grebc··on Parmiagiano and Financialisation: Cheese as Gold for the Gold of Cheese
Same stuff, different sticker price. Thanks Europe.

Just call it parmesan and don’t be an asshole, how about that?
grebc··on The End of a Fair Price: Dynamic Pricing and the Normalization of Gouging
Seems like a rare instance of an insurance company actually doing their job and providing actuarial services rather than just gouging you after a claim.

Shockingly bad, any move away from big tech is a good one in my opinion. And I’ve got a lot of moving to do!

Let's leave it there mate.

You're not the OP, you/me we're only guessing what he/she might've meant.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
Keep speaking that truth, I’m sure someones listening.
grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
I never said there was less deaths, don’t put words in my mouth. I said for most regular people it’s likely a bad flu.

Did you know Italy’s death rate is still elevated, even 5/6 years after? Best go into lockdown since we don’t know why.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
1. They still don’t, you just lived through an episode though so you feel good because you survived and it feels like you’re prepared.

2. Cool story.

3. Another cool story.

4. Yeah. People lost their minds because people got sick and gate crashed the ED for what’s to mostly normal person a bad flu.

You’re proving my point that people lost their minds. Our hospitals are more up the creek presently. I can’t emphasise that enough. All the billions upon billions of dollars spent during & since on R&D, staff, resources, beds. PRESENTLY - no covid outbreak - thank the lord.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
That’s still correct, yes.

The guys edited his response at least 4 times now, it was an appropriate response to his hysterical reply at the time.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
That the path we took was the only path is where I draw issue. It was a choice to lockdown, I think it was a bad one. Covid killed even with lockdowns & vaccines. Birdflu is apparently ravaging Australian bird populations, just because it hasn't jumped species yet doesn't mean it won't... maybe we should lockdown just in case right?

I'm not in a position of power to make the calls as if something like this was to happen again, I'd only caution we look the prior experience to be a guide for what comes instead of pretending outbreaks haven't happened before.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
Millions of people die because of covid in Australia? Is that what you’re suggesting the outcome would’ve been if we didn’t lockdown?

That’s basically all the elderly or an entire cohort, I’m really struggling to believe that.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
None of them were inherent problems.

Good try.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
This might be Australia specific, but I think a lot of the movement restrictions were unnecessary. And long term damaging to not just adults but there’s a whole cohort of kids/teenagers who just missed out on certain things and we’re patting ourselves on the back we survived?

The places that needed restrictions such as hospitals & nursing homes still got covid by & large. We didn’t necessarily need to close down the whole show.

I’ve had my jabs, also had covid multiple times. I’m not a disbeliever, I just think the collective reaction was completely OTT.

grebc··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
I’ve had a pet theory for a long time that society loses it’s collective mind every 10ish years or so, usually starting with a good reason, but the outcome is mass stupidity followed by mass forgetting leading to a new cycle. War on terror, GFC, crypto, covid, now AI. Although the cycle does seem to be shortening.

Also we’re just so damn stupid to learn from history, or even just people 10 years older than us, that we repeat the cycle.

And there I guess is where saying a new sucker is born every minute is from.

grebc··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
Your for loop is using an iterator of some kind. Just because it’s hidden in your language of choice doesn’t mean it’s not there.

While/for can achieve the same thing, sometimes while is more practical as the steps to complete are unknown. But sure, stick your simple iterating a fixed collection as why it demonstrates while is a lesser language feature.

grebc··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
What are you even talking about.
grebc··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
You can use iterators in a while loop like your for example, making it look as clean as the for.

I feel like this is a case of personal preference over actual issue.

grebc··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
I’ve never ever heard while described as a smell, or even slightly smelly.

Care to explain?

May as well house them in Westminster. They don’t actually do anything useful there.
grebc··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
Yeah, I know what you mean by abusing 4 way stops being abused. Thankfully I moved from there a long time ago.

Also where I moved from recently, they changed a roundabout intersection into a traffic lights intersection. And the traffic used to flow. Now it’s a stand still.

There’s always so many little insights when you use the road daily that a planner will never have unless they do the same.

Melbourne where I am kind of close to now, has an absolute clusterf*ck of overpasses, underpasses, toll ways, free ways, tunnels all coming & going out of a neatly planned grid. They probably think it’s planning perfection while driving it as a non-resident is an absolute nightmare. Sydney which is famously poo poo’d for not being planned in Australia is 10x more straight forward to drive.

grebc··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
I like roundabouts over lights at small intersections. I still prefer simple give way/stop that changes the next intersection over roundabouts.

Lights suck unless there’s sufficient traffic.

grebc··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
Problem is most newer places are built of concrete or brick. I mean sure slap some white paint on but the that thermal material is going to take a lot of cooling/heating.
grebc··on How much oil-market buffer is left?
Diversification is different to derivatives, and also cashflow.

I’ve known plenty of farmers & co-ops. Big, medium, small, family. None used derivatives, at least not after trying them. A lot tried but never worked out like the finance people sold it to them.

It’s always finance people selling them, talking about the need.

It’s great there’s a market for it. You don’t need finance people mucking things up when actual delivery is the problem.

grebc··on How much oil-market buffer is left?

White or grey are grossly over represented in Australia.

It’s like people visit the remains of the forum in Rome and picture the colours being as they are today instead of the ridiculously bright/strong colours they would have been when erected/used.
