grizzles··on Ask HN: Do you still own a printer?
My wife bought one over my strenuous objections. I think it broke shortly after she bought it. I noticed it disappeared recently from its sitting place so looks like the situation has resolved itself.
grizzles··on Our eighth generation TPUs: two chips for the agentic era
Are they refreshing the coral project with these? The coral project for edge ai apps seems like it needs a refresh.
grizzles··on Show HN: ElixirBrowser – Android Chromium fork with extensions, inspired by Kiwi
Could I grab your email? Or email me - mine is in my HN profile. I'd like to pay you to develop a feature for me.
grizzles··on Ask HN: Is a JVM/CDP based browser agent stack fundamentally a bad idea?
Open source it and you'll get all the feedback you desire.
grizzles··on Applets are officially gone, but Java in the browser is better
Compose multiplatform is the spiritual successor to JVM in the browser. Compiles to wasm, modern api, great developer experience. It's kotlin so not java, but easy for java developers to learn.
grizzles··on Scientists race to make 'living' computers powered by human cells
Reminds me of the movie, the Matrix.
grizzles··on $2 WeAct Display FS adds a 0.96-inch USB information display to your computer
Seems perfect for a YubiKey type of device. Know where your authenticating to.
grizzles··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
I wasn't aware of obtainium. Thank you. I was thinking of something more like Google Chrome mobile edition but for APKs. So more focus around the search interface.
grizzles··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
This must be because of Epic's win in antitrust court.

What someone needs to do is create a "Store" browser that loads apps from random websites like https://site.tld/app.apk

You could manually parse AndroidManifest.xml and allow only apps that expose <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />

I'm somewhat interested in doing this myself actually. What do people think?

grizzles··on How Hyper built a 1M-accurate indoor GPS
In my view, you need to 'streetview' the world's shopping malls and make this a free app, the Hyper Browser. Add product search & reviews and drive traffic away from non-customer stores.
grizzles··on Meta Joins Kotlin Foundation
I use kotlin at work every day and I'm suprised it (and particular Kotlin/Compose Multiplatform) are not more popular. It's a true alternative to javascript that lets you share native ui code across web, ios, android, desktop and more (eg. watchOS).
grizzles··on Elon Musk Wants to Privatize the Postal Service and Amtrak
Privatising the Postal Service is an ok idea, anyone can do that job (eg. FedEX, UPS, etc). Privatising Amtrak is a different kettle of fish, it is a natural monopoly on critical infrastructure. In that situation prices will go up if private investors buy it. Increased freight costs will inevitably be passed onto consumers. Anything privatised like this (eg. electricity transmission lines) has been shown to be a net loss for consumers.
grizzles··on How to leak under the Trump administration
First test: You need to enter your email to read the article. Isn't this the same site that doxxed Reality Winner by providing original PDF sources?
grizzles··on To make electricity cheaper and greener, connect the world's grids
The sun is always shining somewhere on earth.

One day solar energy will be shifted from Portugal to Shanghai & Moscow then across the Bering Strait to Alaska & New York.

grizzles··on DivestOS ROM shuts after ten years
Thanks for your comments. I didn't realize settings allowed you to turn those off. Now fixed. Hallelujiah.
grizzles··on DivestOS ROM shuts after ten years
I want a (preferably open source) android phone without spam. I'd pay a healthy amount for it. I don't want to flash roms or do anything like that.

Anyone tried the Fairphone? How is it for notification spam?

grizzles··on Two upstart search engines are teaming up to take on Google
They need to make a browser with new features. That is the route to getting new search users.
grizzles··on GJS: Node.js Like Runtime for Gnome
I want to be able to use HTML/JS to design my desktop and call APIs. Can I do that with gjs or is it this GTK namespace and GTK-CSS like language only? It would be really cool to design the background from the Ubuntu crown to a bunch of widgets of information I use daily.
grizzles··on Air travel is not ready for electronic warfare
A perfect use case for public key cryptography. Digitally sign the GPS coords!
grizzles··on Firefox Keeps Getting Faster
I'm a firefox user on Ubuntu. They need to improve the cold start time badly. It currently takes me 4-5 minutes from launch to page load. Once loaded I have no issues with the performance but Chrome is vastly superior in this area.

EDIT: I rely highly on the Restore Previous Session feature. That might be why.

grizzles··on The hunt for life in Alpha Centauri
They might be better off searching for phosphorus.[1]

grizzles··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
If you're an OpenAI engineer, now would be a good time to ask for a raise.
grizzles··on NANDputer Lives (2013)
Homomorphic encryption is a real, somewhat scary practical application of something like this in VM form. Because most applied homomorphic research libraries just target the NAND gate and leave the rest of the 'problem' to computer engineers.
grizzles··on A 3D-printed ethernet RJ45 clip to secure/repair/fix broken tab (2020)
Ethernet / RJ45 could displace USB 3/4. It's technically superior in every way. The only barrier that I can see is the standards folk would need to come up with a new RJ45 connector that is designed for end users.
grizzles··on The Browser Company’s Darin Fisher thinks it’s time to reinvent the browser
The feature I most want in a browser is for them to enable client side ssl certificates for password free signin. The UI is actually quite trivial to implement and it would turn the entire internet into a single social network, sidestepping the awfulness [1] of existing solutions like openid-connect. [1] It's awful because it gives a company's entire customer list to google, facebook, etc. That used to be called goodwill and it is/was the lifeblood of bricks and mortar companies.
grizzles··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
It will be all electric because electric cars will be the most affordable. You can buy decent $3000 electric cars from alibaba.com today. [1] Check out this article about it. [2]

grizzles··on Ask HN: Where do you find weird and wonderful future tech nowadays?
IEEE Spectrum -> https://spectrum.ieee.org/
grizzles··on Gamestonk Terminal – Stock and crypto market terminal
Yep I'll be a customer. Not having to apply for keys / the API aggregation feature alone is enough for it to be worth it to me. That it's built for python data stack on top is the icing on the cake.
grizzles··on Open Source Farming Robot
If you have that much excess power I wonder if you could solve the precision water problem with tanks that top up by wringing it out of atmosphere in humid climates.

Perhaps cooled coils: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_water_generator

Wind power to shake the water off

grizzles··on Flutter 2
Hope they bundle a native webview with flutter with a consistent api across platforms. The web will always be a unique case, but that would be epic for other platforms. I'm not coding so much these days but I still want it. :)
