amazon is a publicly traded company, making such misleading statements is a no-go.
