greenonions··on Upward Farms throws in towel ten years after founding vertical-farming business
Does the traditional monoculture acres include the acres for fertilizer, the production of all of the equipment needed, fuel, seed, equipment and fuel for transport to final location, storage, pesticides, insecticides, and water?

I agree that intensive agriculture is needed, but it's not so easy to compare the two.

greenonions··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
I'm really hopeful that Netflix implements password policing in the US, so that I have an excuse to stop paying for my in-laws to use it.
greenonions··on Show HN: Homemade rocketship treehouse – hardware to custom OS
You could probably have this travel around to children's museums and make a space themed event out of it.
greenonions··on It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop
I know that it will never be aliens, but it's really really fun to imagine it being aliens.
greenonions··on Reintroducing bison on tallgrass prairie doubles plant diversity: research
I don't know much about the topic, but my understand was that bison graze more selectively, and have behaviors where they roll in grass, creating dirt ruts, which provides habitat for insects etc.

Bison are far more unruly though, so you need serious fencing to keep them contained, so it's less practical. I think they are lower maintenance than cattle, but bison just doesn't have the market.

greenonions··on Toyota chief says ‘silent majority’ has doubts about pursuing only EVs
I'm naive about this topic, but I think other factors to consider are the manufacturing and maintenance. A PHEV just can't be as efficient to manufacture as a BEV. This is particularly true as investment dollars follow the money into batteries and the ICE supplier chain grows tighter. Then, once you've got it, you still need to maintain it like an ICE, even though you'd rather just use the battery.

That being said, I think PHEVs are great, but I think consumers and producers both see greater benefits moving to full BEV.

Edit: grammar

greenonions··on A software change allowed FTX to use client money
Genius, but it has to be a bug that you haven't knowingly prevented before, otherwise it'd be suspicious.
greenonions··on Gender and Age Differences in Love Styles and Attitudes
My wife and I read the book on love languages just prior to getting married. I don't think it's a scientific fact or anything, more like a well thought out linguistic tool for discussing feelings.

It simplified the process of learning each other's needs and communicating, and through time we've gotten better. I'd recommend it to anyone.

greenonions··on Gender and Age Differences in Love Styles and Attitudes
It's true that people don't have any idea about themselves, but I'm very skeptical you would get any better data by asking a different sex.

Just as much as people don't know themselves, they often know even less about others.

greenonions··on Super apps are proliferating across emerging markets
You're forgetting that Facebook can see the future and everyone is wearing helmets and gloves and living in a digital world that looks like a mobile game from 2008.
greenonions··on Victorian Hacker News
A treatise on the most prevalent falsehoods, commonly held as truths by mechanical instructioners, on the topic of historical reenactment.
greenonions··on American chestnut tree in Centreville is the 'holy grail' for conservationists
Not certain, but that Dunstan is likely a hybrid species of American with Chinese chestnut for blight resistance.

The genetically pure American Chestnut tree was nearly eliminated by this blight. So backcrossed hybrids and genetically modified varieties of the American Chestnut are exciting, because there's a hope they could return to their former glory in the ecosystem.

This particular tree is a large specimen of genetically pure American Chestnut, growing in the east coast region as well, so a great find for conservation.

In all, hybrids may be great for individuals, but this movement intends to be more selective for restoration purposes.

greenonions··on American chestnut tree in Centreville is the 'holy grail' for conservationists
Why stop at trees? I imagine you could do an alternate reality app for landscaping that shows you what your landscape "could look like". Including flower beds, ground cover alternatives to grass, etc.
greenonions··on American chestnut tree in Centreville is the 'holy grail' for conservationists
Saw that video recently as well. What's remarkable about this find is the size of the specimen, and that it's confirmed to be 100% American Chestnut. Hopefully with the hybrid approach, this find, and further breeding/propagation work, we can see a large scale return of this incredible species.

Big fan of crime pays but botany doesn't. I'll need to give that podcast a listen, thanks!
greenonions··on The coming tsunami of fakery
The weaponization has already started, and will just get worse. I wonder if we will need a sort of antidote ai, which generates fake content according to our values.

That is, it dramatically widens the impact of thoughtful, kind, caring, just, understanding, forgiving, etc. content, to counteract.

greenonions··on Is it classist to be against fast fashion?
How will the pundits/influencers/grifters have anything to talk about? Think about the damage to the economy with such reasonable dialogue.
greenonions··on Why does anything exist?
Mushroom origins or no, I completely agree.
greenonions··on Repurposing the cadaver of a spider to create a pneumatically actuated gripper
I always imagined that early humans had fun rolling big rocks or logs down hills (who wouldn't?) and someone got clever.
greenonions··on Arizona Mom Fights Abusive Prosecution by Department of Child Safety
Americans? Varnishing neuroticism? Couldn't be.
greenonions··on Battery cost declines raise prospects of all-electric container shipping
If the automation is there, is there a reason why more container ships at least partially utilize wind for locomotion? Is it just that retrofitting a giant sail isn't feasible onto existing ships?
greenonions··on Sleeping longer than 6.5 hours/day can help you lose weight: study

greenonions··on Why developers seem to only build luxury housing (2018)
Also capital efficiency. If you have limited labor anyway, why bother with lower margin additions and remodels?
greenonions··on ‘Mind blowing’ ancient settlements uncovered in the Amazon
I don't really think of Graham Hancock as being a very good scientific source, but I think his ideas are a fantastic source of wonder about human history. It's simply fun to imagine advanced ancient civilizations.
greenonions··on Milk alternatives produce up to 4.5x less greenhouse gas emissions as milk
Soy milk is hundreds of years old. I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that the hormone drop is caused by soy milk. American bison digest far better than cows and don't produce methane. What is natural about millions of cows in factories producing milk? Additionally these cows are being fed enormous amounts of gmo monocrops in order to produce. Almond milk is indeed a wasteful product, but the misallocation of scarce water due to regulation is not the same thing as greenhouse gases.
greenonions··on Is everything falling apart?
As an American, I tend to think we have a sort of permanent linguistic hyperinflation. Everything here is always bigger, huger. Sometimes it's true and sometimes it's not.

Part of the strength of the nation, however, is that everything is a big deal, all the time. This causes things to (eventually) get dealt with.

greenonions··on Tax the Land
I think it's safe to assume that federal taxes aren't going anywhere. Likewise, I think it's very unlikely that suburban communities receive income taxing authority. Given those, I think the general prediction of American towns "going broke" in the sense of being unsustainable is true.
greenonions··on Moskva cruiser sank while being towed in a storm – Russian Defense Ministry
I don't think it's entirely clear that the US/Europe has the appetite to go to war over the use of a tactical nuke.
greenonions··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
Maybe this is too personal, but is your relationship with your partner strong? Frankly, my guess, just by your attitude towards this innocuous article, is no.
greenonions··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
As a counter question: why do men not recognize that these simple tasks make women feel loved and respected?

My own father is the perfect example of a man who cannot deal with these minor irritations. My mother complies with his requests and their relationship is maintained.

If you read the article, it's not that the irritation is minor. Of course it's a very small task. The issue is that the (often male) partner never chooses to act differently for the sake of their partner. If it isn't difficult to do the task, why don't you just do it? If your wife asks you to put the dishes in the dishwasher, why don't you just do it? It's not hard and will make her happy.

Obviously some people will have very unreasonable standards/requests. However, I think it's more common that one partner repeatedly refuses to do anything differently for the sake of their partner, argues about it, and then wonders why their relationship is so bad.
