greenleafjacob··on One year into legal pot sales California doesn’t have expected bustling industry
While I don't disagree with much of what you said, your characterization of schedule 1 generally is factually incorrect. There is still testing of schedule 1 substances; as of 2017 there were more than 590 researchers registered to study schedule 1 substances. Both THC and CBD have been approved for medicinal uses (Marinol and Epidiolex respectively).

On what grounds? It was already conclusively decided in Gonzales vs Raich.
greenleafjacob··on Ask HN: What is a secure way to allow 2FA resets?
California drivers licenses are not reissued when you update your address [1].

> A new driver license, identification card or registration card is not issued when changing your address.

Photo ID is not used for authenticating that the person lives at the address. That's why voting registration or driver's license requires proof of residency [1]:

> A few examples of acceptable documents to prove California residency are:

> Rental or lease agreement with the signature of the owner/landlord and the tenant/resident

> Deed or title to residential real property

> Mortgage bill

> Home utility bills (including cellular phone)

> Medical documents

> Employee documents

> That design was heavily based off of number theoretical knowledge I had to dust off

The fact you had to "dust it off" implies that it was not top of mind, which is precisely the argument people have been making; that it's not top of mind, and need not be because it can be "dust[ed] off", and that investing months in prep just to pass an arbitrary hoop is a waste of time.

> if this int or uint under or overflows, throw an exception

Overflow flags are supported on some architectures, so it would really just be a matter of checking that flag.

Wouldn't anycast be a solution? Then the CDN can provide the same IP to all users, but the network layer ensures that the IP is one close to the user.
greenleafjacob··on Resin.io changes name to balena, releases open-source edition
Will do, this project has started using resin\b\b balena a lot in the past few months so I will definitely reach out to the Balena team.

greenleafjacob··on Resin.io changes name to balena, releases open-source edition
Resin (now Balena Cloud) is good but relatively bare bones at the moment. Issues we ran into:

- PagerDuty integration of device up/down (had to build our own similar to [1])

- Pinning specific devices to not latest version (not possible)

- Pinning specific devices to branch (not possible)

- Incremental / gradual / staged deployments (supposedly API has support for this but missing from standard tooling)

- Semantic versioning of releases (not possible, it only accepts and shows git SHA256)

- SSH access is technically possible (we reverse engineered their CLI tool which connects to their SSH reverse proxy) but it would be nicer if the resin ssh command provided a way to run remote commands non-interactively (e.g. to scrape load average, etc.).

- No prebuilt instrumentation like load average, memory usage, etc.

Time not spent going out and buying food is more time I can spend with my friends, family and hobbies. If you spend 30 minutes per day on logistics of going out, buying, traveling, and coming back, then that's a full week per year.

greenleafjacob··on California to become first state to require companies to have women on boards
The language of 301.3(a) is "a publicly held domestic or foreign corporation". I'm not sure if it's intended to be read as "publicly held AND (domestic OR foreign)" but it seems like that is how it should be read in light of 2115.5(b). In that case, how many public corporations have one board member?

Since iOS 9 it continuously backs up to iCloud by default [1] so it's not true that it doesn't help someone who never set up iCloud.

As an iPhone and Macbook user I agree with you that repairability is an issue. To be honest it is something I am taking seriously in my next laptop purchase and might be the issue that tips me back over to PC/Android. I definitely will not be "upgrading" to the new touchbar, keyboard and trackpad.

greenleafjacob··on USA Temperature: can I sucker you?
It's a logical fallacy, but it can be a pragmatic decision to delegate reasoning, especially where the claim is expensive to evaluate (e.g. science because of time for prerequisite knowledge and training) or the consequence of being wrong is low.

Uber drivers get kicked off Uber if they do it too often. They might have the same incentives but the platform at least helps prevent it.
greenleafjacob··on Prime Down: Amazon’s sale day turns into fail day
I’m not sure how it’s relevant. If you have the infrastructure to send 1000 concurrent users you can probably send 1M concurrent users. We only test small integer multiples of our peak traffic, and if your absolute number of servers to service that is in the millions then it would make absolute sense to be routinely running that capacity test. If that means “scale up 1M+ servers” then that is what you have to do, otherwise how can you be sure?
greenleafjacob··on Prime Down: Amazon’s sale day turns into fail day
At Uber we invested in synthetic load tools that create fake riders and drivers, match them, etc and test our entire dispatch system end to end to arbitrary amounts of online driver and riders. I don’t see why they couldn’t do the same with carts, adding products to carts, etc
greenleafjacob··on Prime Down: Amazon’s sale day turns into fail day
This is not right from an infra POV. You are just moving the problem (by team) but it doesn’t go away. Then you end up with duplication.
