grovegames··on Apple’s Devices Lose Luster in American Classrooms
I love my daily typing with the elevator. (me)->floor[6+1]
grovegames··on Uber is doomed
It would explain how we have the big 4, and not the big 94. Some like yahoo get carved up more publicly, but they all do in the end.
grovegames··on SHA1 collisions make Git vulnerable to attacks
To put that in perspective, that's roughly the loaded rate of a salaried ~80k employee; roughly. So we're talking a single hire in a nice city.
grovegames··on Robots Aren’t Killing the American Dream
This is another one of those areas, where, when you read the article it makes sense, but it's based in a flaw in our use of the term automation. The robots coming, aren't there to improve your performance, they're there to not just replace your job, but do it cheaper than you, for next to no cost.

To compare this to automation in the pass is a false equivalency, as humans have always been needed to be a part of the chain in some capacity. In short order, a McDonald's will not only have an entire store run by automation, the maintenance will be done by automation, and the factory where the parts are created will also be in that restaurant in the form of a 3D printer and same day delivery systems via drone.

Once this is established in a proven model, humans cannot improve upon this, and the need for humans for almost any task decreases immediately. Niche boutiques will pop up with human made burgers, but they will be like fine dining, and seen as a treat if done well, cashing in on mostly the nostalgia of those that we're not born natively to this environment.

grovegames··on Happy 15th Birthday .NET
I remember starting a project for a Telco in C# before .Net was officially released. It was riddled with issues, but it made it easy to use COM+ as a means to hot swap 'plugins' to the core of the application. This allowed us to distribute one application, and have a configuration dynamically load which modules a user would need based on their role. The web wasn't very capable 15+ years ago, and this allowed for a single base to be maintained and yet shared modules to cut down on repetitive coding. You could do this with COM+ already, but manually working with IQueryInterface over a simple reflections added more complexity than was worth it. And when you needed to, you could easily make calls to the Windows API, so you could still do code injection to get past the parts when the language didn't support yet. And DLL hell was no longer so prevalent. I was told somewhat recently that it's still running in some capacity, which I'm glad of, because I remember stressing over how irresponsible it was to use an untested language and platform for such a project.
grovegames··on Elon Musk: Humans must merge with machines or become irrelevant in AI age
Tone, intonation, and pauses add color to the language, and are by no means required. Think of them like spices, which add to the flavour, but not to the nutritional value or substance of the language. I have never had a thought I couldn't express with written words. Tone, intonation, and pauses can round out a story, or make communication slightly more succinct, but language exist both with and without these. And again, these are not required.

And concerning the computers ability, a computer can capture microexpressions that we may miss by looking away to collect our thoughts or to remember something, etc... Computers can do this now, and there is no reason to expect this gets worse. As someone who is likely on the spectrum, I look forward to the day when a computer can tell me when people are bored of me talking to them. I'd like that very much.

grovegames··on Elon Musk: Humans must merge with machines or become irrelevant in AI age
Really, because the vast majority of my communication happens over phone, text or the interent. Micro expressions don't exist in these medium at all, and are therefore not nearly as important as you're giving them credit. Critical thinking is important, but don't mix that with sour grapes.
grovegames··on Announcing GVFS: Git Virtual File System
I've built a personalized linux from the kernel up a couple times, and it never even popped into my head. Lets be fair to Microsoft, the nix world is vast, and not exactly easy to navigate if you don't live there. I live in all three worlds, and there are only so many letters. It drives me nuts when I just want a code name for a project, because I can no longer find unique words that aren't used by some project somewhere.

I mean, git itself did this in the beginning.

Microsoft, under Nadella has made me not hate Microsoft again, and that's a tall order because I'm over 40. This is an impressive move, and if they effectively execute all the bits that are possible here, this is just some great work.

(Oh, and I can't even use the word nix now as a catch all for all the POSIX/ POSIX(like) OSs because of nixOS.)

I think going forward, we just have to accept name collision.

grovegames··on John Carmack on expert witnesses and 'non literal' copying
If this were true of human nature, we would not have creationism.
grovegames··on GitLab Database Incident – Live Report
Transparency should be like a sheer dress, enough to see, but still covering the bits that need to stay hidden.

This is just nudity.

grovegames··on Parse is shutting down today
From my understanding, it provided services that you would have to create from scratch in your own infrastructure that would be a significant undertaking. For instance, push notification in iOS is a bit of a nuisance if your app really doesn't rely on a complex server back end, but you would like to still add push notifications. Parse did this portion for you, so you could focus on the product. I could be wrong though, I looked at it a year ago, and my memory isn't what it used to be.
grovegames··on Wine 2.0 released
I'm using the professionally, so legally is important. But thanks for the suggestion.
grovegames··on Wine 2.0 released
Will this be able to run Photoshop CC? I am desperately trying to move most of the production pipeline to linux, but Photoshop CC is the one product I can't seem to replace. I've mitigated part of this with 3D-Coat, but if I could have a native Photoshop CC on linux, it would be close to perfect.
grovegames··on Ask HN: What sort of side-projects are useful for getting jobs?
Apply for the mid levels anyway. I never post for a junior position, because we don't have the time and money required to train you up to where you need to be. However, part of this is also about confidence. If you're fresh out of school, but you code as a hobby, and are really into learning about how code works, and have some chops, then depending on the hiring round, you can easily score higher than a mid level dev that has simply worked with Visual Studio his whole career and is inept if an IDE isn't there to hold your hand the whole way through. That's beyond useless to me.
grovegames··on Ask HN: What sort of side-projects are useful for getting jobs?
There is no such thing as a finished project. Just one you no longer work on.
grovegames··on Standard Notes – A notes app with a focus on longevity, portability, and privacy
My needs for searching through my notes isn't 'yada yada'. And attempting to justify it by using a single dictionary definition, isn't logic, it's wordplay. My definition of notes is any piece of information that I may need at short notice that is easier to jot down than to google.
grovegames··on IBM's “Think” Motto in Chinese
The way I think of it is "keep this in your mind". Though, I'm native English, with 9 years of classes over 20 years ago living in Western Canada. So take that with a gran of salt.
