guessmyname··on Stanford scientists found a way to regrow cartilage and stop arthritis
At this point, simply flag this type of submission. It will always be “in mice”. It’ll take years before these headlines apply to humans, whatever the topic, 100 percent, always!

guessmyname··on Harvard particle physicist Matthew Schwartz drops 36 papers authored with Claude
“Drops” as in “Releases”, not “Retracts”.

I was confused too. Whoever wrote the title(s) doesn’t know a second language, otherwise, they would have realized how confusing that was, even to native English speakers.

guessmyname··on Show HN: Bodily Oddities
Same here. I also recall them when I had fevers in my childhood.

I attribute them to the fact that, while trying to sleep with a fever, my eyes are half-open, and any sharp object becomes a visible geometric shape that my brain attempts to comprehend but almost fails to. I still experience them in adulthood. I’ve never had sleep paralysis, but whenever I think of people who have it, I imagine it feels as debilitating as these half-sleep experiences where you’re unable to move while your brain processes distressing memories.

“Geometric Nightmares” is not a scientific name. It is simply the name given to this phenomenon in forums [1][2] where people discuss and share their experiences.

guessmyname··on A humble cabbage became one of the Forbidden City’s treasures (2025)
> The cabbage is often referred to as one of the institution’s “three treasures,” along with two other popular artifacts — namely the Meat-Shaped Stone, a piece of jasper carved to resemble braised pork belly, and the Mao Kung Ting, a traditional cooking vessel featuring the longest known inscription of ancient characters on any item of Chinese bronzeware. The trio are often collectively described as “pickled cabbage pork hotpot” by tour guides and as a marketing gimmick.

guessmyname··on Maximizing the value of your Claude Code sessions
> Opened issue for this and it was automatically closed: […]

Clarification: It wasn’t closed on submission though. It sat open ~17 days, a bot marked it stale, and it closed when nobody responded to the stale label.

The two-phase thing is the part I didn’t know until recently: the stale label is basically asking “is this still relevant?”, and answering it makes the bot back off next time around. nixpkgs does the same. Bumping feels wrong on most trackers, agreed, but at this issue volume I don’t know what else works.

Anyway a comment should reopen it. Your CLI vs desktop screenshots are a better repro than most things in that tracker.

guessmyname··on How AI text watermarking works
I almost never copy & paste AI-generated text, I almost always transcribe it by hand, which in turn forces me to read what the LLM generated and gives me the opportunity to replace words as I go. This obviously doesn’t scale, especially if your impact is measured by the number of software features you implement, but for more experienced engineers (Staff, Principal, and above) who are usually evaluated on the success of company-wide initiatives, I think this is the best course of action.
guessmyname··on GoAccess – Open-source real-time log analyzer and interactive viewer
GoAccess is an awesome tool! If I recall correctly, it was developed as an alternative (Go port) of a popular log analyzer called lnav (https://lnav.org), which is quite popular too: https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=lnav.org

guessmyname··on Discovery Loop
Only California employers with 15 or more employees have to post a pay range (Senate Bill 1162 [1], effective Jan 1, 2023) [2][3]. Discovery Loop employs only four people (that we know of), so it isn’t required to disclose a salary range in its job posts, of which there is only one [4].

guessmyname··on Security Incident INC-2026-07-28-01 – UK AI Security Institute [pdf]
> Why aren't these tests being run airgapped?! I just don't understand! […]

Because Anthropic does not want to give Project Glasswing’s partner airgapped access to the model(s).

Same problem with OpenAI Cyber program. They grant access but only through their (Internet facing) API.

guessmyname··on I don't recommend Tailwind CSS
The fact that “text-red-500 text-green-500” resolves by stylesheet source order rather than anything visible in the markup means the “locality of behavior” promise quietly breaks exactly when you compose components dynamically, which is why tailwind-merge exists at all, and needing a runtime dependency to answer “which of my two classes wins?” is a real design smell, not a bikeshed.
guessmyname··on Kenji/Serious Eats – 30-Min Pressure Cooker Pho Ga
I’m not entirely sure what makes this hacker news?

guessmyname··on RamenHaus
Düsseldorf, Germany, is home to Europe’s third-largest Japanese community [1] after London and Paris, featuring roughly 15,000 Japanese residents and hundreds of businesses.

Brazil has the largest ethnic Japanese population outside of Japan, with an estimated 2 million people of Japanese descent. Most of these individuals live in the state and city of São Paulo, which features the famous Japanese neighborhood of Liberdade [2][3].

guessmyname··on The AI Aesthetic

Speaking of this, GitHub replaced theirs with a pancake emoji.

Maybe related to the stacked pull-requests announcement earlier today.

guessmyname··on UK AISI / Caisi Preliminary Assessment of Kimi K3's Cyber Capabilities
NIST has named the top U.S. models in their (full) report: https://www.nist.gov/system/files/documents/2026/07/17/CAISI...

Spoiler: it’s OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 and Anthropic’s Mythos Preview [**].

[**] Reminder that Mythos Preview is a very different beast from Fable5, Mythos5, and Opus5. Unfortunately, anyone outside Project Glasswing will probably never get to test what this model can actually do, which is a shame, and it’s a big part of why the industry is so skeptical of the capabilities insiders keep claiming it has. I’d be skeptical too if I hadn’t tested it myself.

We lost access to Mythos Preview when Anthropic forced us onto Mythos 5 some weeks ago, which is garbage by comparison. I’ve already switched to GPT-5.5 and I’m working on adapting my harness(es) to less restrictive open-weight models. I don’t see any other way forward at this point.

guessmyname··on Show HN: Echo – Fable-level results at 1/3 the cost using open-weight models

The benchmarks are here → https://echo.tracerml.ai/eval/

They are not good benchmarks but at least they exist.

guessmyname··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Most people leave the “Co-authored-by: <name>” lines in their Git commits [1]. I’m not sure why exactly, but I suppose it's either laziness or a lack of care. Regardless, if I were Codeberg, that would be the first thing I’d detect, and then I might use a Random Forest Classifier to identify the rest.
