guilamu··on Tell HN: Impact of using 1 or 2 sticks of DDR5 on a 6800HX with 680M IG
Well, the impact is far less noticeable on a configuration with a dedicated GPU.

The diffrence is surely not 65% and in fact barely visible: https://techguided.com/single-channel-vs-dual-channel-vs-qua...

What's interesting here imho, is the staggering difference it makes on an CPU integrated GPU (which makes sense since the GPU is using the comptuer RAM instead of its own RAM).

Also, we've been told DDR5 had built-in dual channel on a single stick so I was not sure this would make any difference at all.

guilamu··on Saving Energy: Home Server That Automatically Suspends to RAM and Wakes Up Again
You're right, using a desktop CPU for a mediacenter is not a good idea.

Laptop CPUs are, however, really well optimised for very low consumption when idling and that's what you should be using for a mediacenter.

Also, IMHO, ASRock Deskmini would not be a good idea for a media center since it's using desktop CPUs. The idle power draw will not be as good as mini pc with a laptop CPU.

guilamu··on Saving Energy: Home Server That Automatically Suspends to RAM and Wakes Up Again
Something's not right.

I own both a passively cooled 2016 Mini PC OLOEY Intel Core i7-7500U (as a home media center) and a 2023 Minisforum UM690 (for work and it's amazing btw), and they both use about 7 watts when idling (screen off).

How op is using 43 watts for an idling media center is just beyond me, he must be using a 1978 Intel 8086, right?

Anyhow, 4 watts is still far better than 7 watts and this is a great achievement, but those 43 watts are really sketchy imho.

guilamu··on RustDesk – Remote desktop software, written in Rust
I mean it's not even laggy, it takes me a full minute to display the remote desktop on a local gigabyte network.
guilamu··on RustDesk – Remote desktop software, written in Rust
It was extremely laggy and nearly impossible to connect so I installed the docker on a server and got exactly the same result.

No idea if I did something worng, but it's unusable for me in the current state.

Anyhow, I'm still very intrested in a working version of this.

Did you guys had better luck than me?

No problem here, latest ff, s10e.

guilamu··on Save web pages as PDF in Firefox for Android
I always used ff on android and never had any scrolling issue. I can't even understand how could that be. I'm using a Samsung s10e with a very bad exynos cpu.
guilamu··on Why fusion will never happen (2012)
I think we are not that far away from the "cheap super-battery": https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2022/10/catl-will-mass-produce... Does this qualify as "super-battery", you tell me, but it's pretty good and cheap and could easily scale for storage of solar and wind.
guilamu··on Waymo's collision avoidance testing
That was exactly my point, thanks for explaining it better than I did (as you must have guessed by now, English is not my native language, sorry).
guilamu··on Waymo's collision avoidance testing
"ot shown any meaningful progress in the past ~5 years nor any willingness to change from their “vision only, big data” strategy."

I guess they did now that they can make their own cheap lidars and adding them back in 2023.

guilamu··on Waymo's collision avoidance testing
Thanks for your anwser. I see a lot of bad things on Tesla FSD and I totally get the critics.

Yet, I follow DirtyTesla's YouTube channel and I think FSD is quite impressive compared to any other self driving software I've seen.

Would you mind to direct me to similar videos from Waymo for example in similar situations? I can't find anything even remotely as good as what Tesla is doing now.

I'm not a fanboy nor do I possess any TSLA actions (or even a car for that matter), I'm just interested in the field and until now I thought Tesla was the most promising tech (it seems I'm wrong, but I really like to see it!).

guilamu··on Waymo's collision avoidance testing
I did not spent a few years in self driving, but correct if I'm wrong, but how would Waymo win when they can work only with HD maps (aka, nearly nowhere) while Tesla FSD work nearly perfectly now even on dirt roads (aka anywhere) with no map at all?

Imho, Freetube is the best way to use YouTube.
guilamu··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
Then just leave for Telegram which is infinetly better (their native windows client is just incredible compared to the other atrocious electron based chat apps) or even better for Signal which is not as feature rich yet but open source.

guilamu··on Yahoo admits mangling e-mail (2002)
Thanks for your reply. I had no idea this was a thing. I still don't have any idea why would yahoo would put us on a grey listing while Gmail and Hotmail don't.

I'm trying to get their support to help me. I'll update here if I have any useful answer from them.

guilamu··on Yahoo admits mangling e-mail (2002)
Same here, most of mine are just delayed though.
guilamu··on Yahoo admits mangling e-mail (2002)
I'm managing an email serveur sending around 1 million emails a month.

Since a while now, yahoo are delaying emails for 12 h to 48 h. I have 0 issue anywhere else than yahoo.

Not a single email sent by this server has been flagged has spam according to their own support staff.

I have no idea what to do to fix those delays and it seems they have no idea either...

guilamu··on Netboot.xyz: your favorite operating systems in one place
I don't know how you managed not to be able to make it work. I've been using it on dozens of pcs, never had any issue.

And that's it is a bit harder to block ads in-app.
guilamu··on Ask HN: Why are there so few fanless laptops with Intel/AMD?
Web browsing, office apps, media consumption on the excellent (for the price) IPS panel.

Also to be noted : one of the lightest 14 inches on the market with an excellent battery life.

guilamu··on Ask HN: Why are there so few fanless laptops with Intel/AMD?
My answer: the mind-blowingly cheap, good and passive Acer Swift 1 with a quad-core last gen pentium n6000.

I've been buying dozens of those for people at work since 5 years now (first ones with n5000) and I still have to hear a single complaint about it.

The only point of failure of that thing is the charging port, proprietary, not usb c.

guilamu··on French lawmakers approve a ban on short domestic flights
In France, it mostly comes down to a price issue. On one hand, flights are massively subsidized and can be extremely cheap. On the other hand, train is not subsidized at all and can be pretty pricey.

Recently though, things are changing and making a Paris - Nice by train is becoming somewhat financially doable.
