greenie_beans··on Ask HN: AI Panic, you buying it?
idk about the marketing ploy, but the latest mainstream media coverage is giving covid panic vibes. which is making me think it'll be fine. it's also entertaining how the rationalists who work for the AI companies are being extremely irrational with their fear
greenie_beans··on Wendell Berry has died
nah, i live a very fulfilling life outside of work. i just found programming enjoyable to do, instead of freelance copywriting which legitimately made me wanna die and never write again. decided that programming was a good source of income that wouldn't starve my writing life
greenie_beans··on Paid Phones
yes! just tried to post this here. amazing.
greenie_beans··on Wendell Berry has died
this one hit me hard! why do i work in technology
greenie_beans··on The Twelve-Factor App (2025)
need something better than the .env honeypot in this AI age. but idk what that might be
greenie_beans··on CMS with AI, Not AI CMS: Wagtail 8.0's New API
hell yeah excited to do stuff with this
greenie_beans··on Show HN: 1667, a terminal UI for writing fiction with language models
sorry i'm a writer who edits... this project is genuinely interesting and i'm curious to see where it goes. i would try to market it as ML instead of AI, given the current temperature of AI in publishing and writing circles. if somebody can improve upon track changes in a git-like, narrative-tree way, then that might be super useful tool!
greenie_beans··on Show HN: 1667, a terminal UI for writing fiction with language models
i just use track changes for that + a "trash" doc, or an entirely new story if it needs more space, but go off.

i also made an app for my writing process and quickly realized it was a distraction from the actual work of writing

greenie_beans··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich (2023)
fwiw, we get bad hurricanes more than that and also the mid-south is the new tornado alley. there was a very bad ice storm this past winter. natural disasters happen everywhere. and it's hot AF in july and august, like so hot that you stay inside all day.
greenie_beans··on Why Do Fewer Renters Expect to Move?
also indisputable that market forces cause developers to not build because the ROI is not there or it's too risky
greenie_beans··on Why Do Fewer Renters Expect to Move?
you are correct that we need to increase supply, and socialized housing creates more supply. great idea
greenie_beans··on Claude Opus 5
the writing style is so bad. cryptic sorta smart sentences that beat around the bush. say what you are trying to say!
greenie_beans··on Who Is America's Homer?
no talk about the only american writer with the guts to try to be like homer? the battlefield where the moon says i love you by frank stanford. obscure just like homer was in his time.

also, no mention in these comments about william faulkner?

though, i would bet money that "the american homer" will be somebody most readers have never heard of.

it's definitely not twain or hemingway, like everybody is saying. if you think it's twain, then it is faulkner, who was the first white writer to not write a one dimensional black character.

and no talk about toni morrison?? zora neale hurston??? do y'all read american literature?

greenie_beans··on New York becomes the first state to impose a data center moratorium
why are we talking about bernie sanders in the context of new york state? he's a US senator from vermont. this is state-level politics, not federal, in the state of new york, not vermont. and he's not mentioned once in this article?
greenie_beans··on 98% Isn't Much
> 98% is great for exceptionally good things, like dramatically increasing someone’s quality of life, but very low for basic expectations, like a baby surviving a babysitter taking care of them.

this is your brain on data science. so absurd that i laughed out loud when i read "like a baby surviving a babysitter taking care of them" like what is that phrase doing in this sentence and argument

greenie_beans··on Most arguments are about ego, not ideas
would you like to argue about this?
greenie_beans··on Why I Stopped Arguing with People
i would like to point out the irony that people are arguing about this in the comments.

my life has gotten so much better when i actively don't engage in arguments. especially when i know i'm right.

of course it's easier said than done but growth is a long road.

greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
YIMBYs will point to a chart of new multifamily builds and conveniently not look at the building starts before the regulations were moved and then certainly not think about what was happening in the economy during that time.

a market with regulations: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/HOUST

crazy that there were more houses being built pre-GFC when all those burdensome regulations were so suffocating and it never rebounded

greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
i never hear YIMBYs talk about this: https://yonahfreemark.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Freemar...
greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
i said "a SFH" not a neighborhood development with nice and fake numbers, and a scenario totally disconnected from reality. if costs that much to build in an area that shouldn't have a structure then that's on you.

thankfully we have regulations that disincentive those projects. there are plenty of other spots to build especially in the denser areas

greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
idk you definitely need a lot of money to build a building, i didn't realize that was up for debate. also we are not talking about code regulations, we're talking about local regulations
greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
yeah i don't think NYC people are gonna leave SF for NYC. those are two totally different cities with different experiences and different culture. you can live an urban lifestyle in all 50 states btw
greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
yeah for sure and i didn't say that isn't a cost. i said it's a small part of the cost, almost negligible compared to the cost to actually build
greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
it most certainly is not going to cost me $100k in engineering to design a SFH in arguably one of the most regulatory burdened states in the US: vermont
greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
housing is expensive everywhere, not just in SF and NYC. def expensive in Austin. how do the zoning laws in SF make NYC more expensive?
greenie_beans··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
i would love to hear a YIMBY consider the market forces/how capitalism works and not just reduce it to regulation. aka when it costs over $500k to build a single apartment unit and most of those costs are construction with very little of the regulation burden driving up that cost.
greenie_beans··on The Competitive Moat That AI Can't Replicate
they charge my $60 bar tab for $20 and get tipped $20. then the bar closes and we hang out at the bar drinking for free. you should only comment on things that you know about. sorry you don't have the same experience
greenie_beans··on The Competitive Moat That AI Can't Replicate
i love connecting with a bookseller at a local independent bookstore. or a bartender. or a server. etc. such a more interesting life if you connect with people at the businesses in your community
greenie_beans··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
the internet backbone for booksellers: https://bookhead.net
greenie_beans··on Programmers will document for Claude, but not for each other
good thing i've been writing for myself all along
