grumpydba··on The Greening of Paris Makes Its Mayor More Than a Few Enemies
> And it's OK that this move is making the Mayor more than a few enemies.

This is basically a PR piece. The mayor has enemies because of the attrocities she inflict on parisian citizens ie: http://belairsud.blogspirit.com/archive/2016/04/03/du-style-...

All of this while tripling the deficit and turning some districts into crackheads theme parks (you can google "la colline du crack").

Several other miscelanous issues:

- rat problem

- bad planing in street renovation projects causing huge jams (and thus polution spikes...)

So she now plays the victim cards saying her vocal opponnents are nasty car addicts. And some people believe it.

grumpydba··on Processing 40TB of code from 10M projects with a dedicated server and Go
> Are we trying to create job security through unnecessary complexity?

As a python/go dev, I can assure you that go is not much more complex. And as a server admin, it's much easier to deploy.

It does have drawbacks when compared to python, but it can often be the optimal solution.

grumpydba··on The Awkward but Essential Art of Office Chitchat
In some big corps, in order to be a maker you have to know people in different departments to speed up things and take some shortcuts. You can also slowly have your technical solutions adopted.

It takes coffee breaks and some jokes to reach that. And I think it really boosts your productivity.

grumpydba··on Ask HN: PostgreSQL or MySQL?
Well technically wiredtiger is not in charge of the replication.
grumpydba··on Ask HN: PostgreSQL or MySQL?
Mongodb's new storage engine was written by Keith Bostic and Dr Michael Cahill.

They are database veterans. Wiredtiger is really nicely written.

grumpydba··on A high-speed network driver written in C, Rust, Go, C#, Java
Playing games with the commonly accepted meaning of words is a known sophism.

The Linux kernel is 0.2% of shell scripts, yet no one would say it's written in shell. Same for windows or sql server. .Net is marginal there.

Btw I do code in Go, but I mostly use go apps and enjoys their small memory footprint and ease of deployment.

I must not be the only one as I see go apps pretty much everywhere in ops teams.

grumpydba··on Building a Better Go Linker
I see lots of false assertions here. Here's a significant one:

> There are so many optimizations that will likely never be added to gc, like a register-based calling convention.

The calling conventions was marked as undefined as a first step to changing it [1]. The change was introduced by the very author of this post.

Also, a more agressive inlining mitigates the slow calling conventions.

More generally, I think it is a huge achievement for a PL to be self hosting. It makes its development easier as there is only one language to deeply know (plus assembly of course).

grumpydba··on A high-speed network driver written in C, Rust, Go, C#, Java
I think saying 'written in X' != 'has API wrappers for X' .
grumpydba··on A high-speed network driver written in C, Rust, Go, C#, Java
Are you working in operations and infrastructure? My take is that writing enterprisey applications you are not exposed to those tools. I'm in ops.
grumpydba··on A high-speed network driver written in C, Rust, Go, C#, Java
Exact. It's marginal. Saying "written in .net" about sql server made the Microsoft PFEs laugh during our coffee break though.

You also have python and R stored procedures. Is it written in python?

I'm talking about the whole banking sector in France.
grumpydba··on A high-speed network driver written in C, Rust, Go, C#, Java
Right now I'm using prometheus and grafana to monitor around 8k database servers (sql server too BTW). We have pricing applications using influxdb. Docker. Openstack. Minio. We also have mattermost.

All of this in a conservative big bank. My friends in the banking sector tell the same story.

True there are lots of c# enterprisey web apps.

However given the amount of boilerplate you describe, I cannot understand how such useful and reliable tools can be delivered in Go.

A hint:just because a language is not to your liking, it does not mean that it is not useful, performant and reliable.

grumpydba··on A high-speed network driver written in C, Rust, Go, C#, Java
Sql server written in C#? Please. None of it.
grumpydba··on A high-speed network driver written in C, Rust, Go, C#, Java
Yet in the infrastructure side, it's much more used than c#. Go figure.

>Golang in 15 years will likely converge and embrace many of the missing features of mature languages (its happening now already), especially if it wants to reach broader adoption.

Go is 10 years old already and picking new features at an extremely low rate, with no hints at a pace change.

I think error management and generics should be the only major changes to expect within the next 5 years. C# is more complex by an order of magnitude... And thus its evolution was and is still way faster.

grumpydba··on Homebrew removes MongoDB from core formulas
Yeah go ahead and try using such a byzantine license in big corps. I know my legal department wouldn't even dare taking the risk.
grumpydba··on Homebrew removes MongoDB from core formulas
> They tried to make their money by offering their tech as a service and found that they couldn't compete against the resources of large cloud providers who were happily profiting off of their (and the community's) hard work.

And now the community's hard work is licensed under a new and restrictive license which, due to legal constraints, cannot be used in entreprise setups.

grumpydba··on Homebrew removes MongoDB from core formulas
> I'm astonished at all the comments that vilify MongoDB Inc and then talk about moving to AWS's MongoDB clone. What sort of twisted world are we living in where a company makes a service, tries to sell the service, and then are lambasted when they try to prevent a competitor from copying it wholesale?

The bait and switch strategy is deceptive. It's aim is to milk customers to give some money back the the VCs. But this license minefield is user-hostile.

Users don't like companies exhibiting hostile behavior towards them. Simple.

grumpydba··on Introducing nushell

Which due to the naming conventions are still too verbose.

grumpydba··on Introducing nushell
> I know the long cased commands like Foo-Bar can be alienating to Unix folks at first, but have you tried just using aliases and not caring about casing.

You'd have to alias every command and every option to make it enjoyable for interactive use.

And of course those aliases would need to be part of the standards powershell.

grumpydba··on Singapore Says Musk's Electric Cars Are About 'Lifestyle,' Not Climate
It's all about the density of this state/city which makes individual car ownership pretty impractical.

I don't think teslas are needed in Singapore, but it doesn't mean they are not needed elsewhere.

I think SGP's PM is a bit too focused on his country to judge that.

grumpydba··on Thoughts on Rust bloat
> it's very convenient for making simple UIs.

It's not that convenient on Linux though...

grumpydba··on Old Paris Is No More
> Perhaps an aspect of it Parisian's Paris and tourist's Paris is fundamentally different, and the current leadership is more or less trying to undo a lot of what Haussman stood for to make Paris friendlier to live for Parisians. Whole blocks are closed cars to bring back shops and 'village' like environment.

Yes Haussman was definitely wrong when he planned a city for cars. More seriously just check paintings or videos of Paris before the expansion of individual cars. Read books. It was highly walkable.
