grubbs··on FTC Issues Orders to Eight Companies Seeking Information on Surveillance Pricing
But not Palantir? Damn.
grubbs··on Congress accidentally legalized THC six years ago
Is this the reason I could legally buy weed in Nashville, TN a few weeks ago? It sounded like there were some crazy loophole there.
grubbs··on Cannabis use linked to epigenetic changes, study reveals
Edibles also seem to make my body work overtime to process. I always feel like crap the next day.
grubbs··on Cannabis use linked to epigenetic changes, study reveals
I get the "what about alcohol" argument from the standpoint of being able to make your own decision to do a drug without the government interfering.

But it's not an argument to prove that weed is harmless. Its definitely not.

grubbs··on The Fall of the House of Etsy
If you enjoy beer basically any brewery is having some sort of makers market / flea market / local artist event on the weekends.
grubbs··on It looks a lot like VMware just lost a 24,000-VM customer
I believe it's all Supermicro hardware. We looked into it as well (higher ed) and it was just way too expensive for their NX servers with Intel Silver CPUs.

I've heard stories that it's usually low cost to enter, but when you want more CPU/storage it's ungodly expensive.

Even the initial quote for three hosts was ridiculous for the CPUs offered.

grubbs··on Students invent quieter leaf blower
Was yours the pizza transport box for Pizza Hut? ;)
grubbs··on Discord Applying Forced Arbitration - opt-out before it is too late!
I literally can't keep up with every company I do business with. It's impossible so I just give up.
grubbs··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
I'm reading here on local news there were multiple construction vehicles on the bridge when it collapsed.
grubbs··on For Brilliant Color: Packaging the First LSD Blotter
Reminded me of this article:

https://www.vice.com/en/article/7b7kv4/mark-mccloud-collects...

Mark McCloud has about 30,000 tabs of LSD. He collects them, frames them, and catalogues them in his San Francisco home, which is why Mark gets periodically arrested by the DEA.

grubbs··on The Lost Worlds of Telnet (2019)
I used this to teach my students Wireshark and intercepting unencrypted communications :)
grubbs··on Ask HN: What are your oldest "online" accounts still in use?
My DSLReports is my oldest! 1999.
grubbs··on OpenVPN Is Open to VPN Fingerprinting
Default config with port 1194 is super common with "anonymous" VPN providers. It can very well be fingerprinted. But I hope the data in transit would be secure. Maybe not from NSA.
grubbs··on Pirate IPTV Co. & Seven Workers Fined After Raids Eight Years Ago
This is a very accurate statement. Especially when I have non-technical family members buying them and bragging to me about it.

Reminds me of the 90's with those cable black boxes that gave you free HBO etc.

grubbs··on EV Charging Points in America Are Finally Making Money
I wish I could. I'm one of those city folk with street parking only.

There is a free charger within walking distance of my home, but it's always in use :(

grubbs··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
When I took the Network+ exam in 2008 there was a camera at every desk looking down on you. I didn't think much of it - still a little weird though.
grubbs··on ShotSpotter: listening in on the neighborhood
Even in Baltimore where police response times can be total garbage..they will show up for shot spotter. At least from my experience.

Calling 911 for anything else there is a long delay unfortunately. Last time I called for a car jacking right outside my home I was on hold for ten mins. Cops didn't arrive for another 20.

grubbs··on Serverless Horrors
So what do I do if this happens to me on the free tier? Just never pay the bill and leave? Will they come after me?
grubbs··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
The last point is a hard one when the perpetrator is a 11 year old kid who watched a TikTok video online on how to steal a Kia/Hyundai.
grubbs··on Nvidia surges about $500B in 6 wks, nearly much as Tesla is worth
I've tried to offer alternative options (Intel Gaudi, AMD, etc) to researchers here on campus. There is zero interest.
grubbs··on Appeals Court: FBI's Safe-Deposit Box Seizures Violated Fourth Amendment
Wells Fargo still offers them. FWIW.
grubbs··on Bad stuff going down at the American Sociological Association
Maybe they'd have to have a smaller holiday party?
grubbs··on What Was ISDN?
In my CCNA training in 2007ish we actually got to use an ISDN simulator of some sort. It was a large physical box. I think you can buy them on eBay still.

Pretty sure this is no longer on the CCNA unfortunately. Maybe just a small mention.

grubbs··on Warchalking
I think this is still covered on the CEH exam. Or at least mentioned along with war dialing, wardiving, etc.
grubbs··on AMD's CDNA 3 Compute Architecture
I'm not sure how accurate this is. I work at a university supporting researchers doing all the typical "AI" research. LLMs, CV, etc. All NVIDIA discounts is the A5000 card for EDU. Maybe one other card they aren't interested in (L40?). Most are buying A6000 and up at consumer prices from companies like Exxact and Supermicro.

I don't think I've seen a single researcher get a free GPU since the V100 era. (DGX-1) system.

grubbs··on Chinese Factories Dismantling Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 "Gaming" GPUs
Consumer grade cards are strictly forbidden in data center environments due to Nvidia license agreement. But there are even US companies that will sell you eight 4090s in a 4U box with all cooling shrouds removed in place of liquid cooling.
grubbs··on I will always prefer to work from home
My fingers get SO cold. Literally to the point I'm about to wear gloves.

Every couple hours I'll thaw them out against the space heater..

Any other hacks for this are welcome. Exercises?

grubbs··on I will always prefer to work from home
I understand why these get posted. But not everyone is in the same situation as the author.

I can bike to work, I'm extroverted, and I like free coffee. So I go into the office 2-3 days a week by choice. I have no on-site requirement. I also get quite depressed in winter working in my cold basement office with a space heater :(

But that's just me. And I don't feel like I should force my WFH opinion on anyone else.

grubbs··on Microsoft pulls OneDrive update that would quiz you before letting you quit
I work at a private university that has gone all-in with MS. We have OneDrive and I believe custom BGP routes straight to Azure with 200G pipes.

This product is complete garbage. I try to upload/share large files to individuals within the institution. It constantly fails when upload or downloading anything over 5GB. The pipe to my desk is 1000/1000. What is the issue? Is OneDrive literally only meant to be used for documents yet we're told by central IT to use it for research data?

grubbs··on Supermicro Racks Up the System Revenues
Dell won't even sell you "dumb" storage for zfs. I can get 1PB for less than 30k in a 60 bay SM chassis.
