grebc··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Likely the most astute observation in all 150+ comments.
grebc··on There's No Limit to How Bad Code Can Get
6 deep is some rookie numbers, get those indent levels up.

I actually have no problem with most the code in one file vs. lots of little files. That said right click "Go to definition" is a lovely feature in VS.

Accountants get to charge high rates largely because good advice saves their customers large amounts of tax. When we're talking tax accountants of course. There's all sorts of accountants though - audit, management, forensic etc.

Only if it doesn’t embarrass his orangeness.
grebc··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
I find the contrary about a comparison to religious fervour. That everyone needs to use it, or feel the same way the adherents do is telling.
grebc··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
There’s not even a monetary reward like there might’ve been for the crypto hype cycle if you bought early and sold before everyone else.
grebc··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
Lots of people are just asking their favourite LLM to rewrite an existing app/library because I’m more productive after spending 3 months writing custom software vs spending 2 hours reading docs and using existing software to achieve some other goal.

Better to make a custom 3d renderer than just use Unity to make a game.

You can find something interesting without brow-beating people about it.

Now a fake name accusation is thrown by someone with three first names.

Keep digging that hole, I’m sure you’ll surface somewhere with some sunshine.

STD outbreak maps better.

Now you’re claiming people don’t understand unless they build something.

Boy, oh boy, do you keep digging your logic hole that much deeper.

As mentioned earlier, Sam thanks you for your obfuscation efforts while his equity keeps going up. The swindle continues.

We're talking to a RLVR bot.

Bad bot.

Bad bot.
grebc··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
I'm not the one asking the question, I'm providing an answer.

That you don't like the answer speaks more to your state of mind than my own.

grebc··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
The orange one. Duh.
grebc··on “Next-token predictor” is the wrong mental model for LLMs
My understanding about your third point is the LLM generates lots of different answers, then they’re ranked according to some computation the creators came up with.

I’m still not sure what doesn’t qualify any of that as a prediction, and I’ll be more blunt: a guess.

grebc··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
Dick Cheney.

Edit: I don’t really care though, I’m not a US citizen. Trump is terrible still. Shouldn’t have voted him in.

grebc··on Gimlet's Series B
Hits all the talking points raised in yesterday's discussion about venture capital not actually being venture capital anymore.

Light is dark. Up is down. Venture capital is useful.

You don't need to build a car to understand one.

That you tie yourself up in knots of fancy acronyms instead of plain words and that your argument boils down to semantics of the word prediction, it's pretty clear what is up brother.

grebc··on “Next-token predictor” is the wrong mental model for LLMs
Yes, no logic is necessary for LLM adherents we're all finding out.

Carry on good soldier.

grebc··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
I sold a house recently, my lawyer/solicitor who’s physically known me for 6+ years had to scan my passport & licence to “verify” me according to new AML laws.

KYC & AML is poison.

Edit: to be clear, this lawyer also represented me when I bought said property.

grebc··on “Next-token predictor” is the wrong mental model for LLMs
The blog post itself says one thing, but then demonstrates the exact thing they’re arguing against.

If you can’t grasp that logic gap then there’s no point discussing further.

grebc··on “Next-token predictor” is the wrong mental model for LLMs
Obfuscation is the goal of the hype cycle in VC. Certain firms & individuals are minting money and that’s all that matters to them.

That there’s a legion of LLM nerds arguing deterministic this, pretraining & rewards that all the better for the con job they’re pulling off.

The technology will be relegated to the trash bin of history, just like crypto.

grebc··on “Next-token predictor” is the wrong mental model for LLMs
It’s deterministically trivial.
grebc··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
You’re conflating the real life need of ID, with trust in the organisation.

Sorry. Wrong.

grebc··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
I don’t really trust anyone to get PKI right. There’s enough mistakes in the www realm that pretty well prove bad actors will get through.

The alternative is do it offline.

grebc··on 1Password Replied to My Disappointment
Dictator/Emperor is a better word for Trumps desire. It’s what he desperately wants despite being born free.
grebc··on VC isn't VC anymore
You’re better off bootstrapping/self-funding and just being a humble old business, not a startup.
grebc··on Mark Cuban: Why US hospitals "don't know their costs"
I’m not sure that’s how it’s supposed to work.

Every insurer will tell you they calculate all the probabilities and charge you the appropriate premium.

But we all know they just recoup losses next year. There’s no actuarial math going into it.
