guard0g··on Reinforcement Learning with Metacognitive Feedback
Didn't Bill Gates say AI metacognition is the key to superintelligence
guard0g··on Ask HN: How to learn math from zero for adults?
If I could relearn mathematics starting from elementary school, I'd get my hands on the AOPS books (Art of Problem Solving) and go through them on my own. They inspired my daughter sufficiently to pursue a math major in college.
guard0g··on Taiwan Military Issues Civil Defense Handbook [pdf]
Working on one and will post in the next day
guard0g··on UCLA Wants to Hire an Adjunct. But the Pay Is Zero
After all, they have to pay the administrator salaries somehow.
guard0g··on Ask HN: How can my 62 year old father get a job?
Instead of competing with the fresh grads, he should use his age to his advantage. Learn COBOL, and he'll be in-demand by US big banks/financial/insurance companies for the next 100 years.

guard0g··on UCLA hiring Asst. Adjunct Professor “on a without salary basis” (PhD required)
This is how American higher education gets hallowed out by opportunistic administrators that have carved out high-paying jobs in the non-profit sector.
guard0g··on Saudi Arabia Considers Accepting Yuan Instead of Dollars for Chinese Oil Sales
Likely, this allows both SA and China to reduce their dollar reserve assets, especially since the dollar has been weaponized against Russia and Afghanistan in recent days.
guard0g··on Ask HN: What to Do with an Old GPU?
Monitors: 1 - slack, teams, discord 2 - email, zoom 3 - markets monitor 4,5,6 - streaming news, tv 7, 8 - coding/work

I have the monitors mounted, stacked 2x2 on each side and tilted forming a semi-circle.

guard0g··on Ask HN: What to Do with an Old GPU?
Use it for a multi-monitor setup? I've got 8 monitors connected to my desktop thru two old GPUs.
guard0g··on The average age of a successful startup founder is 45 (2018)
A lot of truth in this: '...young founders are more financially constrained than more experienced ones, leading them to cede upside to investors at a lower price. In other words, younger entrepreneurs may be a better “deal” for investors than more experienced founders.'
guard0g··on Ask HN: What ML platform are you using?
Colab is a cheap (free) way to start, though you won't be training very large models for very long (which you shouldn't be doing if you are a beginner). You learn a different set of skills when you put together your own rig and install/maintain the libraries, which is something I recommend everyone to try just go gain an appreciation of devops skills. But that's not a necessary diversion for a beginner (and may needlessly increase the learning curve).
guard0g··on The Art of Monetary War
It's not entirely painless for the West, given Russia's key position as supplier of wheat, fertilizer, and natural gas. Inflation will be kicking around for a while (even without trillion dollar stimulus programs) and creating economic distress for most.
guard0g··on My Experience Working and Living in China
This 996 culture also exists in Taiwan (a democracy). Hard-work is a core part of Chinese Confucian philosophy (as is competitiveness). Many of my Chinese & Taiwanese coworkers have told me they emigrated overseas to US and EU just so they can work less (while still working more than everyone else in the company).

While slavery is forced labor, 996 is more about people trying to get ahead. During my wall street days, I elected to work 8 am - 2 am, 7 days a week for subpar pay, all because of future potential rewards. Many of my peers dropped out due to the pressure and didn't stick around for the big payoffs. If you interview them, no doubt they would consider themselves "slave labor."

guard0g··on American mask makers are going out of business
Bud, if you think only China is playing the subsidy game, you are sadly mistaken: https://www.forbes.com/sites/taxnotes/2020/11/20/boeings-tax...
guard0g··on The AI Research SuperCluster
Maybe great for research, but not very useful for application at inference time.
guard0g··on Today in the U.S. we are in the fourth superbubble of the last hundred years
TLDR, gravity is a conservative force, and we are at the momentarily weightless stage.
guard0g··on A neural network solves and generates mathematics problems by program synthesis
My daughter is going to love this...but I suspect MIT psets may evolve from solving the questions to devising automated methods (like this) to solve them
guard0g··on TSMC’s Arizona Culture Clash
Labor costs are probably the major reason why US chip firms went fabless in the past few decades. Chip production in the lower 48 makes rational sense for national security but not necessarily economic sense. The higher labor costs will be passed through to the supply chain ultimately to spendthrift consumers.

Note the comparison to Wall Street investment banking culture, where you work 14+ hrs a day 7 days a week (and you wanted to).

guard0g··on Code with Engineering Playbook
Thanks. This applies perfectly to the current organization I consult for with their newly spun up ML team.
guard0g··on Ask HN: How to handle being bad at school?
When I was young and desperate for $ to survive (I couldn't even afford a can of Pepsi), I found that I could force myself to learn something I had no interest in or hated but was useful to where I wanted to be. Perhaps you just need the right perspective (desperation works!)
guard0g··on Ask HN: What is your recommended path for getting into freelancing?
Get a full time job, make friends and treat everyone with respect, work hard and do a kickass job in something essential for the company (that other companies also need), then quit and offer to consult for them. They’re your first client, which builds credibility (and eliminates suspicion you left on less than optimal circumstances). Write a blog and/or volunteer in the local tech community, and you’ll be surprised how many referrals you can get. Also, other ex-employees of the company can be wonderful referrals. Good luck.
guard0g··on UC slams the door on standardized admissions tests, nixing any SAT alternative
Too much effort on racial equality in the admissions process, too little on ensuring success in college, graduation and beyond. My top 10 college was hyper focused on diversity admissions, but the graduation rate of the under represented population was under 50%. Students shifted down due one tier due have a much higher rate of success than students shifted up one tier.

If we want to be serious about equity and equal opportunity, we should focus on eliminating legacy.

guard0g··on Waymo will start testing self-driving cars in New York City
no need to tip the driver, yay!
guard0g··on The age of machine learning as code has arrived
This is the best quote I've seen in a while: "Do machine learning like the great engineer you are, not like the great machine learning expert you aren't."
guard0g··on Stanford Researchers Build $400 Self-Navigating Smart Cane
Wasn't there a similar project that came out several years ago based on ultrasonic range sensors? https://github.com/AssistiveLabs/SynthSense
guard0g··on US proof-of-vaccination cards are the wrong size to fit in wallets
But they fit perfectly into a conference name-tag badge holder!
guard0g··on Open-source Dropbox client, with multi-account, no-device-limit and M1 support
Nextcloud is an open-source Dropbox-like system with clients for multiple OS and decent security.
guard0g··on A “no math” (but seven-part) guide to modern quantum mechanics
I wonder if there is a guide specifically explaining the mathematics of quantum mechanics & M-theory, for us mathematicians with free time.
guard0g··on USC professor’s DIY online teaching hack to engage students goes viral (2020)
