My homepage is https://gregstoll.com - I have a bunch of random side projects there.

gregstoll··on Google admitting defeat in 'direct to consumer' model phone sales
An ETF is an Early Termination Fee, which you have to pay if you leave your contract early. It protects the carriers since they're subsidizing your phone.
gregstoll··on HP Buying Palm For $1.2 Billion
Very good news for WebOS since HP doesn't have their own competing mobile OS.
gregstoll··on [dead]
Interesting, but I'm doubtful that the Justice Department or FCC are going to regulate an ad network that only runs on a particular (albeit a very popular) kind of phone.
gregstoll··on Project Ares Open Beta (IDE for writing Mojo apps for WebOS)
As someone whose written a few WebOS apps, this shows great promise - building UIs is much easier than doing it by hand. Looking forward to trying it at home where I have the emulator installed!
gregstoll··on Hacker News full of Erlang articles
I'm guessing the submitter is making a suggestion to deal with the _why/Zed Shaw articles.
gregstoll··on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion
Damn Interesting had a piece on this a while ago: http://www.damninteresting.com/this-place-is-not-a-place-of-...
gregstoll··on Apple disables iTunes on Palm Pre
Honestly, this is no big surprise. I can definitely see the benefit for Palm providing syncing support, but if they thought it was going to last very long they were only fooling themselves.
gregstoll··on Use the same password on multiple sites safely
I wrote an extension similar to this at http://gregstoll.dyndns.org/~gregstoll/passwordhash/ but for some reason I'm hesitant about changing over to this scheme.
gregstoll··on Ask HN: Do you have any code or projects of your own you would like to talk about instead?
I'm working on an interactive US map using canvas. See http://gregstoll.dyndns.org/marriagemap/
gregstoll··on R graph gallery (with code)
Wow - I just started playing with R a few weeks ago and this is a great resource. Browsing for a neat-looking graph and being able to see the source is awesome!
gregstoll··on Basketball Stats: They all maximize what they think they’re being paid for
It seems like you should be able to quantify defense by keeping track of the points scored by the guy you're covering...

Glad to see my hometown team developing new basketball statistics :-)

gregstoll··on Rice professor sees probabilistic method revolutionizing computing
Or just do everything twice - if it really runs seven times faster than "today's best technology" than it shouldn't be an issue.

It's a very interesting idea...wish they had more details in the article.

gregstoll··on Ask HN: Rate my webapp: commandlinefu.com
Very neat - I like the "Commands using <whatever>" feature.

The "Popular functions" box on the right has some command names running together ("perl" and "ping", "uname" and "uniq") for me on Firefox 3.1b2 on Windows.

gregstoll··on ClickToFlash - WebKit/Safari plug-in to prevent automatic loading of Flash content
The Firefox equivalent is Flashblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433) which I can't live without!
gregstoll··on Ask HN: When do you code?
My good zones are 2-5pm and 9-11pm. I try to fill the other parts of the work day with administrative stuff or studying existing code, when possible.
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
Ah, tracked down the problem - it was related to a last minute URL change I made. It should work now, sorry!
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at it sometime soon...
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
That's weird - are you still seeing this?
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
OK - now zip should function as a postcode as well. (characters permitted, up to length 10)
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
I tried to distinguish by adding good tag and filtering capabilities, eg. looking for a place that serves asian food that takes less than 10 minutes.
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
That's the problem - all the restaurants on the site were entered manually by me (and my friends).

Taking a quick look at the Yelp API TOS, it looks like you might be able to use their data. (but of course I'm not a lawyer)

gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
Sorry about that! Good, clear domain names are a little hard to come by. I probably should have thought of a more clever name...
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
Yeah, the big problem is where to pull data from legally. I'm definitely open to suggestions!

Went ahead and added NYC as a city.

gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
I went ahead and added a location for Cambridge - let me know if you're able to add locations or not, since I haven't tested the geocoding in the UK...
gregstoll··on Ask HN: review my app whereslunch.org
Thanks!

I'll see what I can do - sadly the database schema is somewhat tied to the US right now, but as long as Google or Yahoo geocoding works over there it shouldn't be too bad...

gregstoll··on The 37signals Effect
This is kinda typical of the whole "be successful like I was by doing exactly what I did!" genre of books, etc. Of course, we don't usually hear from the 99% of people who did the exact same thing but didn't succeed because of luck or whatever. I try to take such advice with a huge grain of salt - 37signals's philosophy is certainly interesting but it's certainly no panacea.
gregstoll··on Ask YC: Review my startup, Userfly
The screencast is great - I might use this for a project I'm working on. The demo is very useful as well to see exactly what it does and doesn't capture (selecting text).

In the pricing table, does "users per hour" mean the number of sessions that are captured? That's what I took it to mean but I'm not sure.

You should probably put some answers to your FAQs :-)

gregstoll··on Taking naps boosts memory and creativity
It's a shame naps aren't commonly seen as a productivity enhancer (here in the US, anyway) - there have been quite a few days where just a 20 minute nap would probably have helped me focus for the rest of the afternoon.
gregstoll··on Lost scenes of "Metropolis" rediscovered
Coincidentally, I just saw this a few days ago for the first time. Definitely worth a Netflix/Blockbuster/whatever if you haven't seen it - the story is surprisingly complex for a 1920's movie.
gregstoll··on Why should I pay for this AWS design decision?
This does seem a little unfair, but I'm not sure what the alternative is, since it does cost resources to check if the queue is empty.
