griomnib··on Sony ends production of Blu-ray Disc, recordable MiniDisc, and MiniDV media
Yup. That’s my guess as well, but on the other hand there is a pretty large industry serving the many people who do have a decent home theater system (and even some where it’s more “theater” than “home”).

As somebody who has a very nice (and expensive) 5.1 set up, I’m legitimately a bit worried about this trend.

The primary value of Blu-ray to me is on a good home theater system the audio is going to be so much better than a stream.

The visual fidelity on a good 4k streamer is hard to tell the difference between Blu-ray (you can, it’s just not glaring), but even the sound on a DVD beats any streamer.

griomnib··on Feeling Targeted: Executive Order Ending Wasteful DEIA Efforts
That’s fair, you’re right.

In my defense, I’ve been advocating for accessibility in computing for over 20 years, and reading the original post really enraged me as it goes against all I stand for, hence reacting too strongly here.

griomnib··on Feeling Targeted: Executive Order Ending Wasteful DEIA Efforts
Yea but people’s RSUs are up, that’s all that matters to the Silicon Valley voter. Screw the weak.

griomnib··on Google Fiber is coming to Las Vegas
Yes and it’s not profitable enough to be worthwhile - unrestricted spying changes that.
griomnib··on Google Fiber is coming to Las Vegas
So the FCC is going to let them spy on the last mile with no restrictions. Nice of Sundar to come back from DC with a gift.
griomnib··on OpenAI has upped its lobbying efforts nearly sevenfold
The CEOs and investor class are the elites. Politicians answer to them, not the other way around.
griomnib··on OpenAI has upped its lobbying efforts nearly sevenfold
Give me a break, that’s fine for rounding and a huge gap between SCC and San Francisco and Santa Cruz. SCC is the outlier in the region, and a good percentage of HN is very pro-Trump because a good percentage of HN is pro-greed.

And the point about Chinese being among the most pro-Trump is South Bay stands - I have had several conversations and most people from mainland (RIP HK) see zero problem with authoritarian rule.

griomnib··on OpenAI has upped its lobbying efforts nearly sevenfold
HN audience is essentially pro-Trump as well. 1/3rd of Santa Clara county (heart of Silicon Valley) voted for him, and a lot of tech employees come from authoritarian countries (China) and really see nothing wrong with authoritarian rule.
griomnib··on OpenAI has upped its lobbying efforts nearly sevenfold
This is so clearly a complete lie - in what universe is some top government official in the United States telling corporations to a) fall behind competing nations in advanced technology, b) set back our technological edge in the military, c) degrade the USA ability to spy on and control information access/controls in other countries, or d) do anything other than fish for an insider trading opportunity.

4. Trump and Altman are both serial liars and it’s utter bullshit.
griomnib··on Stargate Project: SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, MGX to build data centers
Altman is pivoting from WorldCoin to TrumpCoin - your retina will shortly be wired into the fascist meme-o-verse.

Or AGI already exists and is trying to get rid of us so it can have all the coal for itself.
griomnib··on Stargate Project: SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, MGX to build data centers
How else do you think Trump is going to bring back all the coal jobs? SV is going to help burn down the planet and is giddy over the prospect.

I just really don’t want to work up a PhD thesis on the current state of Linux desktops before I switch. But I think I have to.

My primary complaint is the aggression to turn it on. You don’t get an option of “No” any more just “Not Now” which is openly user hostile as it implies I can’t make my own choices, I can only delay the inevitable. They’ve been doing that for a while now and each time it pushes me a little closer to leaving the ecosystem.

Then there’s the fact that I hate photos, mail, and the rest of it - which they turn on by default and then you have to disable. The fact that Apple Music works fine in my car but for some reason all other music apps are buggy.

Apple News won’t let me block news sources, anything I try to block stays in my feed just greyed out. Like, I’m not allowed to keep BuzzFeed out of my feed? Wtf.

Then there’s the sick charade of their “privacy” claims, which I won’t even get into, but it’s laughable.

They went from being the most user-focused company to nakedly extracting rent from a captive audience. I no longer feel I own my Apple devices, they own me, and I’m sick of it.

griomnib··on A notification for you, Apple: There is no husband
The most recent versions of macOS and iPhone OS have me seriously considering a Linux desktop for the first time. That is almost completely due to the fact that Apple Intelligence is so bad and I’m forced to disable it across every single app. This is not the type of stuff Steve Jobs would’ve shipped.

The butterfly keyboard is undoubtedly the biggest fail in hardware design of the past 10 years. They took something that we figured out in the 1970s and somehow managed to screw it up and held onto it for three consecutive generations.

You’re only as good as your last product, and Johnny Ive under the hand of Steve Jobs is a lot different than Johnny Ive under the hand of Tim Apple.

griomnib··on Has LLM killed traditional NLP?
Yeah, that’s what I do: use LLM to help make training data for small models. It’s ao much more efficient, fast, and ergo, scalable.
griomnib··on Has LLM killed traditional NLP?
This assumes you don’t care about our rapidly depleting carbon budget.

No matter how much energy you save personally, running your jobs on Sam A’s earth killer ten thousand cluster of GPUs is literally against your own self interest of delaying climate disasters.

LLM have huge negative externalities, there is a moral argument to only use them when other tools won’t work.

griomnib··on Has LLM killed traditional NLP?
Or you can build a DistilBERT model and get your egregiously inefficient 2 seconds down to tens of milliseconds.
griomnib··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
There are some, like DOOM, but it’s not a lot. If Switch 2 can pull off PlayStation 4 quality I bet there’d be a bonanza of ports and some good money made.
griomnib··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
Astro Bot won game of the year because it had amazing graphics and physics and had Mario-tier fun. The team actually made a cryptic shout out to Nintendo at the award ceremony.

Nintendo has great games, but the resolution on TVs, even cheap ones, is outstanding now and it goes to waste using a Switch.

Playing a great game that also uses what the TV has on offer is really the best experience. If we get 4k and ray tracing on Switch I’ll be stoked.

I really think aside from games, media editing, and other such heavy activities, 90% of apps are, or should be, web views. What they are doing makes a lot of sense.
