grillvogel··on FDA panel recommends Pfizer's Covid booster doses for people 65 and older
it's really interesting seeing the "follow the science" crowd's reaction to this

somehow they know better than the scientists that they really need these boosters

the original LIVE LAUGH LOVE sign
grillvogel··on Ancient Greek ‘pop culture’ discovery rewrites history of poetry and song
its always seemed strange to me that we just assume something didn't exist before a certain time just because that was the earliest artifact we've found so far.

so much of ancient history which is assumed to be truth is really just based on assumptions and suppositions

grillvogel··on Vaccine experts: Covid-19 booster shots aren't needed now
the pfizer authorization is based on 4 months of data (https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/08/23/does-the-fda-think-thes...)

your 2nd measles vaccine had 25 years of data since your last one, they probably had enough time to know that it would be fine

grillvogel··on Ask HN: Where can you apply for a programming job when you are a Class A asshole
are there actually any tech companies that don't require whiteboard coding interviews?
grillvogel··on Smart kids should skip high school (2015)
smart kids should go to high school and take AP classes and participate in high school activities like Academic Decathlon with like minded peers
grillvogel··on [dead]
feels like this is just becoming a joke at this point
grillvogel··on Partisan attachment: How politics is changing dating and relationships (2020)
it's truly strange. now people define themselves by which corporations are their favorite and which funkopops they own
grillvogel··on Apple banned a pay equity Slack channel
im always impressed and surprised about the things that people at my megacorp are willing to post in public slack channels

F5 load balancers have an absurd amount of features, and can load balance 100Gb traffic flows
grillvogel··on Publication of Hiroshima in the New Yorker (1997)
There's a guy named Joseph Grew, a former US ambassador to japan before WW2 who tried to stop the bombings. Basically he put forth the argument that Japan would be willing to surrender as long as the emperor could keep his title/powers/etc. Truman removed this provision at the last minute, and surprise the surrender was not accepted. In the end we proceeded to use the nukes, and then let the emperor keep his title anyway.

It's interesting that I never heard of him until watching a documentary about this while in Japan.

grillvogel··on The end of phone calls: why young people have silenced their ringtones
that is bizarre to me. i text my family but it is a very different experience compared to catching up over the phone. i usually call my dad every week or 2 to talk for an hour or so. one day you might not be able to hear their voices anymore
grillvogel··on The end of phone calls: why young people have silenced their ringtones
if voice calls were the only option perhaps your ability to deal with them would be stronger? its interesting that with the advent of tech, things that were required for participating in society are now suddenly impossible for so many
grillvogel··on The end of phone calls: why young people have silenced their ringtones
do people really just text their families instead of talking on the phone?
grillvogel··on Why San Francisco’s city government is so dysfunctional
Soylent Green also presents an exaggerated but somewhat plausible view of the cities of the slightly distant future(stepping over piles of homeless people to get out of apartments, not the eating people)
grillvogel··on To Ease Housing Crisis, California Lawmakers Vote to Open Suburbs to Development
the entire premise of the article is literally about how those mean single family home owners prefer to keep single family zoning and how the california government is advancing a bill to go ahead and increase density anyway
grillvogel··on To Ease Housing Crisis, California Lawmakers Vote to Open Suburbs to Development
suburbs typically cost less per sq foot than dense areas. higher density only benefits developers who can now get revenue on the N plots of land they converted from 1.
grillvogel··on To Ease Housing Crisis, California Lawmakers Vote to Open Suburbs to Development
so what you're saying is you don't have an argument. i genuinely have never understood the claim that residents of an area are obligated to change it in order for more people to move there and change their existing quality of life
grillvogel··on An Illustrated Guide to Post-Orwellian Censorship
you can definitely see "Flooding" on all the major social media platforms these days

grillvogel··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
zero covid is unrealistic. how are things gonna pan out when the hypothetical zero covid nation opens up to outside travelers?
grillvogel··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
permanent lockdown should be encouraged because we have the internet and can buy stuff online? sorry but no.
grillvogel··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
also keep in mind that any "children" statistic refers to people anywhere in the range of 0-18
grillvogel··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
"The largest decrease in hesitancy between January and May by education group was in those with a high school education or less. Hesitancy held constant in the most educated group (those with a PhD); by May PhD’s were the most hesitant group. "

grillvogel··on Commonly used idioms in the tech industry
Sure I get it, but these are people i worked with in person until last year. It just feels like with the remote working thing we are transforming from people into interchangeable virtual entities.
grillvogel··on Commonly used idioms in the tech industry
Not an idiom, but the latest dehumanizing thing ive started noticing is referring to people by their slack tags, even in direct messages. Now when my manager has an "ask" for me, instead of a DM with "Hi Name", i get "Hi @jdklsajdls". You don't need to tag me, we're already in a DM. Then, when someone is DMing me and referring to someone else, they use the slack tag instead of their name. Its gotten to the point where people were referring to someone by name on a zoom call and I genuinely didnt remember who that person was. Finally im like ohhhh thats @jkldsajlds

grillvogel··on EU looking into new possible side-effects of mRNA Covid-19 shots
if covid was truly frightening we wouldn't need government mandates forcing people to take it seriously

my wife has a phd in a relevant field, and only just got her first dose last week. she still is not sure if it was a good idea or not.
