gtm1260··on Nap Framework: Real-time control and visualization platform
Idk how I'm becoming the curmudgeon, but the contrast on this website makes it really hard to read.
gtm1260··on Show HN: Download videos, but only the parts you want
This would have been so useful when I was on a restricted internet connection a few years ago and trying to download some small archery clips for a compilation. No need to download a full 30 minute match!
gtm1260··on Storybook: UI component explorer for front end developers
Hard agree. The overhead of fixing all the issues with the Storybook versions of components made a lot of people just skip it all together.
gtm1260··on Show HN: Neural-hash-collider – Find target hash collisions for NeuralHash
My guess is that internally, they've realized they have a big CP problem on iCloud. That's a huge liability.
gtm1260··on Everything you need to know about Covid-19 vaccines
Does anyone know how the number of times you are exposed to the Covid 19 virus affects the efficacy statistics?
gtm1260··on Another 0-day looms for many Western Digital users
I think your over-estimating how little most people think/care about their storage drives.
gtm1260··on Linux on Chromebooks just might get me through a masters in computer science
All my main CS coursework was done while SSH'ed into a class cluster, but I took a bunch of electives where you're like working w/ docker, doing android development, etc. where its nice to have a fast machine.
gtm1260··on Thursday was fish day in the USSR
Ok but if you turn up at the meat shop and can't get any, wouldn't you then go to __x food shop down the street__ and get something else instead?
gtm1260··on Ask HN: What kind of chair are you using for WFH?
Used Herman Miller chair. Many furniture warehouses near cities have so many, many lightly used HM and Steelcase office chairs coming in from office closures and downsizing, and are selling them at bargain basement prices.

I know a few in the bay area feel free to DM for info.

gtm1260··on Show HN: A portfolio website simulating macOS's GUI using React
Awesome! You should see if you can get the dock magnification to feel more like the native dock. Would be a research project in and of itself, and the current version is still great.
gtm1260··on Ask HN: How many projects do you work on at a time?
To quote the great Hank Hill "Don't half ass two things. Whole ass one thing"
gtm1260··on How often do people copy and paste from Stack Overflow?
I agree, Django docs put Flask to shame! Flask in general is more intuitive I guess, but the docs are not as good as they could be.
gtm1260··on FicusJS
I was hoping for this to be a project that helps you draw ficuses on websites
gtm1260··on Only Google is really allowed to crawl the web
I'm not sure I agree with this. I think airline websites are so garbage filled that they've driven people to use the simple alternative of the google flights checkout.

It's a bit of a vicious cycle, but In general most websites are so chock filled with crap that not having to click into them for real is a relief!

gtm1260··on The world is facing a coffee deficit
Funny story my manager told me when I joined. "I tried to quit coffee one time. Didn't get anything done for an entire year"

LOL! anyways that just kind of made me think, like its not that bad for me, helps me get stuff done, and I love making and drinking it. No reason to stop now!

gtm1260··on Counting cycles and instructions on the Apple M1 processor
If you care about the keyboard longevity, I'd get the macbook air or wait for the new macbook refresh when they bring the air keyboard over to the pro.
gtm1260··on Git's list of banned C functions
Seeing valgrind come up with 0 leaks after like 10 hours straight on a lab was such a good feeling
gtm1260··on NASA's Perseverance rover sends stunning images
Stupid question maybe but like is there a reason the picture quality seems worse than a decent dslr photo? I'm so curious what that photo would look like, taken with an everyday camera, without the bizarre 'scientific' look of these shots.
gtm1260··on How to Read Assembly Language
Ahh I remember sweating bullets, trying to diffuse assembly bombs for labs in college. I love how looking at GDB starts out like literally staring at heiroglyphics but by the end of the semester, you get such an intuitive sense for things.

Haven't really 'used' that knowledge directly, and I don't think I will. But it taught me a ton about how computers work, which probably helps me somehow!

gtm1260··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
I'm so confused why he didn't just go Phillips Hue?
gtm1260··on AMD Zen 3 Ryzen Deep Dive Review
Probably the single biggest reason is the fact that they use TSMC to fab all their chips, and TSMC has had much more consistent node updates compared to intel.

Intel's next generation cpu node was supposed to come out this year, and it's been pushed back (possibly due to covid) until the end of 2021 or even into early 2022. Meanwhile, AMD says they have 5nm around the corner.

gtm1260··on Why do printers still suck?
If you read the article, the reason why he cannot print has nothing to do with the type of printer he has :) It's all to do with an idiotic "always connected to the internet" subscription plan.
gtm1260··on Show HN: A faster way to prototype your APIs using OpenAPI 3 and Swagger UI
Came here to say this, FastApi was my introduction to Swagger and now I love it!
gtm1260··on AMD Zen 3/Ryzen 5000 announcement [video]
I almost wonder if it's meant to keep demand a bit lower since the 3800x was almost impossible to get at launch. Given how the most recent set of more desirable launches went, I wouldn't be surprised to see this price come down in the future.
gtm1260··on RTX 3080: It Never Was in Stock
Sad that they would engineer that awesome cooler design and not let people buy it. The launch AIB's are just giant triple slot coolers slapped on.
gtm1260··on Autodesk Fusion 360 becomes almost useless for hobbyists
Fusion has one killer feature that Solidworks completley lacks (at least for me and my team). It works on Mac!
gtm1260··on Google taught me to turn Impostor Syndrome into an Advantage
Well, I would say that if you are an 'actual impostor', it would become much more clear very quickly and create an impasse. I think impostor syndrome is much more about the feeling that behind your back, people think you're dumb which is just a much more unlikely situation.
gtm1260··on Can't you just right click?
I kind of agree. I think the right click option is actually kind of genius since it gives people who somewhat know what they're doing a very easy to way to open unsigned software, while protecting people who don't know what's going on on their computers.
gtm1260··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
I was very skeptical of the camera covers, but then through conversations with some of my co-workers, I realized that they weren't being used because people were worried about spies secretly turning on the camera. It was 90% of the time just peace of mind that their camera was actually off, instead of having to find the sometimes hard to see options in video chat programs etc.
gtm1260··on Mini-LED, Micro-LED and OLED displays: present status and future perspectives
Very excited for the new display technologies on the horizon. Sure, current Tv's and Monitors are pretty good, but I can't wait to see the picture quality that we're going to get. Linus Tech Tips has a pretty easy to understand video (much higher level though) on this stuff. He goes into the manufacturer roadmap which I think is pretty good to know in terms of the time horizon for these technologies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTTiQeXXrhI
