gringomorcego··on Andy Hertzfeld on the Demise of the Mac Pro
Jesus christ, this sense of entitlement is fucking nuts.

Do you have a computer? Can it access the web? Is it less than 5 years old? Congratulations, you have a pretty amazing computer that should be able to do most things pretty reasonably.

I mean Jesus, some people make it seem like it's a personal attack when corporations don't pander to all.

gringomorcego··on Study predicts imminent irreversible planetary collapse
Dude, did you read the thesis? It's the main blue part at the top, like every paper in Nature.

It says that local ecosystems are known to go through critical transitions, and that what's make these transitions remarkable is that the tipping point is so hard to identify or predict. They are extrapolating this and saying that a global tipping point may exist as well. That's it.

You are right, it's incredibly vague and there isn't any awesome undeniable evidence. That's the whole point of the paper. "Hey guys, we might be screwing up our shit more than we think, we need to start taking more measurements" is basically the entire gist of the paper.

gringomorcego··on Chromium Blog: A Tale Of Two Pwnies (Part 2)
I think people are ignoring the end plan.

Native Client isn't for running apps quickly. It's for finally letting Google create a sandbox that they can run their own browser in.

Probably won't happen until HVM support is growing at a certain level.

gringomorcego··on Yelp accused of burying good customer reviews
Because it's their forum?

I really don't get it. I mean, could Zagat have gotten away with this in the pre-internet era? "Hey man, love your restaurant, but each star costs $100."

gringomorcego··on The Macroeconomics of Chinese kleptocracy
I wonder if anyone actually understood what the one child policy would have. I mean, was this predictable? Did the Chinese government know it was going to create this situation?
gringomorcego··on Michael Risch (noted IP law professor) Visits Groklaw
Again, will PJ please explain why her anonymity is necessary today? It's been too long with this charade, we need to know the benefactors.
gringomorcego··on Security vulnerability in MySQL ubuntu
where is the perl one-liner :P?
gringomorcego··on GNU Emacs 24.1 released
Thank you so much for ESK! It's really helped me get started in emacs. Also, could you think about adding undo-tree as a default for ESK? I really feel like that would be a worthy addition.
gringomorcego··on Real Life UX: Returning Items to Amazon Makes Me Smile
I wish Jeff Bezos quit being such a dictating dick when it came to the home page. I mean seriously, I fucking love amazon, why the hell is it so fucking unintuitive and feel like a time traveling 95 site.
gringomorcego··on Understanding Bitcoin
A very good point. Nobody likes talking about how owning >50% of the nodes let's you decide the fate of the network...
gringomorcego··on Study of 49 programmers: static type system had no effect on development time
Well I think the article hints at the real benefits from type systems. They took longer in the beginning understanding the type system, but made up for it later on by being able to finish in the same amount of time. Static systems be balling for refactoring.

Hopefully for the next experiment they have them tackle a longer project, and have the programmers tackle short problems in multiple languages to 'rank' them.

gringomorcego··on CWI cryptanalist discovers new cryptographic attack in Flame spy malware
Yeah, but come on, everyone knows how counterproductive this is.

Flame and Stuxnet have been rumored to have been US/Israeli sponsored for a while; the confirmation is no real surprise.

What surprises me is how stupid this shit is. I mean seriously? If I knew the US was using crypto warfare leveraging the spreading properties of a virus, I would hope that it would be nearly impossible to tie back to us. I mean that's just fucking common sense.

I mean really, at the end of the day, what did this achieve? I'd say it probably just gave every crypto nerd in China, Japan, India and Russia an infinite budget.

gringomorcego··on IE10's 'Do-Not-Track' Default Dies Quick Death
Germany still passes screwed up laws, but in terms of privacy they are leading the charge.

Catching up is a matter of when, not if.

gringomorcego··on Microsoft Bans Linux/Android Dual-Booting on Windows 8 ARM Devices
a patent-pending service as well
gringomorcego··on The Case for Facebook
I think we've entered the world of "state your thesis and conclusion in simple words"

If you can't give a good gist about something in less than a paragraph, you don't know what you're talking about.

gringomorcego··on Dear Startups, Lobster is the new Comic Sans
I spent a minute before clicking that link trying to figure out wtf it meant.

All I could think of was how serving lobster to your employees is considered the new comic sans. An interesting world to think about, if I may say so.

gringomorcego··on Lucid dreaming: Rise of a nocturnal hobby
yeah I thoguht it was bs too for a while.

then I met my boss. holy shit. he lucid dreamed every day. said it was awesome.

just remember, you have to take notes about your dreams if you want to remember them. do it every morning first thing.

2ndly, start asking yourself if you are dreaming a lot during the day. you won't ask yourself in a dream, because you think it's a normal day.

that's my 2 cents.

gringomorcego··on Swift: Scripting Language for Many-Task Computing
I started seizing a bit when I looked at the example code.

I'm sure it's awesome, but friggin come on. There's more to life than algol 2.0.

gringomorcego··on Seriously? Ads?
that's what happens when you don't fight for what you want. they let others rule the nfc area, what the hell did they think was going to happen.
gringomorcego··on Google announces next Chromebooks and a Chromebox (desktop replacement)
default, at least it's true for me to, and I never set anything
gringomorcego··on Stripe open-sources Einhorn
is stripe only available to us customers trying to buy through your site? or only us startups, and all of their customers?
gringomorcego··on With $42M more, 10gen wants to take MongoDB mainstream
hope they get rid of that global write lock first...
gringomorcego··on Pure Go implementation of D. J. Bernstein's cdb constant database library
Okay, semi-related:

Why is the speed of the Go compiler so important? Why not just use an incremental compiler? Why the hell would you want to recompile a 100k+ line program when there are known better alternatives?

Just doesn't make sense to me.

gringomorcego··on Ask HN: What sort of startup talk is allowed at work?
So you don't read HN at work?
gringomorcego··on People are taller in the morning than at night
TIL is over at reddit.
gringomorcego··on Center of gravity in oil world shifts to Americas
very odd to not mention the downsides of fracking. a quarter of the article is about it, and it seems like the crux of the argument of the new dependency on america comes from resources attained through fracking.

very biased reporting.

gringomorcego··on 5 Weeks of Go
I don't get why the compiler speed is such a big deal.

gringomorcego··on Verdict for Google in Oracle's patent infringement case
On a sidenote:

I think most people should be much more questionable about groklaw. I am big open source and FSF advocate, but I'm not above thinking that groklaw is controlled/funded by a much larger power.

I hope it's just a conspiracy theory. But I do think that anonymity works both ways; it can imply that you want to say the truth unencumbered, but it also can imply astroturfing.

Just because the wind blows this way doesn't mean it always will.

gringomorcego··on Firebase (YC S11) Raises $1.1M For Real-Time App Infrastructure
