great_wubwub··on Replacement.ai
> It's bog standard for employees...in the UK and for multinationals including American companies

^^^ that's the thing. Contracts are by country, not by company ownership.

I worked for an F100 multinational US-based company for many years. My coworkers in the EU (including the UK at the time) got contracts. A buddy who was a bona fide rock star in the US got one. I know VPs got them.

I got nothing, as did the vast, vast majority of my US-based friends. And while I'm not a rock star, I'm pretty well known within my niche and am not a bottom-feeder. It really is as bleak as you might fear.

great_wubwub··on Replacement.ai
I'm not sure where you live, but employee contracts in the US are very rare in tech. Unions, execs, and rock stars - that's about it. The rest of us are at-will and disposable. Worker protections in the US are limited to "the machine can't eat more than two of your fingers per day" and "you can't work people more than 168 hours in a week".
great_wubwub··on Attention is a luxury good
> No product is even remotely for the consumer anymore, they’re all just minimal pretenses to try and advertise you and extract more of your attention and money.

This is a beautiful sentence.

I would add that under modern-day aggressive hyper-capitalism all attention can be translated to money, so it's all just products whose job is to get you to buy more products.

great_wubwub··on Modern Linux tools
I've been playing around with this over the years and this is what I put in my .rgrc:

--smart-case --no-messages --hidden --ignore-vcs

and then point to it with

.zshenv 3:export RIPGREP_CONFIG_PATH="$HOME/.rgrc"

Not perfect and sometimes I reach for good old fashioned escaped \grep but most of the time it's fine.

great_wubwub··on An illustrated introduction to linear algebra
ooh, yeah, prime numbers is an even better idea.
great_wubwub··on An illustrated introduction to linear algebra
This is clear and useful but I wish you'd picked different example numbers. Using 1 and 2 for both bread and milk makes it harder to look at the matrix form and immediately see whether a 1 in a matrix is the bread 1 or the milk 1. If you could use 1,2,3,4 instead of 1,2,1,2 it would make things much clearer.
great_wubwub··on A Beautiful Maths Game
This looks pretty but it's very confusing and I have no idea what it wants from me. It says 'click here!' so I did but nothing came of it.

great_wubwub··on Why Pandas feels clunky when coming from R (2024)
I have no R experience but have been using Polars instead of Pandas for this sort of stuff and it feels less clunky. How does Polars compare to R?
great_wubwub··on Can a corporation be pardoned?
So a corporation can do bad things like poison entire communities and get out of trouble by slipping the president some money? And that's how the framers intended this to work?

We sure have come a long way since "by the people, for the people". It's the capitalist version of buying indulgences (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgence). Sounds like it's time for 95 Theses II: Electric Boogaloo.

IPAM is insane. BYOIP requires IPAM. This makes things even more insane - if you want to manage any BYOIP addresses you need to enable IPAM for all IP addresses (not just BYOIP) in an account.

We tried this at a previous job to manage a pair of /24s and it ended up requiring us to manage _hundreds of thousands_ of rfc1918 IP addresses in IPAM, which cost us something like tens of thousands of dollars per month.

For a pair of /24s.

great_wubwub··on Why training AI can't be IP theft
No - it's the reproduction, not the memorization.
great_wubwub··on RISC architecture did change everything
You could spell it out - "R-I-S-C".

The first three letters could be "Rice" or "Rise" instead of "Riss".

I suppose you could have a soft "C" - "risch" - but that's a stretch and reminds me of Sean Connery.

Never underestimate the power of people to put weird sounds to letters. I used to do a lot of network stuff and somebody once pronounced MPLS (which you very much need to spell out) as "mipples" and it scarred me for life.

Yeah, 'tool' here is a little generous. "list of order of magnitude of some things" is more like it

TFTP is probably the exception to that rule. All the other protocols started out easily enough and added more and more cruft. TFTP stayed the way it's always been - minimalist, terrifyingly awful at most things, handy for a few corner cases. If you know when to use it and when to use something like SCP, you're golden.

If TFTP had gone the way of SNMP, we'd have 'tftp <src> <dest> --proto tcp --tls --retries 8 --log-type json' or some horrendous mess like that.

It is sad that part of a state's response to a disaster has to include defensive propaganda[1] in order to justify federal aid to impacted residents. What should be a no-brainer has now turned into a PR battle.

[1] "information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause", per Kagi. Not all propaganda is bad.

great_wubwub··on Making Beautiful API Keys
Yeah, the code is easy but navel-gazing and agonizing over the prettiest way to replace a long jumble of dash-separated lowercase characters with a slightly shorter jumble of dash-separated uppercase characters is an insane thing to spend any time on at all. Convince me this has any commercial value and isn't just bikeshedding.
great_wubwub··on Ask HN: How do you communicate in a remote startup?
One thing people miss about remote work is that it's inherently transactional. Show up to a meeting, get or give what's needed, then go back in your hole. This is nice but for many people the lack of genuine social interaction is a killer.

A few jobs ago we set up Donut (donut.com) to set up a couple 15- or 30-minute 1:1s per week and tried to stick to the rule that we weren't supposed to talk about work, just chat about whatever. A replacement for break room chatter, not Yet Another Meeting. It didn't always work very well but when it did, it was great.

Some of the best conversations I had were with an autistic SRE who spent his first month telling everyone how autistic he was in case we needed to know. He did better virtually than he would have in person - lack of eye contact due to camera angles, maybe? So yeah, this has value even for you neuro-atypical, "I don't need chatter, just code" types.

I have the Original and have had it since it was the only thing they made. It's picky but if you get it all dialed right it makes great espresso.

great_wubwub··on Crafting endless AS paths in BGP
> i have yet to see any service provider use BGP confederation in production.

BBN ran them back in the 90s because (IIRC) they pre-dated route reflectors and were impossible to cleanly migrate off of. Other than that, yeah, nobody uses these things. RRs or (rarely) full mesh FTW.

This post the equivalent of "creating a bleeding foot by using only a knife and your foot".
