gregrata··on Facebook is down
Very cool! Can't remember the last time it's just DOWN (which is saying a lot for how good FB is able to keep things up!)
gregrata··on Interviewing SUCKS
You'd think people would get that, but the white-board algo interviews continue on.
gregrata··on Media blog Techdirt fights for its life in frivolous lawsuit
"Did Ayyadurai really invent email? He claims to have created the idea — literally calling his product EMAIL — as a teenager in New Jersey in 1980. However, as this detailed site explains, there have been a number of versions of email since the early days of the internet and ARPANET. Queen Elizabeth II of England sent her first email in 1976 and Jimmy Carter used email that same year for internal communications. In short, the claim is ridiculous."

Very cool! Thanks for the info!!
gregrata··on Nootropics
A summary would be awesome - I appreciate the amount of work and details that went into this, but a list of what worked and didn't would be a great start - interested readers could then dive into details
gregrata··on On Being a Black Man
shrug I guess you could say the same thing to the original author (it's just in your head). If you lived in a place that is 80% black, at least in the south, and have not run into a black person that is not very racist towards white people, then I'm not sure what to tell you - this wasn't really a "feeling"; it's what people said and how they acted towards me vs others. I actually get WHY as how THEY are treated by some white people, not that it makes it ok.
gregrata··on On Being a Black Man
Great piece.

One thing I find interesting is, as white guy, I've had very similar experiences when living in the US south. I would often be the only white guy in a store or on the street in certain areas - and felt like I didn't belong or fit in, and was treated differently. I got used to it over time, but it was still there.

I don't at all equate my experience to how difficult it can be in the US to be a black person - MOST of the places I go that aren't in certain parts of the south are mostly white (I think the US is something like 70% white?) - it's horrible the prejudices non-white, and especially black, can encounter in the US.

I DO wonder if, whenever an area is mostly one race, that if someone is not of that race encounters the same kind of thing.

Great read! "Thanks" for all the Wikipedia links - I ended up wasting a few hours reading more details
gregrata··on Fixing the Inequity of Startup Equity
While this would be great, I'd personally like to see the tax code change - being taxed on the "value" of something you can't realize, and my NEVER realize, is crazy.

Most of the time I've been at a startup as a founder/early employee, the strike price was low enough that I'd be willing to take a roll of the dice and just exercise, if I was going to leave. It's usually 10's of thousands of dollars.

By the time I started vesting a fair amount, the TAX on that was non-trivial - 100's of thousands if not more. Something I personally can't really do.

gregrata··on Attention Shoppers: Internet Is Open (1994)
"Experts have long seen such iron-clad security as a necessary first step before commercial transactions can become common on the Internet, the global computer network." - "Even if the N.S.A. was listening in, they couldn't get his credit card number"

Huh. Guess this necessity didn't really pan out. Yeah, need to at least feel somewhat secure giving a CC - but, with all the government snooping and massive data hacks that have going on, I wouldn't call it "Iron Clad". Yet will still shop on-line

gregrata··on Tech industry's persistent claim of worker shortage may be phony
... "may be phony"

Oh LOL, isn't this well known? Are people really just now figuring out NOW that this is, and always has been, about lowering expenses for these big companies? I mean, they aren't really even trying to hide this!

"our immigration system has failed to keep pace." The nation's outdated limits and "convoluted green-card process," she said, had left firms like hers "hampered in hiring the talent that they need."" ... "Only a few weeks after her June 2 talk, the San Diego company announced that it would cut its workforce, of whom two-thirds are engineers, by 15%, or nearly 5,000 people"

gregrata··on Cuba's “Internet” is a thumb drive that moves by bus
Wow. Fred Fish and his Fish Disks! Haven't thought of that for years. Used to love them - a huge amount of my Amiga software in the mid to late 80's came from them.

The disks: ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/amiga/fish/

... and now really sad to hear that he's not with us any more.

gregrata··on Why can’t we read anymore?
I've found the opposite, if you'll allow that eBooks are real books. To me, it's a golden age of books - with self publishing and eBooks, there are more books coming out ever day than ever before. I personally read AT LEAST two books a week (usually not technical - I enjoy sci-fi). I've always been a avid reader, but generally had to re-read a lot (I have about 5k physical books, to support that habit). Theses days, I'm ALWAYS reading new books. The selection is amazing, a lot of the books are very good!
gregrata··on Why can’t we read anymore?
Agreed! Have to be careful with the "we". I read a couple of books a week.

gregrata··on If you have startup stock options, check your option plan
> buy them as early as you can,

Careful on this one - when you buy, it's a taxable event. The spread between what the IRS thinks the company is worth and what you paid is taxable. You have to pay that NOW.

I've known people that were screwed on this - strike price was around 1, value by IRS was 8 (based on funding rounds). By the time the person could sell the stock, it as worth .013. Fun!

"typed by intercepting side-channel signals produced by the first laptop’s keyboard software, which had been modified to make the characters easier to identify."

So they modified the keyboard to make it easy to detect what was typed? Not saying side-channel isn't a issue, but that's kinda silly :)

gregrata··on Mark Cuban on How to Fix the U.S. Economy

gregrata··on Social Media and the ‘Spiral of Silence’
Well said! I think this wasn't the greatest selection, as the subject is about NSA snooping and its dragnet. I personally have become very reluctant to talk about any of stuff on anything electronic - gawd knows what the NSA is pickuping, and how it will some day be used against me.

Hmmm... I probably should just delete this post....

gregrata··on So Long, and Thanks for All the Checkins
LOL

I should really just move contacts to the bottom. I don't use my iPhone as a phone very often (mostly use it to listen to voicemail). I DO bring up contacts more often, to get addresses, notes, etc - so like being about to just go directly to contacts, instead of opening up the phone and clicking on contacts.

gregrata··on So Long, and Thanks for All the Checkins
A really sad, odd thing for them to do - I guess they realized they were never going to make money at the old app, and decided to do the new? Wonder how that is going to go, if they lose their user base (that they are replying on to generate new content).

gregrata··on How the U.S. government poisoned alcohol during Prohibition (2010)
While I get what you are saying.... this was done knowing what the results were going to be - done specifically to get the results (dangerously poisoning people who's behaviour was determined to not be moral)

So yeah - I do believe the guilty party are those that knowly made something that was going to poison and kill people.

On the "alcohol" is poison argument (WTF?) Fine - it turned from a known poison with known, acceptable results to something that that wasn't known and killed people.
