gsivil··on MIT Researchers Produce Micro-Light that Outputs More Power Than Applied
I am sorry that I cannot elaborate more on that for now(4am) but the cooling effects of light are known for quite some time already. Please check laser cooling as a keyphrase.
gsivil··on Rms has his bag stolen in Argentina
I am not so sure that rms cannot afford a laptop. He is in need of more free models to choose from than a few bucks
gsivil··on Show HN: Script Excel with Python
This can be a deal breaker for long long time
gsivil··on Samsung invests $500K in Linux Foundation to battle iOS
If you take into account the overheads ;)
gsivil··on Open Garden: Share bandwidth; reduce network congestion—if carriers don't revolt
I would wholeheartedly make 10-20% of my bandwidth available if there was a safe and organized way
gsivil··on Mathics - A free, light-weight alternative to Mathematica with support for Sage
Sad that once more the most upvoted comment is negative. Congratulations for attacking a problem like this one.
gsivil··on Elon Musk's determination
Maybe for the YCS01 batch
gsivil··on I'm leaving the Internet for a year
I will be running the marathon under three hours. Top comment: It has been done before
gsivil··on IBM 1959 Job Post
Among the other achievements of IBM I would like to mention the 4 Nobel prizes(3 in Physics):

http://www.research.ibm.com/resources/awards.shtml

gsivil··on Dropbox adds drag and drop
And it is also now that you can get in retrospect the referral bonuses.
gsivil··on Google maps 8bit quest mode. A setup for 4/1 perhaps?
If it is possible post links to images not to google map links because they do not work for everyone
gsivil··on Can guys in coffeeshops compete with celebrity entrepreneurs?
For every one hundred comments that say that ideas do not matter I will have to add one comments that say:

IDEAS is what matter. Please do not confuse idea with a confused unclear statement with no connection with the specific implementation. Ideas is the specific intellectual way to move forwards and towards your goals.

gsivil··on Why French Parents Are Superior
It is not the theme that gratify one's intellectual curiosity but how he treats it instead.
gsivil··on Why should piracy be encouraged, a third world perspective
The average DVD costs around 10-15 dollars.
gsivil··on Show HN: TrollBlock, It's Okay to Dislike
The way your HN title is written it makes your project look like a fb plug in or somthing. You may be more direct in what is your interesting project about.
gsivil··on Fun with math: Dividing one by 998001 yields a surprising result
Try taking the square root of it
gsivil··on What is the coolest thing you can do in ten lines of code?
This is not cool in my book.
gsivil··on Why (and how) we've switched away from Google Maps
Can somebody please give the rationale behind banning the brain teasers?
gsivil··on Ask HN: Does this kind of arrogance get job applications?
Hacking challenge: can somebody use google correlate and find the company unambiguously?
gsivil··on Want Me To Read Your Blog? Do This
The font choice makes the blog such a pain to read.
gsivil··on Apple's suggestions to Samsung to work-around its iPhone and iPad design patents
Is this sarcastic?
gsivil··on Tell HN: I want to teach you web development. In 8 weeks. For free (sort of)
What are all these green accounts that seem to be so excited about the "Code Academy"? This is getting suspicious
gsivil··on Ask HN: What would you do if you own a large ISP
Ι just add my comment here with the hope that your question gets with some luck to the front page.

It is a very interesting question but it is really so uncommon that somebody (even)here owns an ISP company that people may think that you could be just asking that for fun.

Good luck

gsivil··on Real-time Chess (not turn by turn): Ninja Chess
I see only a latency graph but the board is "broken" and when I log in there is not checkerboard just a gray frame. That's on safari
gsivil··on Avoid using the term "Cloud Computing" except when being ironic
because by the "inter" you refer to connections and by the "-net" you imply almost clearly a structured environment.

What does cloud mean, besides something structure-less "out there"?

gsivil··on Apple: Siri Only Works On iPhone 4S, We Have No Plans To Support Older Devices
Humans tend to have opinions even for things that they do not buy. And their opinions can be of more interest/use when they have to do with massively popular products.
gsivil··on Ask HN: Siri to become search engine to compete directly with Google Search?
There is already a discussion that you maybe interested to follow-you can find it in the front page:

gsivil··on Apple's Siri seen cutting Google out of valuable mobile ad views
Bretthellman, the badge that shows up when I visit the page is extremely annoying and indicates an impatience unnecessary and maybe even dangerous for the viability of your site. I would suggest let the visitors see at least a poll undisturbed and then decide by themselves if they want to give you their ID.
gsivil··on Git for Computer Scientists
It was posted and discussed yesterday too:

gsivil··on Dennis Ritchie, High School Guidance Counselor
Another data point of an accomplished man being down to earth. I almost find this just a step beyond the call of duty.

Scenario: Imagine that you are looking for a job to the next hot small start-up. Send an email pretending that you are a high school student looking for a word of guidance. See if they will have the time to respond the same way dmr did. Judge
