gregorkas··on SynthID: A tool to watermark and identify content generated through AI
I genuinely feel that in this AI world we need the inverse. That every analogue or digital photo taken by traditional means of photography will need to be signed by a certificate, so anyone can verify its authenticity.
gregorkas··on Examples of Great URL Design (2023)
... and the classic Penisland: https://www.penisland.net/
gregorkas··on And There Was Digitron
This is cool to see. I'm from the area (although a different country), but when I was little, my father often said, 'fetch me the digitron,' referring to a pocket calculator. It was only after many years that I realized it's an actual company.
gregorkas··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2022 – Show and tell
Monthly recurring revenue.
gregorkas··on MS Paint IDE
It allows you to select a region of the screen, then copies it to your clipboard, so you can easily paste it to other programs. It’s the best workflow there is because it requires no other running tools, and the binding is even simpler than ctrl+cmd+shift+4 on MacOS.
gregorkas··on After 37 years, Voyager has fired up its trajectory thrusters
I imagine that with cracking the protocol with 39 hours return time... it would be a challenge.
gregorkas··on Ask HN: Resources to learn blockchain and smart contracts?
cliché
gregorkas··on Quick, Draw
Yes, they state it on the website as well: "See how well it does with your drawings and help teach it, just by playing."
gregorkas··on Pokemon Go is a huge security risk
On Android 6.0 I got the correct permissions dialog and I was able to select what the app sees and what it can do. Is this just me?
gregorkas··on 85 percent of Facebook video is watched without sound
Sounds like they could optimise the costs by encoding two versions of the video - one without the sound that would play by default, and the other when you click on the actual video.

The CDN invoice probably isn't the smallest of sums you can imagine :).

gregorkas··on Artem vs. Predator
You know those black and white photos? I thought Russia looked like that with regular cameras :P.

Just kidding, this has to be one of the coolest projects I've ever seen. To make all this by yourself is just ... awesome.

gregorkas··on Google Cardboard Plastic
This is hilarious, well done Google :).
gregorkas··on Require-from-Twitter
This is brilliant :).
gregorkas··on Screenhero has joined Slack
A possible [January 2015] tag could be added here, because it happened a while ago. I can't wait for the integration to be released, though. Then we can finally ditch skype for good.
gregorkas··on White Coke
Reminds me of Nuka-Cola. :)
gregorkas··on Tamagothi (1997)
You should try My Talking Tom - http://talkingtomandfriends.com/tom/. (links to stores in the link). If you're more keen on female cats, there's also My Talking Angela (or other virtual pets from the series). Check it out, it's really well made and tons of fun ;).
gregorkas··on Wi-Fi under threat from ‘100 times faster’, more secure Li-Fi
"The technology also promises to be more secure than ordinary Wi-Fi as the light is unable to travel through walls, meaning that connections are more secure and there is less interference between devices."

I don't understand how there could be "less interference" between devices.. Ok I get the transfer range, but how about particles in the air, birds, etc? Wouldn't packet loss be an issue here if something interrupts the stream? Unless you had multiple transmitters repeating the data...

gregorkas··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2015)

gregorkas··on A Little Guide on Using Concurrent Futures for Web Developers
I imagine that Futures are something like JavaScript Promises. I just thought I should mention this because "Web Developers" was mentioned in the title, but the topic itself is Scala oriented. Nothing wrong with this, but it could mention Scala in the title.
gregorkas··on Is it possible to learn programming?
Please always remember that you can learn anything you want. All it takes is some blood, sweat, and tears.
gregorkas··on The man who brought us the lithium-ion battery has an idea for a new one
But.. the one we had was Goodenough.. yeahhhhh
gregorkas··on Google taught us how to build real tech. Facebook taught us how to copy myspace
What does your title have to do with the actual article? Facebook copying myspace? What?
gregorkas··on Is Capturing Carbon from the Air Practical?
But if we build awesome factories that will gradually reduce the global CO2 levels, they will be useless when they do their job too good. :)
gregorkas··on Blink
I just had to try marquee :D

gregorkas··on Spire – next generation wearable for activity, breath and mind
I think it's a bit bulky to wear behind a belt like that, but it's a cool idea to track breathing patterns.
gregorkas··on Scientists discover how to turn light into matter after 80-year quest
1. grab a flashlight 2. make your friend grab a flash light 3. turn them on and point them at each other 4. make it rain
gregorkas··on Would you use JavaScript compiled to C for your server applications
What about nodejs? Do you think the performance would be better with javascript compiled to c?
gregorkas··on Ask HN: Moving off of Google products
I don't think you should actually replace all the products, just make sure you're not signed in with any of the google's products and you'll be fine.
gregorkas··on [dead]
We all know that's not your Facebook profile. Now turn off the computer and go outside before you do yourself any harm.
gregorkas··on Doc Brown and Tony Hawk show off a real-life hoverboard (or not)
Or not. If this technology existed nobody would comment on hacker news because we would all be riding our levitating boards all the time.
