gregshap··on I failed three job applications, here's what I learned
Don't know about Canada. In the US employers rarely (but not never) attempt to enforce when someone is laid off or fired not-for-cause.
gregshap··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
I think it's helpful to emphasize that "Visibility Filtering" and "Shadow Banning" since they are functionally the same thing, but seem to have very different connotations depending on whether the speaker considers the action to be merited. As many on this forum know, one of the oldest and best ways to limit spam or other unwanted user behavior is to hide the content without informing the user, in order to slow down the arms race between bad actors and moderators.
gregshap··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
VF = Visibility Filtering = "Shadow Banning"
gregshap··on New Zealand bans young people from buying cigarettes for life
Agree, even more reason to discount the "taxpayers are paying for smokers choices" reaction
gregshap··on New Zealand bans young people from buying cigarettes for life
The healthcare cost impact is more complicated. Smokers consume more healthcare at any given age, but die earlier and cost less in healthcare in their lifetime. At the national level the lifetime costs and aging population impact are arguably more important than single year costs.

gregshap··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
In the last four quarters FB's reported profit went from $10B to $7.5B to $6B to $4B. The business is threatened.
gregshap··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Sure but when twitter users complain about bots they are complaining about content quality, not keyboard input methods.
gregshap··on Justice Department announces takedown of catalytic converter theft ring
can confirm 2 and 3 in my area
gregshap··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Lots of the “bots” are people. The solution is to show high quality content and suppress low quality content, regardless of input.
gregshap··on NYU Chemistry Professor Fired After Students Said His Class Was Too Hard
I always loved the classes that had at least a couple of exams like that
gregshap··on Ask HN: How to ask employer to match inflation rate, independent of pay rise
As a strong performer you'll generally do much better if you negotiate based on market rates.

How much more would you get paid by another employer? How much more would your current employer have to pay to backfill your role?

If you want to signal loyalty, phrase it as "I really like what I'm doing here but it's distracting to know that I may be giving up a XX%-YY% pay difference"

If your employer can actually fill your position without paying 20+% more or losing several months of ramp up, maybe you are being paid well regardless of the year over year CPI.

gregshap··on Amazon workers on Staten Island vote to unionize
It’s a last-mile facility for service to NYC.
gregshap··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
Tax credits are dollar for dollar reduction in taxes owed. There's no reason to apply a marginal tax rate.
gregshap··on CIA black site detainee served as training prop to teach torture techniques
Even if morally acceptable, the torture should still be highly illegal. Like any citizen, the interrogator can make their own moral analysis of whether the crime and their own punishment are worth it. Anyone allowing or covering up the torture is equally guilty. If a firefighter can give their life to save one other, the interrogator can choose to give theirs.
gregshap··on Peloton Q1 FY22 Results
2022Q1 Actuals seem to be reported, which would seem impossible to know in November 2021
gregshap··on Nearly a third of new code on GitHub is written with AI help
Thanks for sharing. So in other words it's the journalism that is wrong.
gregshap··on Investing in Startups by Passing the Series 65
Ha, didn't read that part. I wanted to attest to the experience of being a low budget student in a high cost-of-living city. The author might not necessarily be that!
gregshap··on Investing in Startups by Passing the Series 65
Investing in startups generally requires being an accredited investor. To be an accredited investor they need to pass the Series 65 test and get licensed. Licensing can be state or federal, but federal is generally more convenient. Federal registration usually requires significant assets under management which the author certainly doesn't have, but the "internet adviser exemption" allows them to register federally (SEC) without the $ minimum.
gregshap··on Investing in Startups by Passing the Series 65
The author said they were in college. In their defense its not uncommon to have loans or parent funding for the expensive apartment, but limited discretionary income and limited ability get money from the 'college' bucket to the discretionary bucket.
gregshap··on Pentagon cancels $10B cloud contract that Amazon, Microsoft were fighting over
GCP runs on Google, Google doesn’t run on GCP.
gregshap··on The Electrification of Everything
Will it? Certainly in my part of the country most structures cannot go off-grid on solar alone, even with significant storage. Hard to make it up on volume.
gregshap··on DARPA Awards Moderna a Grant for Up to $25M to Develop mRNA Therapeutics (2013)
Grants encourage early R&D, Purchasing Commitments encourage Product Development and Capital Investments. We can do more of both.
gregshap··on “My Octopus Teacher” defied convention
Also frowned upon when done to humans, but accepted by most humans in regard to animals: slavery, raising for food, taxidermy, hunting for sport, neutering and keeping as pets, etc.

Some people don't think this treatment is appropriate for non-human animals either.

Personally I eat other animals, but I'm against both eugenics and cannibalism.

gregshap··on The Whole Web Pays for Google and Facebook to Be Free
I would pay more for a subset of the current NYT. The website is full of imo prominently displayed clickbait that I consider negative value.

I'm a previous subscriber of NYT and Bloomberg online. I've kept my WSJ subscription partly because its easier to consume only the useful content.

I also subscribe to a couple of email lists where the author absolutely provides value in their niche over and above the larger newsrooms. They are usually great complements to each other and it tells you something that the journalists are also reading the newsletters.

gregshap··on “The Big Shift”: Internal Facebook Memo Tells Employees to Do Better on Privacy
Good chance to show they are serious by doing a Big Shift on requiring active Facebook account data for me to play Oculus ping pong against my socially distanced family members.

gregshap··on Building a $400 at-home DIY spin bike for Peloton and Apple Fitness+
Because the customer for Peloton has very little overlap with the customer for indoor cycling trainer.

There are tens of millions of people in USA alone with zero desire to bike outside, who nonetheless desire some exercise experience that requires minimal knowledge or planning outside of class time.

gregshap··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
From the linked article: "Moderna said it could potentially manufacture 1bn doses by the end of 2021, adding to a further 1.3bn from Pfizer/BioNTech in the same timeframe."

Given the timelines and uncertainty, I don't think 1B and 1.3B are materially different. Both require 2 doses per vaccination.
