gusgus01··on The dead children we must see
You can in the US too. Although I'm not sure if he was drunk.

gusgus01··on Layoffs.fyi
There's definitely still a discussion around the concept of constructive dismissal that could be had. Although a lot of that has to do with the exact parameters of the RTO, so it would be company to company.
gusgus01··on The real cost of a preventive health scan goes well beyond the price tag
I'm interested in those studies. Do you have them handy or will I need to resort to some Google fu?

gusgus01··on Ever Given report highlights Suez Canal pilots’ role in grounding
That's a different ship and different captain: Ever Forward and Captain Steven Germac.

The ship in the Suez Canal was Ever Given and Captain Krishnan Kanthavel.

gusgus01··on Turning my hobby into a business made me hate it
This whole discussion reminds me about the conflicting studies around the correlation or lack thereof of money earned and happiness. There was recently another paper about it that re-analyzed the data, so not a meta analysis, but an interesting example of study design and statistic interpretation: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2208661120#executive-s...
gusgus01··on Iceland: The emerging tech-ecosystem of the Nordics
Idk if it's considered a lot or not, but this source estimates transportation to Hawaii to increase the price of goods by a max of about 7.5%, while in all likelihood it's much less due to modern shipping.

gusgus01··on Two men got jobs at Amazon just to steal copies of Zelda
That's the simplified question that's the basis for Deontological ethics. Further, there are other philosophies concerning ethics that help to flesh out the impossibility that that creates in modern life.
gusgus01··on A college student reached $64k/mo in 6 months by being an AI first mover
Well the question wasn't "What's a system that could happen in the USA", it was specifically asking about theoretical systems.
gusgus01··on Who regulates the regulators? We need to go beyond review-and-approval
Why would they check that the guards are in place when they can reject the claim after an accident happens because the guard wasn't in place?

Who regulates the insurers?

gusgus01··on New Yorkers want to stop landlords from using facial recognition
This comment feels like it's butting up against the snark/flamebait HN guidelines. More than half of it is lambasting an exaggerated, fictional character.
gusgus01··on New Yorkers want to stop landlords from using facial recognition
I'd say the fact that they write-off repeated examples of existing systems that are deployed commercially failing, and then also haven't responded with any real world examples of systems that are "nearly foolproof" as a pretty good indicator of arguing a hypothetical.
gusgus01··on Photos from the SpaceX Debris Field
The article actually specifically calls it out as not endangered, so not sure where your quote is from.
gusgus01··on LSD: Not Even Once
I had a similar thought. I talk about how delicious Japanese, Korean, Indian, etc food is, but don't warn people that .23% of Americans are allergic to Sesame oil which is used often in those cuisines. Same can be said about products that contain say peanuts. Would you say people aggressively pretend like those foods do no harm if they aren't caveating their love of it with facts about allergy rates and impact? Further, there was a very long discussion on this forum about the sesame warning being mandated and whether that was government overreach or not.
gusgus01··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
Elsewhere it looks like SVB was required to be used as per other commenters in this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35129692

So yeah, not a better interest rate but the ability to get a venture debt line at all was predicated in banking at SVB.

gusgus01··on Van Life in Japan
Well there's at least one person who has: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwRjO3kHxU4

He mentions renovation companies as well as builders who will undertake renovations. He has many more videos detailing the process. However, being a youtuber does open up possibilities that aren't common.

gusgus01··on PagerDuty to Lay Off 7% of Staff; Revenue Officer to Exit
"I switched jobs" lets you plan, eg a small gap in unemployment to reduce missed paychecks or to minimize chance of needing COBRA.

"My employer laid me off" doesn't and adds on the implications of a lay off in your field of work, so you get to start your search after being unemployed and possibly in a field with many others looking for jobs.

gusgus01··on The skilled trades haven't caught as a career choice with Gen Z
Here is the bls publication "Union Wages and Hours: Building Trades" from 1950: https://fraser.stlouisfed.org/files/docs/publications/bls/bl...

