gregdaniels421··on Anime User Interfaces
Lol anyone can post 50 pictures and post it, most are not of UIs. Maybe aim higher and ask more of people.
gregdaniels421··on We accidentally built an LLVM compiler for Jax
Indeed, I am an outgroup member. look at me the dumbfuck. Now how does one become an ingroup member, by learning.

I am an active contributer to MLIR, if you knew my name and you weren't some weirdo, you could know me. This is a pseudonym account of which I have several, since I grew up in an age where you hid your identity. Now how XLA interacts with that I have no clue dude. Maybe help with that and don't be a low effort dick.

gregdaniels421··on Ask HN: Do Something about Bots
I don't doubt it, and that super isn't what people want here.

Is this just an Ad for a tablet?
gregdaniels421··on RFC 9987: Secure Shell (SSH) Agent Protocol
Oof, super ugly, doesn't map well to actual agent use, not a fan
gregdaniels421··on Why Is Europe Burning?
Totally agree, the issue is what does anyone DO?
gregdaniels421··on We accidentally built an LLVM compiler for Jax
I can't tell what you mean by this comment. Is XLA good? is XLA bad, cuz it doesn't use MLIR? Speak loud, for we are hard of hearing.
gregdaniels421··on Why Is Europe Burning?
Indeed buddy, what is the point? the GP noted the corruption, you also have issue with corruption. The current admin(in the US) thinks corruption is legal. So why split hairs?
gregdaniels421··on Persistent State Machines: LLM Attention with INT4 In-Memory Cells
I thought maybe this was hyperbolic, but it is pretty accurate, whoever/whatever wrote that doesn't understand much.

> Lots of classics here

Are there? there is one evangelion one, almost no actual classics. I have no idea who is liking this, or why.

gregdaniels421··on Anime User Interfaces
There is one with a screen flashing on some dudes, I waited 15 secs. No UI https://64.media.tumblr.com/e9ddbc48b17353046fa5ac73cfc289ef...

and more, come on man

gregdaniels421··on Anime User Interfaces
It is maybe 60 pictures, and a decent chunk of them have absolutely no focus on UI.
gregdaniels421··on The Art of 64-bit Assembly
> if you want to learn about ASM in TYOOL 2026 then you could do a lot worse than learning it from someone who doesn't trust compilers and does everything themselves.

Not bad advice, but the Fasm forums used to be pretty good for asking questions, no clue if they are around and active still, but there were a lot of programs people had written and even a few simple OSs(including KolibriOS) which had a ton of code to read through that mostly was commented. Once you get the basics it is pretty easy to do stuff, and most of learning is doing stuff.

gregdaniels421··on The Art of 64-bit Assembly
His earlier 32bit book was pretty decent, but super windows focused, I wish a similar work using a reasonable syntax existed for Linux, but the linux equivalent(some kind of foundations of programming or something similar assembly book) used gas syntax which is like nails on a chalkboard. Fasm is also so much nicer these days to use(masm is neglected by microsoft, but is the tool the author has used for everything).
gregdaniels421··on Structure Editors
I have tried an editor that worked on ASTs only, and it was super unergonomic, like select a node type, then fill in values, but writing the code was way faster than the interface. Even writing LISP which I find hard is easier than using that AST editor. like (+ 1 2) is faster than right click add node add op add literal add literal
gregdaniels421··on NetBSD 11.0
Ages ago I know someone did the work to get wine running on a then modern NetBSD, has that effort been kept up, and can it run reasonable programs? Ideally someone has tried it with some success, I am hoping to try running NetBSD on an old thinkpad, but I need some software for a SDR dongle that was only written for Windows, and works great under Wine on linux.
gregdaniels421··on Study uncovers lost 'golden age' of languages
If there are 80 speaker/readers, how could a language get popular again? By interested readers of a translation?
gregdaniels421··on June in Servo: real world compat, media queries, SharedWorker, and more
> like that overengineered bloatware regex

I don't know what that would mean in this context. Did you mean the js stdlib regex implementation? Any help?

gregdaniels421··on Study uncovers lost 'golden age' of languages
> political currents don’t have to move in one direction. It’s not inevitable that endangered languages become extinct.

