I'm a technical project manager with 7+ years of professional experience. I focus primarily on web and iOS development projects, but I can quickly grasp new technologies or languages and use them to come up with creative solutions to business problems. Although I excel at managing technical projects, I love to code and build things whenever I can.

gs7··on Poll: What is your #1 productivity killer?
People having conversations around me are my biggest productivity killer. Sadly I'm in a small open office environment where it is culturally acceptable to have personal conversations with your coworkers at any time of the day, as if we were in a break room. Our manager is one of the worst offenders. None of my colleagues are developers so they're not really bothered by it as much, but I have a very hard time being productive and writing good code when I can't hear my own thoughts. It's very frustrating.

I'm a web developer with 7+ years of professional experience. I love to be challenged with a problem and be given the opportunity to design and build the solution. While my main expertise is in front and backend web development, I've also been building iOS apps for the last 9 months. I'm good at quickly grasping new technologies or languages and using them to come up with creative solutions to business problems. I'm currently employed, but I'm open to new opportunities, networking, or fun side projects.

gs7··on Thank HN: You guys helped me land my dream job.
I agree that the Who Wants To Be Hired thread is valuable and helpful. I was a bit late to the party, but I still had 4 companies and 2 recruiters contact me, one of which turned into an on-site interview at a YC company. I would definitely love to see this thread continue to be posted every month.

I'm a web developer with 7+ years of professional experience. I love fixing problems or solving inefficiencies with the help of technology. While my main expertise is in web development, I've also been learning Objective C and building iOS apps for the last 6 months. I can quickly grasp new technologies/languages and use them to come up with solutions to business problems. I'm currently employed, but I'm open to networking, new opportunities, or fun side projects.

gs7··on Show HN: Clean & Simple Shopping List (my first iPhone app)
Fair enough. The badge does go away though when your list has either no items or all items are crossed off. But I could make it an optional setting in the next update. Thanks for the feedback!

I started with the Big Nerd Ranch Objective C book (http://www.amazon.com/dp/032194206X), then my job paid for a week-long class put on by Big Nerd Ranch. I can highly recommend both. I learned a ton and watching the Stanford iTunes U course on iOS development makes a lot more sense now.

gs7··on Ask HN: Resources to Learn AWS?
I attended an AWS conference in SF this year and saved all of the tutorials to my dropbox. I think this is what you're looking for: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gyv5e3q6av9iqc8/lZ3_usn1s7

This is what I'm wondering as well. My wife's account was a part of this hack yesterday, though oddly she never uses the web interface. Maybe she was logged in regardless. She changed her password afterwards, but maybe the solution is to just log out of your account to kill that auth session cookie?

Sam, what's the plan if you can't find a buyer for the amount you're looking for?
gs7··on Watch YC Startup School 2012 Live
His slides were marked with "confidential, do not distribute". That may have something to do with it. It's unfortunate, his talk was excellent, though he didn't divulge any secrets as far as I could tell.
gs7··on Ask HN: Are we giving away too much equity?
Thank you for your insights, that is indeed helpful.
gs7··on Ask HN: Are we giving away too much equity?
I'm less worried about the valuation, but rather about the percentage my co-founder and I would own. I think we could get by with 70k, even if we had to give the angels 35% for it, but my co-founder likes that extra 30k just to make sure we have enough for a while.

You're right, we could renegotiate and risk losing the entire investment. I'm torn whether it's worth that risk. However, we would not get a salary from this investment. Our risk is the opportunity cost we invest through our time building the company, while the angels risk their investment.

gs7··on Ask HN: Are we giving away too much equity?
Thanks for your input. To answer your questions:

1. The money we've made so far is through affiliate links, because at this point we offer our product for free. We'll have a freemium service later on once we develop our premium features. The money we've made in one month so far is quite negligible, but it shows that we have potential to make a lot more once we get more customers.

2. Our product is not B2B. We're focusing on users in the higher education market.

3. Our product is not unique, but we've executed very well and offer a much better user experience than our big competitors. We are also trying to appeal to a different demographic than our competitors.

4. Unfortunately, yes. The money we've made so far is too low to pay for anything and it really just showed us that we CAN make money from this. We need the investment mostly to spend on marketing and scalability, and my co-founder would have rather not taken out a second mortgage.

gs7··on Ask HN: How many people needed for effective A/B testing?
Thanks for the link and the correct terminology (I updated my post).
gs7··on Ask HN: How Do You Consume Hacker News?
I use a Greasemonkey script called Hacker News OnePage [1] that I customized to fit my needs. It puts HN in a sidebar and opens links in a frame to the right of it. Comments are also shown underneath that frame. It's very similar to HN Vue [2], but I have more control over the layout and can customize exactly how I want to consume HN.

gs7··on Ask HN: Books on overcoming shyness
By labeling his book outdated I actually meant the examples and situations he describes. The lessons learned and advice he gives are definitely timeless.

After reading everyone's suggestions here I realized that I'm not as socially inept as I thought. I do have the fundamentals down. I guess it's the lack of practice and not knowing how to keep a conversation going when you're not naturally interested in the other person that I'm having a difficult time with.

But I appreciate your suggestion on how to approach people at the Hackers & Founders meeting. I think this is what I need, tips on how to initiate a conversation while sounding natural. And LOTS of practice. Thanks!

gs7··on Ask HN: Books on overcoming shyness
I guess by "taste of alcohol" I mean the taste of beer, wine, champagne, tequila, vodka, and anything else non-mixed I can't think of right now. I pretty much tried them all in my pursuit to find something I can drink without feeling tortured. In this quest I found that I was ok with cocktails (Long Island Ice Tea was my drink of choice for a while), but those you can only get when you're out at a bar. What about parties where the drinks come straight out of bottles from the grocery store? This is where I discovered Smirnoff Ice, which to me just doesn't have that gross alcohol taste. But of course because of that it's not generally considered a "manly" drink, so my peers always pressured me to drink "non-girly" drinks instead by making fun of me. After a while I just got sick of it and decided not to drink at all anymore, because it just wasn't worth the constant teasing.
gs7··on Ask HN: Books on overcoming shyness
Thanks Matt! I did find the Shyness Clinic as well before I posted here, but the frugal person in me thought that maybe I can get over this without spending a ton of money. But in the end if nothing else helps I'll definitely consider it.

As to answer your questions, I moved here because my wife got a job and we've been wanting to move away from LA for a while. I've been really interested in how to run a startup recently and I'm currently trying my hands on one as well. So I'm looking to meet people who are technical and entrepreneurial, as that's how I would describe myself.

gs7··on Ask HN: Books on overcoming shyness
Thank you for the encouraging words and tips. I'll track down Jonathan on Thursday and see what happens.
