gtani··on The Economics of Programming Languages [video]
I'm always rooting for projects like zig, odin, vale, nim, even jai. I think some killer apps are JS runtimes and defensive security, making eBPF more straightforward (and whatever tigerbeetle does... )
gtani··on Does Market Timing Work?
There's nuanced market timing, somebody reads WSJ and Barrons, watches Trade brigade and Tastylive analysts on YT and decides on overall cash/stock/bond %ages, that should have kept you out of bonds and out of the Bogleheads situation in the past year. Also last January you would have been looking at bitcoin, TSLA, NVDA and thinking these are going to have some kind of recovery, V shaped or long and grinding, but some kind...

Then there's the opposite question, how many active/day traders are consistently profitable, i think the answer is less than 5% of everyboedy that tries, the ideal is that somebody realizes they're not going to make it while replay/sim / paper trading, or people get stopped out quickly on substantial positions.

gtani··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
Mine works great as edoc reader but the pencil doesn't have full mouse functionality and the mechanical switch BT keyboard i need to do non trivial inputs adds a lot of bulk.. so still has a lot of potential.
gtani··on A half-hour to learn Rust (2020)
Helps a lot to track toolchain improvements:

- in distrib: cargo, analyzer, clippy

- others: Aquascope godbolt intellij flowistry

gtani··on Candle: Torch Replacement in Rust
I'd invite you to keep up on improvements in tooling like analyzer and auto-fixing clippy warnings (tho understanding internals of linters, borrow and type checkers is a full time job and then some)

gtani··on A new instrument found unusual success
Agreed, I have a few, a couple 8 strings with 2" fan are my sweet spot, tho I've never tried the Charlie Hunter designs w/wider fans (from Novax, Traugott, hybrid-guitars.com). Ideally i would get another custom with wider string spacing for 3 bass strings tuned in 4ths, but that's probably a pipe dream.

This tapping instrument seems very nice but certainly not bizarre, if you want bizarre, look under a d10 pedal steel. If i were to buy a tapping guitar, I would also look at Markus Reuters, touchguitars.com.

gtani··on What learning APL taught me about Python
Thanks ex-APL2 coder here, will look up For Layman site later. My favorite APL story was somebody from morning yoga practice who grew up close to Yorktown Heights, in high school, his parents got him a job writing code for Iverson, which he described as a lot of fun.

It could have been a good career choice at one point, given how many FTE's were devoted to the language at Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Lehman etc but I took the other fork

gtani··on AI researchers claim 93% accuracy in detecting keystrokes over Zoom audio
with hot swap keyboard, silent switches on vowels, R, T, most common letters and clacky switches elsewhere could (plausibly) defeat this profiling (or white noise generator)
gtani··on What my musical instruments have taught me
Very nice, I have a long history with piano, strings, woodwinds, percussion and digitals.

I would like to try the oud especially with the long picks that are sometimes used by mandolinists in Europe. Intonation is different on different fretless instruments, violin, cello, bass guitar, my fretless Strat vs say pedal steel.

gtani··on Public libraries are awesome and here are things you might not know about them
Good article, i'm very fond of the 3 library systems that i patronize (pac NW), they operate quite differently and have different collections.

My introduction to one was at a bluegrass festival where one library had a booth showing off Ableton and 3 tables of hard and soft synths, VST's, effect pedals. Incongruous and delightful at the same time.

gtani··on Jazz Comping (2021)
Thanks for that OS jazz link, will investigate. These days i play maybe a couple days a week, Oscar Peterson's Minuets and Etudes and a pile of guitar books by Mimi Fox, Doug Munro and others.

My top-down approach is to work books as best i can, i need to incorporate "bottom up" which is listen (50x if necessary) and transcribe.

(and i have another TODO for Barry Harris' books/vids etc)

gtani··on Show HN: An index of all monthly dividend stocks
I don't want to discourage you but fair to assume that your users will have access to tools at brokers (or reasonably priced 3rd party like tradingview) that can do dividend portfolio backtesting/construction, I would need to see total returns/sigma of same.
gtani··on Show HN: An index of all monthly dividend stocks
There's paywalled sites and then there's the tools you get at Schwab, e-trade, Fidelity, TDA, (maybe Vanguard, their apps investment is lagging), which have detailed info about std dev total returns, Sharpe/sortino ratios, correlations, tax consequnces on a large universe of assets

- quarterly pays,

- preferreds

- laddered investment grade bond portfolios,

- asset and mortgaged-backed

- high yield bonds,

- REITs, hot sectors are cell towers, datacenters, p ersonal storage units

- LP, MLP (especially energy pipelines) royalty trusts

(and that's just US domestic... )

gtani··on Sennheiser HD 555 to HD 595 Mod
I sympathize, i've had dozens of top ranked headphones as a head-fi fanatic and some of them were unpleasant, mostly for fit and weight reaasons.

