greypowerOz··on We didn't encrypt your password, we hashed it
my non-crypto intuition on hashes is that the key idea is that there should only be one hash that matches my password (no collisions i think is the word? )

So naively i understand that a non-salted hash for "password" is a terrible idea, since two peoples hashes for "password" will be the same..

but i still struggle with the practical safety this gives in db breaches where the salt is in the breach..

Troy seems to say that this makes the cracking process slower, which think i see...

but is it fair to think that the KEY ISSUE is the uniqueness of the hashing function for any given input string?

greypowerOz··on Russia’s Covid Vaccine Shows Potential in Peer Review, Lancet Reports
>Between June 18 and Aug 3, 2020, 76 healthy adults were enrolled to the two studies from the volunteer register (figure 1).

>43 adults were selected at the beginning of each study from the volunteer registry; 38 participants were included in each study and five people were kept as backup volunteers in case of dropouts (two for phase 1 and three for phase 2).

>Nine participants in each study received rAd26-S in phase 1, nine received rAd5-S in phase 1, and 20 received sequential injections of rAd26-S (on day 0) and rAd5-S (on day 21) in phase 2. All volunteers in the main group were analysed and additional volunteers from the backup groups were not needed.

>Thus, in each study, 38 volunteers were vaccinated. More men than women took part in the study (table 1).

is it fair to note this is a pretty small sample?

greypowerOz··on Cat sitting on keyboard crashes lightdm

greypowerOz··on A gentle introduction to pointers using C (2019)
as a C noob, this example is humorously confusing...

declare an array, fair enough, makes sense.

Declare a char *pointer,(a "reference to something in memory") ok if you say so.

Assign the char pointer the ARRAY name.... erm, ok.. so ... that would make the char pointer the 'first char in the array' then?

lol no you silly old duffer, it sets the char pointer to the memory address of the first char in the array.. not the contents of that location, obviously ;)

greypowerOz··on New $11 HDMI video capture card outperforms the $280 market leader in 1080p
with respect this yt review of the item talks too long and as best i can see does NOT even test / demo this item? Just (eventually...) talks about a 3rd party review?

https://mobile.twitter.com/Ascii211/status/12686310690514534...

sorry for any bad attitude. just found the yt vid irritatingly slow, repetitive and in the end not even from a user of this device.

if the reviewer is to be believed, we should be investigating Stephen King for a presumed host of past dastardly deeds or at least very serious sociopathic tendencies......

greypowerOz··on SpaceX successfully launches two humans into orbit
during pre launch in-cabin video, one crew member appeared to be "signing" (spelling out stuff) with his left hand (?)

Does anyone have a back story on that?

seriously? David "lizard people" Icke?

good lord, what is this? :)

greypowerOz··on 'I've Got Nothing to Hide' and Other Misunderstandings of Privacy (2007)
apple just posted data showing phone location activity in the context of "shelter in place" breaking up.

google maps shows me live traffic based on phone locations.

IE the war on "personal privacy" has already been lost.

I installed the Australian govt covid tracing app this weekend, since the ability to trace and track new outbreaks is critical to easing lockdown.

Google and apple already know where my phone is. Might as well admit that and use it as a public health tool.

greypowerOz··on Show HN: Understanding the Monty Hall paradox through code
edit oops i should have refreshed before duplicating this thought !!!!

funny how different people grasp things.. this code example didn't really click with me, but someone else explained it by imagining 100 doors, not 3. After you choose one door, 98 of the remaining 99 doors (all with goats behind them..) are opened.... leaving 1.

stay or switch? :)

>Our increasingly decadent mass culture has gradually become more ideological and openly opposed to the values Western civilization is based upon.

wtf?

How does one express disdain for a post here, btw? i don't see a "down arrow"?

greypowerOz··on How to Escape from Immoral Mazes
or, you know.. be the change you want to see.

I'm also cynical enough to think that taking all the "moral people" out of one workplace / school / whatever and forming a "moral maze / company" will still not be a utopia...

People are what they are...

greypowerOz··on Screenshots of the app the caused the Iowa caucus failures
@varun_mathur "deleted my tweet about the #IowaCaucuses app (which was starting to go viral..), and which was based off comments on @BriannaWu’s thread about the app. I believe nobody here knows anything about it and there is rampant misinformation currently"

greypowerOz··on Jimmy Wales has quietly launched a Facebook rival
i joined. First "friend request" i got was from some Bitcoin marketer who had subbed to "every" interest group.... I couldn't see any way to flag this person, report them for spam or otherwise mark them as someone I'm not interested in. I was also spammed by the "new posts in..." for subs i had not joined and have zero interest in getting email from. In short, this feels like something from the good old days when we all thought the internet was a small and friendly town... What the hell were they thinking!

ah the "any" key. I remember that from my helpdesk days.
greypowerOz··on CMS Scanner: Scan Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla websites for security issues
i second this (but also as a learner not a guru) i admin a server where nothing is writable by the user the webserver runs as except manually modified items/folders where the cms is expecting to upload images or pdfs etc. The hand-changed folders are non-executable by php . I'm sure there is a smarter solution but since implementing this we haven't had a successful malware/deface incident .
greypowerOz··on Ask HN: Are any remote desktop solutions good enough for full-time use?
previous licensed teamviewer user here.. got driven away by costs to anydesk.com for remote support, and for a few clients who rdp to work desktops. it works fine for these needs, might be worth evaluating for yours.....
greypowerOz··on A 'self-eating' rocket engine could put satellites in orbit more easily
how would the shrinking "body of the rocket" ie fuel be able to withstand/transfer the thrust/load/accelleration force safely to the rest of the rocket stack?

i mean to say its a 3 to 5-ish G load or something like that, and vibration alone would be...interesting...

greypowerOz··on So, based on the rent thread, I made an own/rent calculator
please excuse stupid question, but isn't it fair to say that at some point the buyer owns an asset, while the renter is still paying 25% or so on their income ?

we paid off our 25 year mortgage 10 years early by adding what we could afford to the required payment eaxh month. If one adopts this strategy early in the repayment life it makes huge savings later..

sorry if this is not addressing the core question :)

nice work!!!

greypowerOz··on The FBI accused him of terrorism. He couldn't tie his shoes
I get that his treatment upsets you and with good reason... however please bear in mind that in his OWN words:

"Peyton said he wanted to "live according to Sharia law." When asked to describe what that meant, he could only remember the rules that "non-Muslims must pay a tax to live in an Islamic land" and "that homosexual people are killed." He claimed to have read "eight chapters" of the Quran, but "I don't got any of it memorized."

So we have his own confirmation that he has a radicalised view of the world, agrees with some of the worst aspects of ISIS/radical islam, and lives in a country where access to deadly force is a constitutional right.

If the US authorities failed to act on this they would be held accountable for anything this troubled and damaged young man did.

So lets not rush to condemn the authorities here.... that's all I'm saying...
