greedo··on The Mathocalypse
It's common in journalism to call to use lead.
greedo··on Former SR-71 engineer talks NASA's Blackbird revival program
NASA isn't keeping 25 MIG-21 flying, Draken is, as a contractor providing dissimilar aircraft training to the US military (and other nations).
greedo··on Former SR-71 engineer talks NASA's Blackbird revival program
I use a Thermopen almost daily to check fry temperatures. I don't go above 400º F however.
greedo··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
Your comparison to Germany with "30x" the risk is pointless when less than two are murdered per year. Measure that against police misconduct that results in bodily harm/death per year.
greedo··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
Those responsible are mostly dead...
greedo··on What happened to the Snowden archive
That is a non-sequitur. Many societies and governments (the leadership you're referring to) are not "doing something right blah blah blah." They're using "tradition", "culture" "respect for the past" as a means of controlling their populace and hanging on to power. You're conflating society with government.
greedo··on What happened to the Snowden archive
That purpose is to further entrench and protect the power of those in power.
greedo··on How SpaceX streamlined the Raptor engine
"coming out of early development" that has been going on for almost a decade...
greedo··on How SpaceX streamlined the Raptor engine
Considering he wanted to rescue those poor kids trapped in an underwater cave by building a submarine, the parallels are closer than you'd think...
greedo··on Stop making swap partitions—use swap files instead
LVM for a *nix sysadmin is cheat mode for managing storage.
greedo··on Stop making swap partitions—use swap files instead
There are also controls that specify noexec, nodev etc for filesystems.
greedo··on What will our economic future look like?
Healthcare costs (what I assume you mean by prices) are the least market-driven items in the US economy. And as much as the medical community would have you believe, the primary driver of costs are labor costs. If we had twice the number of doctors, PRNs, PAs, and nurses, their annual income would drop dramatically. But since they're constrained by a guild system, it's not going to happen.
greedo··on iPhone Duo
You sound like ESR ranting about how Apple was doomed by Android back when the iPhone came out. He would rant and rant every time about how there was no conceivable way that Apple could survive. Somehow, Apple has managed to survive by the skin of it's teeth.../s
greedo··on iPhone Duo
I'll criticize Apple with the best of them, but AirPods being "middling?"
greedo··on iPhone Duo
Since Apple doesn't release iPhone sales figures per model, I'm suspicious about your sales metrics.
greedo··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
Yes. As a father of two (grown) children in the US, this is the default assumption for most men.
greedo··on You probably own this 7-Eleven (and that's why it looks so sad)
I don't think there's anything to back up your last sentence. In my small city, there's at least four convenience store chains, and many of them use the owner's name as part of the street (advertised) name. There's also a lot of small convenience stores that are single owner, many serving immigrant communities.
greedo··on You probably own this 7-Eleven (and that's why it looks so sad)
Back in the 80's you still needed to have multiple stores. Otherwise your overhead from back office and maintenance stuff would just eat up too much profits. Once you hit three stores, you could start to make serious money if you ran a tight ship.
greedo··on Mykhailo Fedorov reveals struggle to secure Patriot missiles and Western support
KH101 is a cruise missile, not ballistic.
greedo··on Mykhailo Fedorov reveals struggle to secure Patriot missiles and Western support
Ballistic missiles have limited maneuverability, and what little they do is not very significant for a system like Patriot PAC3-MSE.
greedo··on Mykhailo Fedorov reveals struggle to secure Patriot missiles and Western support
Ukraine had to become extremely parsimonious with their Patriot use as supplied dwindled to a fraction. In many cases Ukraine simply chose not to engage unless the Kinzal/Iskanders were optimally detected and attacking a significant target.

And the upgrades really weren't much except adding decoys that had always been an option with Iskander.

Now that worldwide inventories of PAC3-MSE are almost non-existent, Russia will push its MIRBM attacks over the next year or more. Ukraine really doesn't have many options other than to continuing their drone offensive against deep targets in Russia.

greedo··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
It was definitely Creech. I remember the spate of articles discussing how the officers (the USAF requires drones to be piloted by officers) were both struggling with the close up nature of drone strikes combined with fewer or even non-existent flight hours affecting promotions.
greedo··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
Some minor quibbles...

It's Offut AFB, home of StratCom. Eppely is the municipal airport. And Offut doesn't have any drone units, nor do they manage any. They due process reconnaissance for sure, but actual drone strikes aren't conducted from there.

Creech AFB is where most of the drone units operating Reaper/Avenger etc are based.

greedo··on Mykhailo Fedorov reveals struggle to secure Patriot missiles and Western support
PAC-3 MSE can take down Iskanders. Not a very favorable exchange rate when you fire 2-3 per Iskander, but still doable.

If NATO was fighting Russia, launch aircraft (and airbases) would be prime targets. Ukraine fights the way it does because of very limited funds and resources.

greedo··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
350º internal temp for medium done?

Maybe you forgot to include the glue on your pizza as well.

greedo··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
ATACMS and PrSM would definitely be used to strike air defense systems. The US military is very joint and the boundary you're delineating isn't part of the mission tasking.
greedo··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
No PrSM were donated to Ukraine, and only a small number of legacy ATACMS were delivered. Under 200 from open sources...
greedo··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Civil War casualties were over 700K...
greedo··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Also, you can jam JDAM (GPS) guidance. The Russians are masters at jamming and I'm fairly confident they've shared some systems with Iran.
greedo··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
I think you should avail yourself of this thing called the Internet to research before you beclown yourself.

US missile production is extremely, painfully slow. From Standard missiles used by the Navy to Patriot. From THAAD to PrSM. LRASM, Tomahawk, you name it, we have a Tiffany weapons arsenal. We're winning so much, we just put the F-15 back into production; a plane that entered service 50 years ago.

Historians used to mock the Nazis for continually developing wunderwaffe; while the Allies overwhelmed them with Sherman and T-34 tanks. Now we've become the Nazis (in so many more ways than one.)
