gshdg··on Ask HN: What do you use Google Sheets for?
I’ve got three files open right now. One is calculating contract rates based on hourly, weekly, and monthly contracts and various discounts. One is a list of RFPs, contacts for them, and their status. One is costing out a few options for a home office setup.

So a combination of lists and light calculations.

In the past I’ve also used them as awkward makeshift databases and leaned heavily on conditional formatting to highlight data points that required action.

gshdg··on Ask HN: Web development with just a laptop? (no external monitors)
Multiple virtual desktops
gshdg··on New York Times phasing out all 3rd-party advertising data
Actually, Moore's law says nothing about speed, just the number of transistors you can stuff into the thing. Plus progress has been leveling off.
gshdg··on Ask HN: Do kids drag your career down?
If you’re a woman, almost certainly. If you’re a man and don’t have a homemaker as a spouse, probably. If you’re a man and have a homemaker as a spouse, then only as much as you choose.
gshdg··on Show HN: Hacker Spring – Instant blog by email, no signup required
Heh. I’m just curious, and the answer might affect my decision whether to use something like this, but you have a point.
gshdg··on Show HN: Hacker Spring – Instant blog by email, no signup required
What checks?
gshdg··on Downtown is for People (Fortune Classic, 1958)
Fwiw, this is by Jane Jacobs, author of the classic “Death and Life of American Cities”. She was decades ahead of her time in thinking about how to make cities livable and appealing.
gshdg··on Show HN: Hacker Spring – Instant blog by email, no signup required
I assume each blog is distinct FIOS he’s by the sender’s email address?

What happens if someone sends an email spoofing your FROM address?

gshdg··on Ask HN: What is the point of “© 2020 CompanyName” in website footers?
Plagiarism and copyright violation are not the same thing.

Plagiarism is an ethical offense but not a legal one and isn’t limited to direct reuse. It includes using ideas (even in your own words or representation) without attributing them.

Copyright violation is a legal offense and applies to direct reuse (including various forms of “remixing”).

(IANAL, this is not legal advice.)

gshdg··on Amazon is handing out 'Thank you' t-shirts to warehouse workers as it cuts pay
So then why do you buy from amazon instead of elsewhere?
gshdg··on Even Better Motherfucking Website
Nope. The serif fonts of the earlier versions are easier to read on a high DPI screen; and the extra margins on this one make it far too narrow to read comfortably on a phone.
gshdg··on Ask HN: What is the point of “© 2020 CompanyName” in website footers?
You could. But there are enough people out there who are ignorant about copyright that you’re less likely to end up with violations if you include it.
gshdg··on Ask HN: How do you “pre-code”?
I find it useful to write out a workflow of things the code will need to do from a high level.

Ex: “Validate form input” or “filter API response based on submitted criteria”

Those become doc blocks for functions and classes.

Then I break those down into more granular directives still more abstract than pseudo code.

Ex: “determine whether name input is alphabetical” or “iterate response. check contents of all 3 phone fields against submitted value”

Writing both code and tests against that then becomes nearly trivial.

gshdg··on Boeing CEO warns of possible industry bankruptcy
The GP’s point is that the system that incentivizes this is flawed and needs to change. Do you disagree?
gshdg··on Ask HN: How do you prepare for a new job?
Most of this advice is exactly what I’d give.

I wouldn’t go as far as jacket and tie on day one, but definitely arrive dressed a full level more formally than you will most days. Button down and chinos rather than t-shirt and jeans. Blazer rather than polo shirt. Etc.

gshdg··on Not quite a car, not quite a motorcycle: a vehicle built for one
This is awesome. But nobody’s going to buy it if they have to drive it sharing the road with hulking SUVs. It’s nearly as dangerous as a motorcycle simply because it is so small and light. The only advantage is protection from the weather.
gshdg··on Ask HN: What to $600 AWS credit only valid for 7 Days?
Sell it to someone for $500
gshdg··on Ask HN: What do you miss most from pre-quarantine life?
Being able to hug my mom.
gshdg··on Population-level herd immunity against Covid-19 will not be achieved in 2020
It might not be. But we can’t count on that either, given that shorter timeframes are common for many coronaviruses. It would be very foolish to act yet on an assumption that immunity lasts years.
gshdg··on Population-level herd immunity against Covid-19 will not be achieved in 2020
We still don’t even know whether immunity to this lasts more than a few months (as is common with other coronaviruses). So it’s premature to talk about herd immunity regardless.
gshdg··on Ask HN: I've saved up $80k USD. What should I do with it?
Dollar cost averaging into an index fund.

After paying down any high interest debts and earmarking at least 3 months worth of living expenses into a savings account or other cash equivalent as an emergency fund.

There’s a great decision making flowchart floating around somewhere or other.

gshdg··on Coronavirus Causes Damaging Blood Clots from Brain to Toes
There seems to be a through-line that the whole thing is related to clotting and coagulation. That basically it's not destroying lung tissue so much as preventing the blood from properly absorbing oxygen from the lungs.
gshdg··on Coronavirus Causes Damaging Blood Clots from Brain to Toes
Based off a fantastic Crichton book, fwiw.
gshdg··on What You'll Need to Know in 2020 That You Don't Know Now (2000)
The technical predictions are hit and miss (as such things tend to be), but this bit is prescient:

> On the one hand, your workload will multiply as you bat away each glitch resulting from the increased number of gadgets in your life. On the other, you will be forced to take on moral questions no human has ever faced. When will you find time to do that? How will you contemplate when everything is speeding up and time for reflection is practically nonexistent?

gshdg··on Ask HN: What's that one thing you would do, if you got to rewind your career?
Make time to speak more with my manager about the role I wanted that didn’t seem to be available, rather than accepting that role at a less stable company and then getting laid off from it due to cash flow problems a month after my former manager had hired someone else into the role I’d wanted.
gshdg··on Ask HN: Platform to crowdsource writing a novel or short story
Sounds like you’re looking for a wiki?
gshdg··on A man feeding a remote Alaska town with a Costco card and a ship
In densely populated areas like much of Europe, a half hour drive is considered a pretty meaningful distance. Plus a lot fewer people have cars than in the US.
gshdg··on The Covid-19 Riddle: Why Does the Virus Wallop Some Places and Spare Others?
A lot of these differences are simply due to underreporting because people aren’t being tested. We really need to be looking not at confirmed case rates but at rates of death above the average for the time of year.
gshdg··on The Inevitable Coronavirus Censorship Crisis
Perhaps by putting our concern into preventing the lines from blurring more than into worrying about private platform censorship in and of itself?
gshdg··on After One Tweet, This Man Got $69M from New York for Ventilators
You mean this?

https://www.newsweek.com/elon-musk-tesla-ventilators-coronav...

> But as noted by NPR, The American Society of Anesthesiologists warned in guidance published on February 23 that BiPAP machines may actually "increase the risk of infectious transmission." Experts have said the non-invasive devices can let air escape, resulting in potential virus spread.
