grisha··on Ask HN: How to learn about text editor architectures and implementations?
An excellent tutorial for terminal based text editor from scratch: https://viewsourcecode.org/snaptoken/kilo/
grisha··on The Suspected Poisoning of Alexey Navalny, Putin’s Most Prominent Adversary
Like, lots of resources and consequently failure to move from extensive to intensive growth mindset?
grisha··on Bill Joy's greatest gift to man – the vi editor (2003)
I’d also add https://www.vimgolf.com/ as very powerful way to improve vim skills.
grisha··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
“Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software” by Charles Petzold should be what you are looking for. Author describes computing from the very ground up, and in clean, approachable manner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code:_The_Hidden_Language_of_C...
grisha··on The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius
I think bus ticket collecting was chosen as an example by the author exactly because starting a company about it is ridiculous to think about. So we can discuss just inner interest in something without thinking about outer reward.
grisha··on Ask HN: Where I can post my startup to get beta users?
Hmm. It seems to me, that if you answer such a question, then you do not know who your users are. And this is not good for your startup. Because you have to know your users to be able to fix problems worth fixing. So try ask another question. Who are my users? And what actual problem I want to fix for them? Then, I think, you will be able to find a way to them.
grisha··on Why women lose the dating game
Professional and educated guy will still be able to earn his money when he'll become a father, but it's not true for that professional and educated woman.
grisha··on So you want to offer a public API …
You might want to offer pub/sub API, and it just can't be done with REST because of it's statelessness.
grisha··on Sparrow acquired by Google
Will you still prefer desktop app if you get all its benefits with web app?
grisha··on Backbone Aura Developer Preview
It seems that TDD is not the best approach to design such framework. When you expect your api change frequently on early stages, tests may be trhown away wery fast and be useless. So it's better to delay writing tests for time, when api becomes stable more or less. You need to know what to test before actually test.
grisha··on Show HN: Commandlinefu.com from the commmandline
execute command.
grisha··on Show HN: Commandlinefu.com from the commmandline
Cool stuff. I am curious how hard it would be to implement something like fu -e #, so you can just pass desired arguments, instead of manually tweaking command from clipboard.
grisha··on Show HN: Hacker News Mobile - A fast and readable mobile HN website
Very nice. I read HN from my iPhone a lot, and it's mobile version would be very handy.

However, using this, I quickly realised that original design has some advantages (though, maybe it is just habit issues). Usually I scan frontpage fast for new highrated entries to read first, and having 10 entries on screen in time is more suited for this. With 4 it's just another experience. I feel that I need more time to find something interesting.

Maybe you can improve this, for example, indicating rating with color or size of rating digits.

grisha··on You are not running out of time
“What I realized was that playing the game the right way isn’t good enough – it needs to be played for the right reason: it has to be played to build something, to see something grow. Gordon wasn’t building anything at all, not even a family, and his emptiness showed dramatically.”

Gordon suffered because of split personality: one was enjoying the game he played, another was generated by social pressing – goals like family, relationships and so on. When you see something grow, you are measuring that. When you measure something, you compare that with similar things. When you compare, you trace your progress balance. When you trace, you predict wanted future. And whole this way leads to “moving goals”.

Author began from right point – it’s all about feeling and enjoying moment. That’s all.

grisha··on Text message blows up suicide bomber by accident

grisha··on Flattr is now in open beta
Cool. But what is flattr?