There really isn't any good incentive to learn a language with very few speakers, since unless you already know a speaker, you really can't practice the real language. People were a few years ago at least hoping llms could help preserve the languages, but more most of them, there just aren't enough samples for any real preservation. I knew some dudes in college that were linguists that worked on recording native speakers of endangered languages, and while I hoped they would succeed, I never really had much hope of it working.

gregdaniels421··on Detect Dark Matter's Mark from Your Backyard
It is nice that it seems doable for ~$200 USD, but the results aren't super encouraging, anyone know of a setup to get better results in a backyard setting?
gregdaniels421··on DConf 2026 in London
> point at betterC which remains half-assed for about a decade now (search my blog archives, here's one with them talking about "A betterC standard library" from December 2016 - https://arsdnet.net/this-week-in-d/2016-dec-18.html - and none of that has materialized ).

Oof, yeah that is definitely a pain point. Not to get too personal, but why would you continue to invest so much time in the language if upstream isn't accommodating?

Has WalterBright had any comments on this? He usually is so vocal, any hope of a remerge of the OpenD changes in to CanonD?

Anyway, I appreciate you trying to advance Dlang, I fight for it all the time at work, and usually get to do stuff in it(I am old and have privileges).

gregdaniels421··on DConf 2026 in London
> I would classify D's scope exit/failure/success as RAII actually, even if D uses a GC.

It has better than that, but it is a bit clunky compared with C++(just use struct instead of class). You can have proper destructors, but if you have a container you need to be more careful than in C++.

In D exceptions are the default like in C++ and you have to opt out with nothrow or extern(C) or betterC.

Really try some D code in a bigger situation it is 90% good and almost worth using over C++, but if you can't have GC it is a huge pain, but better than C.

gregdaniels421··on Internet is no longer accessible?
It is part of what seems like a loosely coordinated effort to get verified platforms to be standard. Like device attestation so we can be more easily surveilled.

One odd thing with cloudflare is most sites are fine, and I click the box, but for some reason I go to some sites and they claim I have been blocked for bot like activity, which seems weird since it should be the same filter from the same provider.

gregdaniels421··on The Artist Who Colored Ghibli
> As a grown man, you'd be hard-pressed to get me to watch a cartoon about a young witch if it were made by any other studio. But Ghibli has the magic that makes it delightful for everyone.

That is very true for any Ghibli film which I think is a product of taking the child characters seriously and not like they have to be silly, things around them are silly, but they are serious.

gregdaniels421··on RTX 2080 Ti Memory Upgrade to 22 GB
You mean, that if I could have used this service, it would have been a scam and that such scams are common in the UAE, so in the future people should avoid repair companies in the UAE regardless of the specific vendor?

That seems a bit of a stretch, but I have never dealt with the UAE, is this a real thing that people know about?

gregdaniels421··on Three Theses on the Literacy Crisis
> Who the heck is reading The Republic word for word in their dorm in between all the other classes and activities and the other stuff assigned by the same Prof

I think this comment says more about you than actual students who care. I did all the readings, even the extra ones. So did all the people in my study group for the class. Maybe select for more studious friends.

gregdaniels421··on C/C++ projects packaged for Zig
Didn't say I didn't understand it, I just said it was less explicit. Read through the Zig and it is super clear what every step is doing, and it sets things much more explicitly than the meson build

``` const wayland_version_header = b.addConfigHeader(.{ .style = .{ .cmake = upstream.path("src/wayland-version.h.in") }, }, .{ .WAYLAND_VERSION_MAJOR = @as(i64, @intCast(version.major)), .WAYLAND_VERSION_MINOR = @as(i64, @intCast(version.minor)), .WAYLAND_VERSION_MICRO = @as(i64, @intCast(version.patch)), .WAYLAND_VERSION = b.fmt("{f}", .{version}), });
```

which is doing some config automake work. Which Meson does implicitly(magically).

gregdaniels421··on DConf 2026 in London
What exactly is the openD Canon D split about, and as a regular person, which one should I use? Any other details you could give, or background? I haven't followed any of that and have no clue.
gregdaniels421··on C/C++ projects packaged for Zig
The Zig is far more explicit about what it is doing with lots of very long dotted commands for specifiy version headers and such, so maybe not super fair unless you like magic.
gregdaniels421··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
The article implies it was from sharing his experience using Ketamine therapy for depression, which likely would have been done with a doctor. Which makes this seem much weirder to my ears.
