What is it all about?
submissionscomments
gsivil··on Richard Feynman on disrespecting authority
almost every HNer has submitted this at least once- including myself! Well done
gsivil··on Silicon Valley start-up looking to mine the moon
It is the anti-pioneering spirit in me telling me that this is rubbish?
gsivil··on The 50 most innovative companies 2011 according to Technology Review
Also http://www.technologyreview.com/tr50/
gsivil··on SICP in ePub format on Github
Slightly off topic but I do not want to post another Ask HN question: what implementation of Scheme would you guys recommend/use? Working smoothly would emacs would be appreciated
gsivil··on 30 Years of Operating Systems in the Movies
This is a great collections of computer interfaces. Thanks
gsivil··on Gleick's new book on information theory
Also the author of "Chaos: Making a New Science"
gsivil··on Sell your used textbooks for beer
I always found it sad: people waiting in lines to sell their text-books! Textbooks to beer converter sets a new low: it is pathetic
gsivil··on Best-ever quantum measurement breaks Heisenberg limit
The peer review process is broken. This is sad from the perspective that it is not easy to trust anything anymore. But at the same time fortunate because everyone in science has to prepare herself for judging independently the articles that are served by the journals
gsivil··on The Anatomy of a Y Combinator Demo Day Pitch
Are the YC pitches so similar to each other as the article implies?
gsivil··on Was Einstein really a poor student?
I fact he was the sole-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1921
gsivil··on Man Who Set Stage for a Nobel Now Lives a Life Outside Science
See also the article The Fall and Rise of Douglas Prasher in Discover Magazine from April 2011 (This how I found the link)
gsivil··on The pi is a lie… Happy Half Tau Day!
Maybe we should wait for June the 28th for that discussion. Just to show some respect for pi that was with for quite some time
gsivil··on Ask HN: Someone just stole my iOS app's name... What should I do?
The word "stolen" is misleading- if I read you well. I would suggest you to rephrase your post if you want to be taken seriously
gsivil··on [dead]
Even though I could agree with you, I think that some things should not be put in front of many eyes.
gsivil··on The Day Facebook Lost Half Its Value
I guess the downvotes came because you focused on the real product instead of focusing on Calacanis or TC.

When HNers started downvoting thought that are at least fair and for sure politely expressed?

gsivil··on CLiki: The Common Lisp Wiki
Making some enemies: Google "common lisp" and you will find that link in the first page of results. In a general programming languages forum this could be maybe ok. But having this in the first page of HN (known for having some familiarity with CL) strikes as something superficial to me.
gsivil··on Why does Adobe Reader need so many updates?
The fact that millions of people are using their software and the fact that they have a real problem to solve (to silence the haters) does not sound so depressing to me. On the contrary many developers would be happy to have such a problem
gsivil··on Google May Kill Chrome URL Bar
Thanks! Sorry for rediscovering the wheel :)
gsivil··on Google May Kill Chrome URL Bar
Along the same lines I was thinking of the following alternative:

having no url bar at all but if you press let's say Ctrl+g (put whatever is available here) the url bar appears in the center of the screen and it disappears when you press Enter. Do you think that something like that could make sense?

gsivil··on Quora vs. StackExchange: Why, Joel, Why?
The issue of "reputation" is really interesting and my guess is that will be more and more important in the future. It is already important in specialized communities where it makes sense to be an expert or a master or a ninja or you name it or gain karma points.

But I am not sure how important can it be in communities with many many users and without a well defined focus. He refers to a few metrics for the social component but it is not clear yet what a good and appealing "reputation metric" could be.

gsivil··on Ask HN: How to draw a single pixel?
I am running Linux (ubuntu 10.10) and I am using the Gnome terminal. Of course I could switch to something else if this could make things easier.
gsivil··on I finally understand why I'm not allowed to use Lisp
I find nothing interesting in the original post to be honest. Just somebody that has a superficial impression about C# is complaining. Even the first 25 comments that I read are of no particular interest.

Meta: I wildly guess the HN post gets all the upvotes because initally people think that it will be about a google employee not allowed to use Lisp in google.

gsivil··on 12 new file formats in the Google Docs Viewer
I have just tried to open a word file and it was impossible since Google Docs support Word files only up to 1MB! This is a big limitation in case that somebody would like to co-edit scientific articles.
gsivil··on Cancer has returned? Steve Jobs may have just six weeks to live
I find it kind of sad posting rumors and gossip about somebody's health on HN even if he is Steve Jobs that definitely has huge impact on technology.
gsivil··on Aquatic carnivorous plants with ultra-fast traps studied
The relevant video about the ultra-fast trap of that aquatic carnivorous plant:

gsivil··on IBM's Watson Dominates Humanity's Best in Jeopardy
Humanity's best is by no means present in that contest. These Jeopardy champions do not represent the world not even all Americans. In most cases people that compete in these games are not by any definition the brightest. I really like the idea of the Machine versus Humans contest, but having some already retired champions of a game competing with a tireless computer and supposedly representing humanity at its best it is at best unfair.
gsivil··on Nobody really gives a damn what you built your site in (why I chose asp.net).
I completely agree with you. I think that in the 99.99% of the cases the question of scalability is related with a pseudo-problem or at best a good problem to have.
gsivil··on Nobody really gives a damn what you built your site in (why I chose asp.net).
Thanks!

I think I understand why the initial design/technology decisions would rarely make it to a product that has to be largely scaled. This makes perfect sense for almost all cases.

Do you think that there are technologies that are inherently more scalable than others, so if some body was initially choosing them would stand more chances to scale up in a non painful manner?

gsivil··on Nobody really gives a damn what you built your site in (why I chose asp.net).
<no-sarcasm>Can you please explain that?</no-sarcasm>
gsivil··on Guy commits his genome to Github, smartass forks and issues a pull request
Sometimes I do not understand HN. There is the original post of the guy that posted his DNA on github.com (with the link of course) and a decent discussion on

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2211334

and still this post is the most upvoted
