grudg3··on Running Arch Linux on the Framework Laptop 13
You can, I'm going through this exercise now. Look at nixos-anywhere and disko. It's not easy though, NixOS is a rabbit hole.
grudg3··on You Need to Pay Your Engineers
While I can empathize with being underappreciated as an engineer, I struggle to understand how you attracted all these bad experiences? Is this more common when working at startups? Is it more common when working in US? Are you leaving out parts of the story that gets you in these situations?

I'm legitimately curious, I've been working in tech for close to 17 years and have had my share of bad experiences but have mostly managed to avoid these crazy stories and have always had a good recommendation from the previous job as I tried not to burn bridges.

Gavin Belson had the right vision after all.
grudg3··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
It adds a lot to the cost, and I am not protected by the New Zealand consumer laws in case something isn't right with the product. Way too risky for my liking.
grudg3··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
Yes, Frameworks are amazing on paper, and yet I still can't purchase one in New Zealand but I can easily purchase Apple hardware.
grudg3··on The new desktop Outlook is a bad idea
> Searching old emails is way faster and easier in the web version. It takes up no space on my machine, and there are not thousands of potentially sensitive emails sitting on the hard drive of a laptop I carry around. Way better all around.

Do Mac computers not encrypt their drives? Like Bitlocker on Windows?

Having sensitive information on your laptop should not be a worry if your IT team does their job right.

grudg3··on The real lesson of The Truman Show
Thank you, this site is great
grudg3··on The real lesson of The Truman Show
I think it's acceptable to discuss endings on a 25 year old movie.

Hi, will this work on AMD Gpu? I have plenty of VRAM available
grudg3··on Lessons learned from 15 years of SumatraPDF, an open source Windows app (2021)
> It also blows my mind that Windows still doesn't come with a proper built-in PDF viewer like macOS does.

Usually that viewer is the browser, so by default Edge is the default PDF viewer.

grudg3··on Hacker News Parody Thread (2013)
I usually just lurk but as it happens I am an expert in this topic and I need to disagree with everything the OP said.
grudg3··on Devenv.sh: Fast and reproducible developer environments using Nix
This looks interesting but it seems that if you're wanting to use specific versions of two separate packages, that are not in the same nixpkgs commit, you're a bit out of luck. For example, if I want to use an older version of Terraform with a newer version of the Terraform AzureRM provider, I couldn't quite figure out a way to do it...
grudg3··on Insider Trading in Cryptocurrency Markets
For me the word cryptocurrency and scam are synonyms. And in my mind people defending it on the internet are inside the pyramid scheme and trying to justify their investment.

Just one of the many cancers affecting our current society.

grudg3··on Productivity porn
I read this in my head like the intro to Trainspotting.
grudg3··on Asus put out like 40 models of a laptop called the “Eee PC” (2021)
I had one as well and loved it. One day someone broke into the flat and it got stolen. I still think about it sometime. It was really a great form factor.