Compared to the median tradesmen salary it has not kept up to inflation: https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes472061.htm

But to be quite honest, those are exact comparisons, but it was what I found in like 5 minutes.

gusgus01··on U.S. moves to bar noncompete agreements in labor contracts
There are a lot of requirements that need to be met to make non-competes enforceable in MD, eg must meet salary bar, geographic location and duration must be specified, etc.

But I don't think it requires paying the employee during the non-compete time.

gusgus01··on The cost of being poor: Why it costs so much to be poor in America
I'll need to find a better source because I remember an actual study, but is it that they don't have executive functioning skills or is it that being poor affects their executive functioning skills via the constant stress: https://borgenproject.org/psychological-effects-poverty/
gusgus01··on Did insurance fire brigades let uninsured buildings burn?
Interestingly, something similar happens with maritime law as to what was alluded to in the article and in this post. Similar to the competition and chaos caused by "First to respond and put it out", certain salvage companies will ignore Coast Guard warnings that a boat is already accounted for, that the insurance company has already hired a salvage company to reclaim the boat, and instead other salvage companies will try to hurry out to the boat and claim it. Similar to the Terry Pratchett quote, salvage companies will fortuitously find that your boat detached from a mooring ball and drifted to sea if it's left unmanned for long periods of time.

So while a pretty good system, it's not without its flaws and perverse incentives.

gusgus01··on Asia’s advanced economies now have lower birth rates than Japan
I recently watched this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/_pAJMdx14V0

As an American, that delivery is comparatively cheap and extravagant, but it's hardly free.

gusgus01··on The Child Is the Teacher: A Life of Maria Montessori
I'm not sure there's a way to not start learning from birth. Avoiding systems of education won't stop a child from being shaped from birth, it just means that the "system" used to do the shaping is a hodge-podge of influences and decisions.

I guess I don't see the connection between acknowledging that children begin to learn from birth and you need to be aware of that in order to educate them, as well as understanding that education affects the end result on both a mental and emotional level and the jump to it being a system that produces workers that fit in whatever the current regime needs.

gusgus01··on The cyanide tooth is a cold war fairy-tale (2018)
For botulinum, it's the toxin that causes botulism which can be viewed here: https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/symptoms.html

For saxitoxin, it's the toxin that's best known for causing paralytic shellfish poisoning.

TL;DR: it attacks the bodies nerves and leads to muscle paralysis and can result in paralysis of the muscles needed to breath.

gusgus01··on FTC seeks to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard
There's plenty of turtling for Terran and Protoss in SC2. Defense tech like cannons, planetarys, shield batteries, and bunkers help. It's definitely not fool proof but is classically something people struggle against.

I think a larger issue is that there's like 3-5 games to get ranked and then a bit more to get really ranked properly. And by SC2 design the early game is resource constrained so decisions are important and even with the right decisions execution is hard.

gusgus01··on Elixir Sulfanilamide
I'm not saying expertise == good decision making, I'm saying there's a greater chance of an expert making the correct decision than a layman. That article also only talks about how experts can "double down" on mistakes (and only overprecision) when there is negative feedback, it doesn't comment on the validity of their decisions as compared to layman.

Isn't that like the perfect example of comparing apples to oranges? Wouldn't the danger of trusting a doctor require comparing the outcome of trusting a doctor to the outcome of not trusting a doctor?

gusgus01··on Elixir Sulfanilamide
I've seen outrage about PFAS, eg the recent rainwater isn't safe to drink according to the EPA articles. There's also been many campaigns over the years about various chemical additives, eg BPA. You've also got lots of people rallying against user/overuse of pesticides and herbicides. I'd wager it's less that the Sacklers are an easy target (as shown by the continued lack of any consequences), but more that it's a slow build up of anger over the continued abuse of people for profit.

Also, people are not stupid for trusting doctors. Are you not supposed to listen to professionals with usually more than a decade more of education in a specific field than you?

gusgus01··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
French fries are not the National Dish of the USA, and it was done in the cafeterias in Congress (as well as a few other zealous restaurants). But to portray it as a country renaming their national dish is an over-exaggeration.
