guidoism··on Writing documentation for your house
This is exactly what I do. I call it my “Homeowner’s Operating Manual” and it’s based on the idea of an individual aircraft’s POH. It’s all there. Everything I’ve done to the house.
guidoism··on Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021)
I own several devices that won’t work with a C-to-C cable. Somehow something gets confused. You need to use a C-to-A cable and if you have a computer that only has C ports like me, then you need to use an A-to-C dongle. What a mess.
guidoism··on The US is quietly arming Taiwan to the teeth
I’ve been wondering the same but maybe we only have these examples because the only successful attempts to forcefully take power away from the capitalists has been by authoritarians.
guidoism··on Berkshire Hathaway posts a 40% jump in operating earnings, cash pile of $157B
That “idle capital” is pretty central to the Ben Graham way of doing things. You keep it around waiting for a great investment. Weird things happen like when silver crashed in price for a couple of days in 2020.
guidoism··on In Defense of RAM
The author has Chrome and Electron apps. Not sure this is normal usage. Grandma doesn’t use anything but what comes with the Mac.

It’s fascinating how we all try to extrapolate assuming our usage is the norm. I do the same. But we all have different expectations.

guidoism··on Cosmopolitan Third Edition
I can't use wget from homebrew anymore on my computer because of some weird shared library crap but I can download this universal binary and it just works. Whaaaaat!?!

So so so awesome.

guidoism··on Home schooling's rise from fringe to fastest-growing form of education
I wonder how the neglecters/abusers stay hidden. We are in a state that doesn’t even require notification. As far as the school district is concerned our kids don’t exist. But the medical system definitely knows them. I guess the neglecters/abusers don’t take their kids to their annual well-child visit? Maybe that’s the thing that should be made compulsory?
guidoism··on Software disenchantment
It does have a cost. But maybe the cost isn’t worth it sometimes. I’ll take the 4K screen please. I’m willing to pay for those pixels.

But animations for no reason other than to make it seem like waiting for something is less of a chore? Nope.

Unicode is something I’m willing to pay for.

But we should be able to draw the glyphs on the screen in single-digit ms like we did in 1981. Yes more pixels and more glyphs but it’s possible just not a priority.

guidoism··on So Long, Small Phones
Going to assume you mean foldable phones. A lot of people want small phones so they can be used one-handed. One cannot reach every part of a folding screen with one hand.
guidoism··on Cratering motor fuel sales in Norway show the death spiral that can end oil
The US’s cars also emit a huge percentage of the world’s greenhouse gases so solving that problem is kinda important.
guidoism··on Cratering motor fuel sales in Norway show the death spiral that can end oil
100% agree. But…. how do we get there? A LOT of people in the US living in very (gross) spread-out areas where there is horrible pedestrian infrastructure. The infrastructure that does exist seems like it was put in place to mock those without cars (sidewalks on extremely loud stroads). I currently live in such a place.

The end-point I want is for people to live in dense walkable areas by default. But people don’t live there and the few places that exist like that are disgustingly expensive because they are (surprise surprise) desirable patterns of building cities. So we need to build more of it. It will be a very big very energy intensive build-out program that will take decades. So the question is: Is it better or worse for the environment to move people to ICE so they can live in their existing buildings or is it better to build entirely new infrastructure so they can walk.

Maybe my thinking is too black and white. I want the latter but I’m not sure the costs to the environment in the short term are justified. Maybe the long term benefit justifies it. I don’t know.

guidoism··on Cratering motor fuel sales in Norway show the death spiral that can end oil
ICE are to EV as HDs are to SSDs. My intuition is that because there’s a floor to the cost of HDs (I think at some point it was around $35) and no practical floor to SSDs, there might be a similar story with cars. I know it’s really a bad analogy.

Cars still need brakes (for now) and tires and lots of other stuff, but there’s a huge amount of infrastructure built in a car to help it blow up million year old leaves. EVs are simpler so should be able to be made cheaper (eventually).

Maybe that means that what we expect from a car changes. If it costs you $10,000 to do all the stuff for a gasoline engine then a $1,000 AC isn’t a huge addition and there are maybe a bunch of other thousand dollar decisions that get added to make the cars cost what they cost.

