guimplen··on DoorDash and Waymo launch autonomous delivery service in Phoenix
Oh wow, it almost like Yandex delivery in some districts of Moscow. Though there it is a land drone.
guimplen··on Is it possible to allow sideloading and keep users safe?
This is so blatantly wrong. On macs it became a little bit hrder very recently (you need to tick a checkmark in the system setting to allow untrusted program running) otherwise you just need to run the program once via right-click. On most user-friendly linux distros you can just run installer of any program.
guimplen··on A Guide to Undefined Behavior in C and C++ (2010)
The first example (signed integer overflow) is no longer valid in newer standards of C. Now it should use the two-complement semantics and no UB.
guimplen··on You could have invented Fenwick trees
All the references are on the wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenwick_tree
guimplen··on You could have invented Fenwick trees
While it might be ok to use colloquially the term, "Fenwick trees" since it became a common name, calling them "a Fenwick's work" and not mentioning Ryabko is a clear misattribution.
guimplen··on A simple proof that pi is irrational [pdf] (1946)
The proof that e is irrational is very simple, follows from its famous expansion as a sum of inverse factorials. Non-algebraicity is a can of worms though.
guimplen··on Why No IPv6?
I thought the problem with the IPv6 is that it incorporates a lot of bloat compared to the IPv4.
guimplen··on Learning Theory from First Principles [pdf]
I think the text is geared towards people with some mathematical background who want to understand learning theory. Besides it is clearly stated that this chapter is a review (so its assumed that you learned or will learn these things elsewhere).
guimplen··on How Euler Did It, by Ed Sandifer
He worked in Russia more than in any other country and died in St Petersburg being a Russian citizen.
guimplen··on How Euler Did It, by Ed Sandifer
Yeah, the greatest Russian mathematician.
guimplen··on 95% of container ships are now going around the Southern Tip of Africa
In all recent US wars civilian casualties vastly outnumber military ones. In the Ukrainian war civilian casualties constitute less than 10% of overall casualties. Outstanding precision for a rusty hatchet.
guimplen··on Pasteur and the beer of national revenge (2017)
You are being nitpicky about the names while missing the substance. The first battle was the French capture of Saarbrucken. So no, Prussia did not "attacked first".
guimplen··on Pasteur and the beer of national revenge (2017)
>Germany attacked France in July 1870

It was France that declared war on Germany.

guimplen··on In the Asian Flu of 1957-58, they rejected lockdowns (2021)
Are any of those things bad by themself or in combination?
guimplen··on Perfectly good M1 MacBooks are being scrapped because of Activation Lock [video]
It's no "the poor" its the thieves. Are you insinuating that all poor people are thieves?
guimplen··on The E-graph extraction problem is NP-complete
The problem is not stated clearly.
guimplen··on Shannon’s Source Coding Theorem (2020)
This universal prior is both theoretically useful and help conceptualize the real-world compression techniques.
guimplen··on Shannon’s Source Coding Theorem (2020)
This is a misconception. The main result in the Kolmogorov complexity theory that there is precisely the "universal prior" that comes simply from the notion of computability.
guimplen··on Apartment rents fall as new supply hits market
A proper city has plenty of places for children to play even in its center. But maybe I'm just an outdated european.
guimplen··on Brew Is a Bad Neighbor
Your comment would be relevant if the guy written something to the devs. He has a sacred right to rant on his own page as he likes.
guimplen··on JNumPy: Writing high-performance C extensions for Python in minutes
in posix (so in any reasonable C implementation) printf is thread-safe by default, so your comment doesn't make much sense.
guimplen··on The Unreasonableness of Math Is Context Independence
Why it is even relevant? Godel's incompletness theorem applies to almost any strong formal system with self-referential abilities, so if you want to do a good formalization, you bound to have one that satisfy Godel's theorem requirement.
guimplen··on Why are mathematicians so bad at arithmetic? (2017)
>I'm not talking about Gödel or unprovable statements, because even if something is not provable it might be constructable. >Or proving the Collatz Conjecture. You need only basic algebra to build it, but something much more complex to prove it (if it is provable)

It seems like your first statement is about constructibility of the same object (that should be a proof). In your second statement you talk about constructibility of an object and provability of a certain statement about an object. I may be be judgemental, but being so imprecise is a big no-no in metamathematics.

guimplen··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
I'd appreciate if you point me to a study showing that vaccinated spread COVID at a lesser rate. As far as i know, currently the findings are inconclusive at best. Lower risk of serious infection and death is more or less established though.
guimplen··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
not only can, but there is evidence that current covid vaccines can only higher you chances of milder disease. The probability of you getting infection and being a spreader is the same whether you are or not vaccinated.
guimplen··on BitTorrent v2 (2020)
AFAIK, this is more of a belief than a fact. I would be very curious if you would show me a rigorous proof that e.g. SHA256 requires like on the order of 2^256 of operations to find a preimage of a random 256-bit string.
guimplen··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
Don't be so selfish. Insurance lawyer or manager cannot make his lambo buy itself.
guimplen··on Stanford requires booster shots for all students
I don't see much extremism. Most of the anti-coved-vax folks are ok with the tried and tested vaccines .For all I know the mRNA technology is new and the covid vax is the first of vaccines based on the said technology to get an approval - an emergency approval. This is a gamble. And I'm sure that nobody should be forced to gamble with their health, thats it. It might be redeemed a bit if the vaccine really stops the spread. but it seems to be not he case.
guimplen··on A stochastic method to generate the Sierpinski triangle
Like it. The theory of the iterated function systems beautifully utilizes the Banach fixed-point theorem.
guimplen··on A stochastic method to generate the Sierpinski triangle
I think your argument only shows that k-th point lies inside the k-th approximation of the Sierpinsky triangle, but says nothing abiut the fact that the final picture loooks like the Sierpisnsky triangle.
