greatpatton··on Cost of public EV charging rises by more than 42% in four months
Yes it's an issue when people have decided that energy generation should be outsources somewhere else... If you close your nuclear reactor you can only blame yourself if your power generation infrastructure is undersized.

Can we please stop to compare to a Baltic state when their size is smaller than that of a western Europe large city. It doesn't bring anything to the comparison. (I'm pretty sure it's an order of magnitude of what San Marino need)

Just to put in perspective your 60 nuclear reactors, currently China is building 36 new reactor, 50 more are in final project phase and in total they will add 160 new reactors in the next 20 years. This coupled with the massive installation of renewable, China is the only country that is going to handle the CO2 problem in the foreseeable future.

greatpatton··on Cost of public EV charging rises by more than 42% in four months
My point is that 15% is still 15% even it represents the population of Estonia or of a suburb of NY.

By the way you are mixing everything. I talk about private transport and you give me the figure for total energy consumption... Total energy consumption is not going to increase!!! The petrol burnt in an engine is already counted. Because of all the loss due to the pathetic yield of IEC engines, your are not going to increase the total energy consumption but decrease it when you will electrify transport.

For Switzerland electrification of all private transport represent the addition of 2 nuclear reactors, so no nothing to write home about regarding sizing of the grid.

greatpatton··on Cost of public EV charging rises by more than 42% in four months
A study was made for Switzerland. If all private cars were going electric, it will only require an additional 17% to the current electric generation. This is not a shitload... People keep forgetting that the yield of an ICE is really really bad.
greatpatton··on Poland plans to seek $1.3T in reparations from Germany for WWII
When eastern part of Germany was annexed to Poland they used the Oder-Neisse line which run along 2 rivers hence this border. If it was still Germany the border would still make sense.
greatpatton··on Ask HN: How worried should I be about Google randomly suspending my accounts?
Not only that they can just shutdown your account because you shared picture of your son infected penis with your pediatrician.

https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/billboards-seen-in-LA-a...

And now their reviewers are also supposed to be wannabe doctor. I quote "The company has consulted pediatricians, she said, so that its human reviewers understand possible conditions that might appear in photographs taken for medical reasons."

and

"A Google spokesperson said the company stands by its decisions, even though law enforcement cleared the two men. "

Ok this time I'm really off Google.

greatpatton··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
Moving all private cars to electricity will increase total electricity consumption by 19% (https://phys.org/news/2015-07-cars-electric.html). This number is not something worrying in any way, and well manageable by the current incremental improvement of the electricity grid.
greatpatton··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
It's great when it works, and can also be costly when it doesn't or when you blindly trust it.
greatpatton··on Earth Overshoot Day
ok but technological evolution follow the same curve. We would not be able to sustain current population with 1900 technologies. It's very strange to completely discard technology evolution in this equation.
greatpatton··on Delhi suffers at 49°C as heatwave sweeps India
White is not by nature prone to yellowing. Some paint are (the organic component of the paint), but if you are using a lime wash it will never turn yellow and TiO2 as a pigment is very stable.
greatpatton··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
The probability of that income is quite hypothetical. Most of the time, the person would never have payed for it.
greatpatton··on Netflix hints at password sharing crackdown as subscribers fall
Don't complain in Switzerland we have the most expensive price (24.9CHF or about 26.7$) and we have the smallest catalog and no local content...
greatpatton··on Assange extradition order issued by UK court
If it was an Australian citizen that was under the threat of an extradition to China for exposing the shit they did, the outrage will be total! But here it is supposed to be the "good guys" doing it. Funny how the yard stick can change... but the rest of the world will see it for what it is.
greatpatton··on Artificial sweeteners are associated with increased cancer risk
"how effective are these sorts of statistical methods?"

Exactly they are so many variables to take into account that each population subset is becoming very small. I would love to have the insight of a stats nerd on the study.