Makes me think of stuff that used to be luxury items that came in expensive packaging and came with expensive accessories and now the actual item is so cheap the old packaging costs more than the actual item.

guidoism··on Trucking startup Convoy closes operations with no buyer
I honestly thought the original pitch had to do with self-driving trucks because in my mind how could it not.
guidoism··on Meta is banning people from advertising after running ads for Python and Pandas
People named Guido not being able to create an account because apparently my name is also a racial slur in some part of the world where I do not live.
guidoism··on Low serotonin levels might explain some Long Covid symptoms, study proposes
Totally don’t want to pick on you but this kind of thinking makes me really wish we could fork the universe right before giving the meds and compare the results of both universes. Ugh. Stupid physics.
guidoism··on Can we build trustable hardware? (2019)
I wonder if you only need to be able to verify a small portion. The stuff that deals with passwords and encryption and transferring money between bank accounts and sending and editing secure messages.

I’m not sure I care if the code that helps me view 3d graphics has been compromised or not.

guidoism··on Orthographic Depth
I’ve read phonetic English and it’s really hard at first but you eventually get the hang of it. Are you proposing that people just write out whatever they say in IPA and force the interpretation on the reader like we do with spoken language?

I wonder how this would affect communities that speak AAVE for example.

guidoism··on My personal C coding style as of late 2023
Wait, isn't long 32 bits, long long is 64 bits.
guidoism··on Impacts of lack of sleep
Reasonable assumption but in this case I was able to be flexible enough. The problem was my child not sleeping more than a couple hours at a time and our stupid adherence to the "baby should sleep in a different rule" in the US.
guidoism··on Impacts of lack of sleep
I’m fairly confident that the lack of sleep during my first child’s first two years permanently altered my brain in way that has seriously affected my ability to do my job. I think there is research to back my claim that sleep can change your brain just as trauma does.
guidoism··on My personal C coding style as of late 2023
I agree. A lot of languages have settled on those same names or something similar. We don’t live in a world with a single word size anymore so carrying bit length in the name is critical, and so is keeping identifier names short. His trade off is exactly the one I would make.
guidoism··on My elderly parents can't resist answering the phone
My elderly mother-in-law is pretty good about the scams but the part that I can’t understand is that she treats every land line phone call as the highest priority thing in the house. She will drop everything to answer the phone.
guidoism··on Car showed pop-up while driving
I've been hoping somebody would do that.

I have a only half-joking business idea to build high-quality physical controls for all of the crap touchscreen shit being forced upon us. High-end ovens for example rarely now include physical controls so (I'm looking at you Miele) so I would like an aftermarket thing that sticks on to the outside of it. Maybe even directly over the touch screen. Actually, hmm, that's a good idea. Maybe we need a device that is the size of various standard touch screens that can read the contents of the screen, interpret them, and then have some sort of way to do capacitance touch on the screen. All of this of course hidden from the user who just wants a damned analog knob.

guidoism··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
Delco! I now live in one of those small factory towns in Indiana. It’s fascinating to me how so many little towns in the Midwest existed just to make one small part for Detroit.
guidoism··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
Hmm, maybe…? I think there’s a difference in people who are thinking the power and abilities and differences come from the hardware and those who think it’s the software.

Now clearly the hardware is different too. But I think the whole “appliance” thing is software.

Maybe refining the argument to: It’s a Camry with the same horsepower as the truck?

Funny thing I was at the hardware store today looking at modern trucks and was laughing to myself that they seem so much more car-like than when Steve Jobs made that comment. They have pretty interiors with cup holders and infotainment centers. And cars these days have horsepower approaching trucks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

guidoism··on An abandoned cabinet full of Kodachrome slides in San Francisco
Kodachrome slides look unreal to modern eyes. My grandfather was a pretty decent amateur photographer so pretty much all of my mom’s childhood in the 1950s is captured in color. We scanned them in and my friends don’t believe that the color pictures on my screen are of my mom when she was 3 or my grandmother when she was in her 20s.
guidoism··on The Plumber Problem
It was Amazon and The NY Times for me. It was a long time ago so I don’t remember specifics but man, it really changed my perception of journalism.
guidoism··on Apple, Samsung, and Intel to Invest in Arm IPO
Why would they go public at this time? It seems like companies do this because they need a big infusion of cash. I’m curious as to what would be going on in the company to warrant this.
guidoism··on Math for kids outside of the Calculus Sequence
I don’t think you necessarily need to be in an “elite” school. My high school allowed us to take classes at the local university.
guidoism··on Ask HN: What is the most powerful, fully open, fully programmable computer?
My solution to that is to punt on the actual bit blitting pixel pushing stuff. :-) I still want my high dpi fonts and I’m willing to cheat a little to get them onto the monitor. And given that we are all probably using a modern monitor with multiple powerful processors on board I can pretend that the SBC I use as a video card is just part of the monitor.
