grimborg··on Erato - simple and beautiful markdown editor
I'd love to see something like the editor in Medium, but implementing the whole markdown and that can run offline.
grimborg··on Erato - simple and beautiful markdown editor
Pretty good!

It's great to be able to run it locally too, so I can run it offline! But how do you open another file when you're offline? (So no dropbox etc)

Replay Games is doing some work there as well. Have you tried Fester Mudd?
grimborg··on If the Earth were 100 pixels wide
Like the advent of nuclear energy!
grimborg··on API Company Mistakes - Serialization Formats
The API should be independent of any serialization format. The serialization layer should take care of it.
grimborg··on PHP is the right tool for the job (for all the wrong reasons)
I disagree. Deploying a Python site, for example, is equally easy.
grimborg··on Ubuntu will switch from X window server to Mir
I tried Mint with Cinnamon a few months ago. I normally use Gnome classic with XMonad as the window manager. Some things that are in Gnome were missing in Cinnamon (bluetooth settings was an example IIRC, but I don't remember the details), and I ended up with a mess of Gnome and Cinnamon, having some apps installed twice (the Cinnamon version and the Gnome version). Other things required some manual work, like integrating Dropbox with Nemo. I ended up going back to Ubuntu.
grimborg··on Ask HN: I'm a 17-year-old with $700. What's the best laptop for me to get?
Second hand x220? I use it as my personal laptop and I love it (ssd, i5, 8Gb of ram)
grimborg··on Ask HN: Which developer laptop should I buy?
X220 here (with SSD), happy with it.
grimborg··on Building a Keyboard: Part 2
Me too! It seems like it's gonna be hard to obtain keycaps and shells, though..
grimborg··on Ask HN: Which DRM-free ebook reader to buy?
I use a rooted PRS-T1, and I use dropsync to sync my ebooks. I did a couple of small hacks, such as removing some buttons that I didn't like and I added two fonts (Caecilia and Garamond). Works quite well with epubs, and it has some dictionaries included in the reading app (being a foreigner trying to learn Dutch, I use the Dutch-English dictionary a lot while reading).
grimborg··on Dear Ed Bott: No, Windows 8 is not the new XP
I bought a ThinkPad recently in Europe, and there was no way for me not to buy Windows. I don't need it and I don't want it. I don't even have it: I wiped the hard disk immediately after getting it. I could choose what memory I wanted, what screen I wanted or how much hard disk I wanted (SSD or regular HDD), but I could not choose not to get Windows. The same is true for the great majority of laptops.

Over the years I've wasted a lot of money buying copies of Windows that I never used and that I never wanted.

I very much doubt that this is so because of convenience: it is so because it gives more money to Microsoft.

It's outrageous.

So, yes, I wish we could get over the Microsoft Tax thing. Call it Microsoft Mandatory Purchase or Microsoft Gratious Gift for Mere Pennies if you wish, it doesn't matter.

Interesting. I use a regular GPS with the maps of OpenFietsMap. It's mostly accurate, and pretty awesome.

I moved from Spain to the Netherlands with almost 0 change. Working on IT helps, of course, but it's still pretty easy. Jump on a plane, register on the city council, there you go.

grimborg··on How To Estimate Properly: What to Steal from Agile
It's fine to estimate in Story Points, but I need to be able to say by when you will be finished, or whether I will be able to complete the tasks by a certain date. How do you do this?
grimborg··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (November 2011)
Good ol' Europe is hiring too! We are in Groningen, Netherlands. We are Paylogic and we sell event tickets in high traffic peaks. We have our own Python app and a growing team of developers.

Here's what the company says:

Paylogic is an extensive Internet application that has to meet the highest standards regarding scalability, availability and security. We always have room for skilled and passionate software developers that want to work with cutting edge Internet technologies in a highly demanding environment and with some of the best Python developers around. Sharing knowledge and having fun are important qualifications of the Paylogic culture!

And here's what I, as an Architect and former developer there, say:

In the dev team we are driven, nonconformist and imaginative. You don't need to be an expert in Python/Django/SQLAlchemy, but the more you know the better.

It's a very nice place to work. Work is interesting, and if you like challenges, you won't be bored. There is no excessive pressure and extra hours are something rare.