Btw if you look at the raw data, they are for instance less cases per subject in the high consumer than in the low or none consumer (table 2), but they get a higher hazard ration, meaning that other correction were taken into account. It is very difficult to interpret such results.

greatpatton··on Trevor Noah’s feud with France over race, identity, and Africa
From a European point of view this is really strange and the emphasis on the external aspect of someone seems to be the key. Trevor Noah, like the leading French player or even the former US president all have a white parent but somehow everybody define them as black or Afro-xxx. This is for me a strange perception. Some people from north Africa cannot really be really distinguished from a south European person and nobody would call them Afro something. So it's not the continent but the external aspect of that person that is defining the person and the color is taking precedence on everything. I think this is what most people in France won't agree with.
greatpatton··on Snowboarding for Geeks: An Ultimate Guide (2018)
I'm 48, been skiing since I was 3 and switched to mainly snowboard at 17 (and living less then 30min from a lot of ski resorts). I ski from time to time, mainly when with the kids and when the snow is hard. But as soon as there is powder, nothing is better than my snowboard. Just today, I'm back from a day of freeriding with friends and the kids. This will always remain an incredible feeling that I will never get on my skis. Modern carving skis are also fun, but different. There is never a too old to ride. I know snowboarders in their 70s. Modern binding takes seconds to tie and nothing will beat softboots (especially in stairs), and the pain you can get with some ski boots. And at the end of the day I will always feel less tired when snowboarding than skiing.
greatpatton··on France to Build Six New Nuclear Reactors
"Just as an example, the best performing company this year is Total with 15B and which is happily feeding the government with petrodollars and the other people with lies about "Net Zero " etc."

French government is not a shareholder of Total at any meaningful level, less than 30% of Total shareholders are French and Total is a multinational paying taxes in multiple countries, so I don't know from where your petrodollars are coming from.

There is a lot that can be say about French energy policy but mentioning Total is really the less relevant one...

greatpatton··on Spinal implants allow paralysed people to walk, swim and cycle again
Please this is public research from a public University, what do you expect? That they can scale it to 1000 of people? This is research as intended, now commercial products may be built out of this but it will take time again.
greatpatton··on Nvidia prepares to abandon $40B Arm bid
Seems that it's not as simple as mentioned here: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/326617-arm-refutes-acc...
greatpatton··on More people died of superbacteria in 2019 than HIV or malaria, study suggests
They are many bacterial vaccine out there against pneumococcal, meningococcal, typhoid fever, cholera, haemophilus influenzae type B etc.
greatpatton··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
How really can you tell me how many project migration project that involve changing a whole basic infrastructure is done in less than 5 months from idea to completion in your company? For a personal project where you may not have a lot of time to invest in this is quite short.
greatpatton··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
People are talking about their purchases on Google play, but that's not the main point. All the web services where you used Google as the IdP are going to be toasted if you move. You will to go through all the services you use to see how to transfer your account there. It will teach me one thing: never ever use an external IdP and always create local account.
greatpatton··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
Yes but for my family of 4 it would cost me 4612= 288$ per year! That's about 50% of my yearly unlimited fiber internet access (that also come with a free email).

For me that's the last nail in the coffin, will make sure in the future to keep away from all Google product (private or professional).

What is strange is how in a few year Google went from the cool company where everybody wanted to work to something that can almost be compared to a tobacco company.

greatpatton··on Russia sends troops to Kazakhstan to put down deadly uprising
Yes but Russia and India don't share a border
greatpatton··on How South Korean TV took over the world
The representation of the gravity on the moon was so off that it completely killed the show for me.
greatpatton··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
96% of the participants were fully vaccinated.
greatpatton··on Tesla remotely unlocks Model 3 car, uses smart summon to help repo agent
Not much into US law, but can someone tell us what is happening if you had personal possession of value in your car?
greatpatton··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
Seems from this case in Norway (https://www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2807/1560-7917.E...) that Moderna is a tad bit better at preventing infection from Omicron, but when you see the overall number of cases among fully vaccinated people I'm not very optimistic that vaccine with do something at limiting the spread of infection, however I'm optimistic that they will still be efficient to prevent severe disease.
greatpatton··on Financial Secrecy Index
The USA are the only country not part of CRS. Have a look here: https://www.oecd.org/tax/automatic-exchange/international-fr...

The USA is always "do as I say not as I do" and they have zero credibility regarding tax evasion :

```the IRS is still not obligated to share information pertaining to:
    * Cash accounts held by entities, including those that are resident in the FATCA partner jurisdiction;
    * Non-cash accounts, whether held by individuals or entities, unless the accounts earn U.S.-sourced income; and
    * ‘‘Controlling persons’’ of any entities that have accounts in U.S. financial institutions, regardless of whether those entities are from the partnering country, even if those entities are owned and controlled by residents of the partner jurisdiction.
```
greatpatton··on Don't give up on having kids because of climate change
The problem is not housing rules, it's the concentration of companies in the same place that drives the concentration of talents which itself drives the concentration of companies... From my point of view the only things that can solve this issue is remote working on a large scale.
greatpatton··on The Kidney Project successfully tests a prototype bioartificial kidney
