grokys··on It took two days to develop Moderna’s vaccine
I've been wondering - would it be possible that something like HIV comes along, only airborne? This would be a nightmare scenario obviously, but is it possible?
grokys··on Manufacturing plant fire threatens worldwide vinyl record supply
Maybe this is pretentious, but to say vinyl sounds "better" or "warmer" is missing the point for me. IMO one thing that records have is "personality". Those clicks and cracks of the old records I found for £2 in a jumble sale, and their stained jackets that have been passed around since the 1950s become part of the listening experience. You're connecting with the history of the music in some way.

The pure sound of those crackles are important to more modern music too. Think about how many modern records add record noise to add atmosphere. Burial's Untrue or Portishead's Dummy wouldn't sound the same without them.

grokys··on .NET Core 3.0
We're trying to do that over at https://github.com/AvaloniaUI/Avalonia if you're interested. Doesn't have MS (or any other company's) backing, and is still in beta, but quite usable for creating x-plat apps. You can see some projects built on it here https://github.com/AvaloniaUI/Avalonia/wiki/Projects-that-ar...

grokys··on Netherlands, Finland, Luxembourg, Poland and Italy Oppose EU Copyright Directive
Ah yes, apologies if I overstated. I should perhaps have said "some people in many parts of Italy still resent...". I'm often told by friends from the south about how the north treated the south during and after unification, and from what I understand there is still a lingering resentment there. I think the point still stands that Italy is not example of a "naturally arisen" national identity anyway.

grokys··on Netherlands, Finland, Luxembourg, Poland and Italy Oppose EU Copyright Directive
Italy was unified in 1871, in part by force. And many parts of Italy still resent that and consider themselves Sicilian, Napolitan etc rather than "Italian".

I can't speak for Greece, but Italy is a really BAD example of a "naturally arisen" national identity. In fact the (now second party) Northern League's sole purpose until Matteo Salvini was to split Northen Italy from the south.

If you're interested in seeing how a GraphQL client might look in .NET, over at GitHub we've been working on an experimental LINQ-like GraphQL client for our APIs:

https://github.com/octokit/octokit.graphql.net/

It only supports the GitHub GraphQL API right now, but everything is generated from the schema so it should be possible to make it support other APIs.

I find that if your comments consist solely of commented out code, then you both don't need to comment in English and you remove the need for an SCM.

grokys··on How to speed up the Rust compiler some more
I think the Roslyn compiler does something similar to what you're suggesting.

http://www.dotnetcurry.com/csharp/1258/dotnet-platform-compi...

> Every time a developer changes a single character in any of the files, a new copy of all the data structures is created, leaving the previous version unchanged. This allows a high level of parallelism and concurrency in the Roslyn engine, as well as in its consumers, thereby preventing any race conditions to occur. Of course, in the interest of performance, these operations are highly optimized and reuse as much of the existing data structures as possible. Again, those being immutable makes this possible!

grokys··on I gave commit rights to someone I didn't know
Yep, something similar happened to me - I released what is now https://github.com/punker76/gong-wpf-dragdrop on google code in 2009 (I think) then pretty much lost interest. Forward on a few years and @punker76 had uploaded it to github, and continued working on it. It was a strange feeling when I first became aware of the fork - like seeing an inanimate object come to life.

And in most places in the world, that is basically unobtainable. A rather serious case of SV-myopia here I suspect.
grokys··on Avalonia Alpha 4 – A cross-platform .NET UI framework
It's based on the XAML family of frameworks so lookless controls are probably the biggest differentiator between the frameworks you mentioned. Qt is C++, I've not tried any .Net bindings for it so I can't really compare. Xamarin uses native controls, which just a different approach really. Electron is great but you're embedding chromium in an OS window which doesn't work for everyone.
grokys··on Avalonia Alpha 4 – A cross-platform .NET UI framework
Yeah UWP has a lot of good features but I always find when I go to it that it just lacks so many basics. It's like they kept building good stuff on top of Silverlight which stripped out a lot of useful stuff. Having said that I've not used it extensively (I had a good stab at Metro, but man that sucked) and ever since haven't gone back.

It's not x-plat either ;)

Obviously with Avalonia we have a long way to go (hence the Alpha) so we're getting the basics down first.

Layout on the UI thread is definitely a limitation too. I'd be interested to hear ideas as to how it could be done in a threaded manner.

grokys··on Some news from LWN
>I must say that this website comes across as very unprofessional due to the total lack of any design elements which would make it more easy to consume the content (spacing, choice of font)

> Nathan Willis, who has been an LWN contributor for many years and an employee since 2012, will be stepping down at the end of September to pursue an unmissable opportunity to study one of his non-journalistic passions: fonts and type design.

grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Because I hate them.

EDIT: Ok, I'll explain :) : because when I open a file, I want to see the code, not folded regions telling me that it has constructors, properties, and methods. That's not interesting to me, it just obfuscates. There used to be an argument for using them for generated code, but partial classes are a much better choice for that.

#regions make me unreasonably irritated ;)

grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Custom controls are supported, although I'm not sure that inheriting from Canvas is the best way to do that. See e.g. https://github.com/Core2D/Core2D for an example of an application with lots of custom controls.
grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Yep, we have a Direct2D backend (in fact that's our main one - the others are lagging behind a little)
grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Honestly - no idea. However our backends are pluggable so in theory you should be able to adapt it.

However, I imagine our performance at the moment exclude use in games. It's something that needs to be optimized.

grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
There's already https://github.com/picoe/Eto if you want to use native controls - if that's what you need go for it! But there's a need for both approaches IMO and hopefully Avalonia can start to fill one of those!

EDIT: Ah you edited your question: yes controls are fully styleable - the reason we've got the "modern" look so far is simply because it's easy! More themes, and "native" looking themes are definitely welcome.

grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Yep, I agree - Eto is great for native controls! I consider Eto and Avalonia to complement each other rather than as competitors.
grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Yep! The main thing that's holding me back personally is that we'd have to convert our .csprojs to project.json... And then convert them back in a few months/a year when core moves back to .csproj. So seems like wasted effort to me right now...
grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Yes this is definitely something we need to do. Unfortunately it's not something I'm very familiar with, but contributions welcome! ;)
grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
Not really thought about unity in particular, but we do have game ui as a potential use-case.
grokys··on Avalonia – A multi-platform .NET UI framework
No not currently - were still working on the core at the moment, though I think we're just about ready for it now if anyone was interested in starting on it.

grokys··on .NET Core Is Boiling the Ocean
I honestly think a lot of the problems come down to naming: their betas were alphas and their RCs definitely were not release candidates - they were betas.

Microsoft has always been terrible with versioning and though things seem to be improving there's still a long way to go.