On reddit, i've written some carefully researched little posts and gotten 1-2 downvotes so i'll downvote myself and see what happens.. sometimes it's a trickle of more downvotes, sometimes i get the upvotes i think it deserved.

gtani··on Apply with Me to YC W24 in the Next 100 Days and Build the OnlyFans of Trading
Interesting... full time trader here and consider myself expert on trading vids/books/educational materials. The good traders i know have 2 things in common, they lost a lot of capital starting out (even after doing lots of sim/paper acct/replay trading) but logged mistakes and avoided repeats and (2) they understood that this is similar to learning violin, tennis, Russian or C++ in 1 respect, you have to read a little and practice a lot, reading Galamian by itself won't give you good intonation or RH technique on violin.

I was thinking about this yesterday, whenever i need to learn specifics about futures, options or commons, I go to /r/futures /r/options etc and read a lot of threads but what do i do if they're not there? So i'll be watching this if it develops further. I do see problems getting "experts" to divulge broker statements or trading live.

gtani··on Lost John Coltrane recording, from experimental phase with Eric Dolphy, emerges
I hope you didn't give up, there's 2 ways to approach this, start with a book of arpeggios and construct some kind of sound, and transcribing and making it your own.
gtani··on Lost John Coltrane recording, from experimental phase with Eric Dolphy, emerges
Thanks, there's some serious music theorists in HN, below thread has the vibe of type theory and topology/abstract algebra threads, i pondered over "non-homeomorphic embedding of chromatic circle into torus" for awhile and forgot about it:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16570489

i do remember being disappointed that he didn't write about any response from Y. Lateef:

gtani··on Get started making music
and anybody that wants to go serious/pro, there's Snoman's Dance Music Manual, 4th edition but earlier editions shd still be useful.
gtani··on Get started making music
I remember getting lots of ableton tutorials after learning how to use garage band, logic and a little pro tools. I think learning other DAWs makes the Ableton/bitwig paradigm harder but I encourage everybody that's never played on a DAW to borrow a PC/mac with one and find your inner Iggy, Sheeran or Taylor Swift.
gtani··on Get started making music
There's probably rehearsal studios in the burbs with a minimal drum kit and minimal backline for $25/hour, in San Francisco i remember i being at least 3x that but really worth the money. Part of the experience is going into a dungeon like environment, inhaling huge amounts of smoke and wondering if you'll survive.
gtani··on Get started making music
this is a really great idea. I never played a kit until after 15 years of involuntary music lessons as a kid, including a stint in high school percussion section. Just having high hat, snare and kick is like magic.

At least i hope it's magic for somebody, playing clarinet or pedal steel for me is magic, whereas playing my best instruments, piano, guitar, flute, not really magic.

gtani··on Do watching skateboarding tricks frame by frame make you progress faster?
I believe with good brakes and good skills, an electric skateboard is probably safer than riding a bike if you keep lower speeds and learn how to roll instead of just flopping/falling on the ground but a passive skateboard with no brakes is clearly more accident prone.
gtani··on Do watching skateboarding tricks frame by frame make you progress faster?
Pretty novel approach, well documented

gtani··on Do watching skateboarding tricks frame by frame make you progress faster?
Interesting, my conclusion, it depends. That particular one has back foot just barely in the frame at critical moment.

Watching Troy Grady's closeups of leading guitar players picking hands from a few inches away didn't do much for me, but watching lots of telemark skiers vids helped pinpoint variables like pole length and pole plant reach that I would not have thought of.

So, like learning piano or violin or sports/kinematic skills, read and watch vids a little and practice a lot.

gtani··on Do watching skateboarding tricks frame by frame make you progress faster?
well, I have to admit seeing decent numbers of fractured collarbones and wrists, and the occasional serious trauma among people learning, so first get best helmet you can find and protective gear.

You could try a hub driven electric board, supposedly they can be freewheeled without the motor like a heavy passive skateboard to increase your practice time, which musicians and gamers call shed time or seat time
