guepe··on Japanese companies fight for share of EUV chip technology sector
Two crowns are owned by the US: design and verification/design software and hardware tooling (my career is in verification). That's why China is non-export list for all of chip-design tooling and why China is now investing into their own tooling. It will take them time (maybe 2 decades ?) to catch up on tooling.
guepe··on Massachusetts voters pass right-to-repair expansion opening up car data
Tesla sells in Mass, despite the first "right to repair" bill. There is quite a bit of money in Boston area, I am pretty sure they will comply like they did for the first bill.
guepe··on Zoom Rolling Out End-to-End Encryption Offering
IMHO, the acquisition was mainly for two reasons: - signaling, to its customers and the market that they are taking this issue seriously - management "cover-my-ass": if somehow the overhaul is taking longer than expected, someone can claim "we tried everything we could"

There are secondary benefits, the acquisition did bring some probably-helpful talent around encryption/infosec, but as you said the rollout seems really fast vs acquisition time for a product that size.

guepe··on ‘Better Yield on 5nm Than 7nm’: TSMC Update on Defect Rates for N5
Yes I agree with your comments, I over simplified. However, regarding "most semi", it depends if we are talking about market value vs # chips. The CPU/GPU market is really much larger in $$$ than low-power embedded chips. Although it's changing again with AI inference...
guepe··on ‘Better Yield on 5nm Than 7nm’: TSMC Update on Defect Rates for N5
Chips are not designed to have fault tolerance. The typical solution on large chips today is to have large number of identical units, and use fuses to deactivate some when they are faulty. This is called binning and how all manufacturers build their line of products. Design and validation of fault-tolerant chips is MUCH more involved, which slows down next-gen products a lot. It's in general better to simply use today's process ASAP, with no or little fault tolerance.

The exception is wafer-scale chips, which are chips that span multiple "reticles", i.e. the size of the masks used to manufacture normal chips.

I have a Ph.D. thesis linked to building a wafer scale chip (ala cerebras, although 10 years ago). And cerebras AFAIK is the FIRST commercial product using wafer-scale approaches. Maybe we will see more products ? I have doubts...

Note also that defect density varies depending on location of the chip on the wafer. There are areas with more defects on average, so it's not as simple as 1 number.

guepe··on With oil cheap, Arab states cannot balance their books
Prices have dropped more frequently because of US shale oil. Electrification is a very small factor (yet).
guepe··on Build your next app with a graph database
I agree. I could not get to the point where author states the advantages of graph database. If author is preaching, then it's not convincing to the audience at stake...
guepe··on Ariane RISC-V CPU – An open source CPU capable of booting Linux
I know ZeBu very well and... "a bunch of FPGAs" is an understatement. It can go all the way to 1500 FPGAs !
guepe··on Tin Plasma Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation Makes 5nm Integrated Circuits Possible
I had a similar idea of using synchrotron to generate very low wavelength light for lithography... I guess costs are an issue!
guepe··on Astro's Elroy Personal EVTOL in Flight Testing
I don't think this could be a winning design: it's inefficient because it's really like a helicopter. IMHO, the ones with some sort of small wings and horizontal propellers have way more chance to succeed. Efficiency during horizontal travel is much better - and this is position where you spend most time - as well as increased max speed and lower noise during travel.
guepe··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2018)
Synopsys | Senior R&D Engineer | Marlboro, MA | ONSITE, www.synopsys.com

The ZeBu emulation team part of Verification Group is hiring a software engineer with a taste for complex challenges: scaling algorithms (we compile largest designs in the world), data-structures, heuristics, multi-threading. A bonus for some digital EE knowledge, but that's not a requirement (at all). Salary is one from a big EDA company (check Glassdoor), growth of the business unit opens up nice possibilities for personal career.

We are looking for someone with up to 5 years of experience.

Send your resume to elepercq@synopsys.com More info on ZeBu: https://www.synopsys.com/verification/emulation.html

guepe··on Deep Photo Style Transfer
Funny I saw a very similar attempt at Fitchburg Art Museum (MA) over the week-end. I seem to recall this was an MIT-project: is this related in some way ? It was coming with a rather complex (at least at first sight) interface allowing quite a bit of operations/transformations, which does not appear here, so this might be a separate attempt.

Looks like this thing is "in the air".

guepe··on Bored to Tears by a Do-Nothing Dream Job
How about _trying_ a remote job - being intimidated means you don't _think_ you are fit for such job, on the other hand it's your own perception. If you are depressed, believe me your perception is strongly biased negatively ;-)

I know nothing about you, but your comment hit me. For some reason I write this - I hope it won't hurt you in any way.

guepe··on Calipers: The Fastest Way to Measure Image Dimensions in Node
I see. So this is a "fast javascript implementation to retrieve size of {image, pdf}" And since process is a small task with many calls, it would be costly to call an external process (imagemagik) using native code.

guepe··on Calipers: The Fastest Way to Measure Image Dimensions in Node
Maybe I missed something on the methodology, but I have a question regarding justification of designing a complete new tool.

The article mentions "ImageMagick is slow because it does a lot more than just extract image size". So we implemented a complete new solution.

How about: "We added to ImageMagick a new command to just extract image size". So we published a small patch to Imagemagick, and got it done much faster than creating a complete new tool. On top of that, reusing tested Imagemagick data structure would probably reduce a lot maintenance cost.

Maybe I did not see some subtleties ?

guepe··on Neural Networks, Manifolds, and Topology (2014)
Thanks for the post, I found it very intuitive explanation of how neural networks work !
guepe··on Open-sourcing Facebook Infer: Identify bugs before you ship
The types of issues discovered (they mention null pointer access and resource and memory leaks) is much smaller than what a tool like Coverity will find (I use it). And they analyze C and Java, two languages supported by Coverity, a very mature tool...

I am not certain of the proposed value, except it's free to other than Facebook - but not to Facebook, who pays engineers to develop this... Is this some kind of NIH syndrom by Facebook, or is there something I missed ?

Synopsys - Marlboro MA (Boston area) - Full time | Intern - C++ routing tool - New graduate / Master degree

Not typical employer on HN, but since I am a long-time reader, I suppose some readers may be interested.

The ZeBu [1] backend team, working on compiler for the ZeBu emulator, is expanding fast. The routing team is looking for people excited by challenges: routing is NP-hard, and performance is king. Improving routing quality and compile time by proposing new ideas, implementing them, constitutes the bulk of the work.

We are looking for people with creativity, very strong in algorithms and data-structures, excellent communication skills (team is global). Previous knowledge of routing a bonus. Relocation required.

Email in my profile.
