gus_massa··on The reciprocal sum of the prime-prefix-free numbers converges [pdf]
Sorry for the delay. Now I had some time to skim the proof, but obviously not time to verify all the results. Some assorted remarks:

* I totally forgot the second log in sum(1/primes) ~= log(log(N)). It's nice to see numerical experiments, but now I realize I had to agree that it's difficult to get a huge number even in the well known case that is infinite.

* The article says that the result of the version with the binary prefix is finite but version with the ternary prefix is infinite. Do you have some numerical experiments? I'd love to see a graphic with the correct amount of logs in both axes to show the difference of behaviour.

* IIUC, the result of the version with quaternary prefix is infinite too, but the result should be comparable to the result of the binary prefix. At least quaternary(N)>binary(N). [I'm not sure if ¿ternary(N)>binary(N)?. Looks difficult.] So it's totally posible (and perhaps obvious) that quaternary(N) is unbounded in spite binary(N) is bounded. It's not very intuitive, but I think I saw something very slightly similar in the past and I got surprised too.

* I'm still not sure why it uses the RH, but it looks like you really thought about it (importing lemma 2.1 and remark 7.1), so I guess I will not be able to remove the RH skimming the paper.

How is that possible? I expect the online version to be slower than the native version.

gus_massa··on Ask HN: Is Freelancing Dead After AI?
I'm not freelancing, so I don't know the market. Anyway:

> People don’t want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole!

If “AI can do it” then they don't have to call you. If they call you is because AI can't do it for now, or they can't prompt the AI correctly. So I guess there is a market for now.

Yep. This has interesting magnetic properties.

In magnetic materials, you must calculate separately the current with spin up and spin down and there ara meny interesting applications. My favorite is[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_magnetoresistance

[1] Was. Because it has used for hard disks (see the applications section). Now SSD ruins the interesting anecdote.

gus_massa··on The reciprocal sum of the prime-prefix-free numbers converges [pdf]
Just for reference, the sum of all primes is infinite https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divergence_of_the_sum_of_the_r... so this result is not obvious.

Anyway, I think it's weird it depends on the Riemann Hypothesis.

Do you have some numerical test for intervals like sum up to 1000, up to 10000, up to 100000, up to 1000000, ... ?

gus_massa··on Scorched Planets: "Scorched Earth" but in space with planetary gravity effects
I had too much physics in my life so my brain is screaming "Is energy and angular momentum conserved here???". I'm not sure if I'm a typical user :) What I dislike about influence areas is that sometimes small changes in the direction or speed makes big changes in the trajectory.

About your game, three feature request:

* I'm not sure if it's a good idea to start the first game with so many weapons. I understand it's more fun, but not knowing what they do and the cost is confusing.

* In the weapon buying screen, it would be nice to have a visual representation of the explosion. (This looks like a very hard change. I'm not sure if you are going to add more features.)

* In the weapon buying screen, I prefer that the list is not cyclic, i.e. if I click down it stops when the list ends instead of cycling to the more expensive weapons again.

It takes forever to load (1 minute?) but it's fun.

Are you simulating real gravity or some quick method that consider the closest planet?

gus_massa··on Physicists identify 'octupolar' magnetism, with implications for quantum tech
On one hand the article oversells how weir this is. For electric charge this is quite usual https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multipole_expansion and magnetism is not so different.

On the other hand, some of these materials get actual applications after a few years. At least for me, it's very hard to guess if this one will be useful.

Most of the time it's better to post a single technical story instead of the whole site. Something like:

* https://universodrago.com/publications/drones-fpv-de-carrera... It looks better.

* https://universodrago.com/publications/reloj-nixie-led-rgb Did you build it? If you build it, the steps may be interessting.

* https://universodrago.com/publications/vigia-teledeteccion-o... Did you build it? It looks more interesting but I'm worry people will argue about the political angle.

gus_massa··on With most information hidden, the game Stratego had stumped AI until now
Yes, but I'm surprised the chess bots are good even with impossible pieces combinations.

[spoiler alert]

My favorite strategy for Ches39 is using 13 bishops in the 4 and 3 ranks. That is outside the training set, or at least any sensible training set. (Protip: Learn how to check mate with only two bishops of different colors.)

For the reverse I'd like to give the AI 13 knights, that would overwhelm any human player. I never dare to try it.

And I think the wall of 39 pawns is a good idea for a human, but for some reason the AI beats me anyway.

gus_massa··on With most information hidden, the game Stratego had stumped AI until now
Like once a month, a different person submit a variant of chess to HN. I played a lot of chess when I was a kid, so I try most of them.

IIUC most of them just put a standard chess engine over the new rules. I consider I'm not a bad player, but the engines destroys me, even with the weird rules.

* https://chess39.com/ I only win if the computer start with a very bad initial position and in the first 2 or 3 moves I get huge advantage, because I slowly lose the advantage. Hopefully the game ends before I lose all the initial wins. Sometimes the computer "gives up" and exchange pieces unnecessary, that is not the optimal strategy when you assume the opponent (in this case me) is a worse player. Perhaps it's necessary to train to AI to pay assuming the opponent may blunder.

* [Another variant I can't find now. Each piece changes when it moves P->N->B->R-Q->P->...] The changes of the pieces confuses the engine too much and it's easy to win using some tricks. I guess some variants are just too different and need a lot of additional training.

You can blame MS for adding a prng in the code. But imagine an LLM that check from time to time the price of electricity and GPU available and decide to change the internal mode of launch activities in a TODO list, or use spare capacity to generate a random tunes that you like to hear while prompting.
