grokys··on How one announcement damaged the .NET ecosystem on Windows
And indeed it wasn't popular at all with devs: http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-8-developers-are-shunni...
grokys··on Stopping All Stations – The Pyongyang Metro
Have you ever travelled any metro at rush hour?
grokys··on I am on the Kill List. This is what it feels like to be hunted by drones
How can you say that? You're happy a sentence a man and his family in a far-off country to death based on what exactly?
grokys··on Are the Russians Actually Behind the Panama Papers?
Interestingly the Unaoil scandal wasn't even reported by the BBC (except a brief mention on their World Service). I'm interested to know exactly why this scandal on the other hand is being covered so heavily by them and other outlets.
grokys··on Are the Russians Actually Behind the Panama Papers?
Or to use the same logic, maybe the lack of Americans implicated in the Panama papers indicates the the US is behind them?
grokys··on Visual Studio 2015 Update 2
No, I just did the online update.
grokys··on Microsoft Announces Converter for Bringing Win32 Apps to the Windows Store
Even before the iPhone came out, people used the abbreviation "app" for "application".

Source: I was around then ;)

grokys··on Visual Studio 2015 Update 2
This version actually installed a lot faster than the last update for me. Still kinda slow but not half-a-day slow.
grokys··on Cross-platform Rust rewrite of the GNU coreutils
Slightly off-topic, but isn't Oracle a bit of a dangerous name to use? I seem to remember it was something to do with some big company or other... ;)
grokys··on Giving up on test-first development
This is becoming very off-topic, but if absolutism doesn't apply in the highly-ordered world of programming, to me it's even less likely to apply in messy real-life.
grokys··on Sugar tax surprise in U.K. budget, but growth forecasts cut
Not weird at all from where I stand: taxes cut to the rich, raised for the poor. Standard policy for Mr Osbourne.
grokys··on GitLab 8.5 released
We recently switched from a source package using MySQL to the omnibus package and the migration to Postgresql was really easy and went without a hitch.
grokys··on Al Jazeera America to Shut Down in April
Do you have anything to back this up? To me, they are biased to the establishment/center right, which seems borne out by at least one study:

grokys··on Modern Java – A Guide to Java 8
I'm not so up on Java, could someone explain why they chose "->" for lambdas instead of the "=>" that C# and ES6 use, as those languages seem to me like they would be the first place to look for inspiration.
grokys··on 'Zeno effect' verified: Atoms won't move while you watch
I think this video is a good explanation you can use to refer to people with that misunderstanding:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQfSm6o-KlQ

(Assuming it's correct - I'm not physicist)

grokys··on Facebook Relay: An Evil And/Or Incompetent Attack on REST
I think because the tone of the article itself is so horrible. I honestly couldn't read it.
grokys··on What people in 1900 thought the year 2000 would look like
Americans always assume you're from the US. Americans are famous for their unawareness of the world outside (as I'm sure you know, in reality)
grokys··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting older?
I'm 40 and I think I might be the only person who really just doesn't give a shit?

I mean, I feel a bit different, sure - but do I really feel much different to when I was 20? Not really. You do some things, then you do some other things, life continues. Maybe if you stop thinking so much about it you'll feel better.

grokys··on Announcing Rust 1.2
I don't think telling you how to format your code for a particular language is a bad thing. I am quite happy using { on a new line in C# but on the same line in JS, using underscore_separated_method_names in C and camelCasedMethodNames in Java. To me, once you've been round the block with more than one or two languages you can get used to whatever style, but using the style for the language that you're writing in is something you should try to do for other people who read your code.

Reading Java code that uses undercore_separated_method_names or C# code that uses camedCased immediately makes me think the author doesn't know what s/he's doing.

grokys··on From a million miles away, NASA camera shows moon crossing face of Earth
I'd suggest following the link that was posted.
grokys··on Listen to Wikipedia
Indeed, I was hoping it was going to be more stuff like this:

grokys··on The Evolution of V8 and the Challenges of Research in a Billion User VM [video]
I wonder how many of these techniques could be/are applied in other VMs such as the JVM or .NET?
grokys··on Provide a Visual Basic 6 Community Edition
It makes me wonder what sort of developer is still using VB6 and still liking it? I moved onto .NET around 2003 and even at that time it seemed such an improvement over VB6 that I couldn't imagine going back even then. Do you know any VB6 developers? What are they like?
grokys··on What Happens When a State Is Run by Movie Stars?
Wait, did you just equate caring for minorities and people in positions where they can easily be taking advantage of, to buying TVs for people branded with a politicians face? I think you did. And you did it in an incredibly condescending manner to boot. If that's what waking up feels like, I'd rather stay asleep thank you.
grokys··on Working at Microsoft (2004)
I am really tempted to set up a new account just so that I can post "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" to each MS article. Just that. Three words. Each article.

The only reason I don't do it is that I'm afraid it won't be distinguishable from a small percentage of the HN readership who do so seriously.

Really, it gets boring.

grokys··on Losing it All
This was a very touching story, and like others have said, I'm very pleased the author has found his feet again.

However, remember that for many people life is like this every day and has been since childhood. These people don't have the resources, skills or networks to pull themselves out of such situations as did the author.

Next time you're tempted to judge someone who has less than you (and everyone judges based on their own experiences, it's all we can do) - remember that you've had it good, despite the downs and maybe they deserve some help too.

This is something I need to keep reminding myself of regularly.

grokys··on CoreCLR is now open source
Just a quick plug then for my own project: https://github.com/grokys/Perspex/
grokys··on Show HN: C#-to-JavaScript compiler powered by Microsoft Roslyn
That can be made even simpler in C#:

var blah = () => "im a function";

grokys··on Show HN: C#-to-JavaScript compiler powered by Microsoft Roslyn
In what way is it more difficult in C#? C# has lambda syntax:

   obj.Function(() => { ... });
grokys··on Practical and Portable X86 Recompilation (2014)
What are the legal implications of this? As far as I understood reverse engineering using disassembled code isn't legal. And this isn't just reading the disassembled code - they're taking it wholesale.
