graymatters··on Money Can’t Buy Happiness. It Can’t Even Buy Status, a New Book Says
Davos sponsored “research”?
graymatters··on Ask HN: With recent layoffs, how would you advise new grads entering the market?
Switch professions, before it’s too late.
graymatters··on Ask HN: Why aren't there any cars in Nineteen Eighty-Four?
Cars are means and symbols of individual independence and freedom. As such, they wouldn’t be allowed in a 1984 world. Beware those trying to eliminate cars.
graymatters··on Tar.pl – A tar creator and extractor in ~130 lines of Prolog
Rubbish. It’s attitude like that which keeps less common languages from taking off. Hidden mindset-language bias stemming from using the hammer you’re familiar with for every nail.

Moreover, Prolog in particular requires a complete mindset change in order to naturally write in it. Once you reach that level - anything is possible and even not that hard to write in Prolog.

graymatters··on Thousands of scientists publish a paper every five days (2018)
It’s time to do something about that. Isn’t it time to have two categories of authorship on (scientific) papers - authors and enablers? The latter is for people who organized, supervised and otherwise enabled the work etc.

Other suggestions how to address the problem are welcome.

graymatters··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
HP. Both Elitebook and Probook lines with Intel CPUs have served faithfully for many years. Latest been i5 11th gen and 40GB RAM, NVMe PCIe 3x4, FHD.
graymatters··on Hoax school shooting calls keep happening, and there's a pattern (October 2022)
Yup. It’s part of gun control campaign. Scare the living s#it out of the general population that is driven by hysteria anyhow.
graymatters··on Tell HN: Two YC companies in a row hired and then didn't take me on
Completely agree with the paid trials/projects point. The typical hiring process is so broken and one sided, with the interviewers wasting candidate’s time with no consideration whatsoever that it’s utterly disgusting.
graymatters··on Linux /proc/pid/stat parsing bugs
Aside from bashing a paradigm one is not used to/doesn’t like/didn’t grow up with, what are the real cases where dealing with the textual output of procfs creates serious realistic performance issues? The argument about insecurity of a hand rolled C parser for that is utterly unconvincing.
graymatters··on Ten influential programming languages (2020)
Can someone with real knowledge on deployment and usage of these language tell where are they being used (beyond a dedicated hobbyist community)? Which industries? What systems? Volume of transactions? Genuinely interested and will appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
graymatters··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
Yes. This is the result of vast olygopolization. Market shares cannot grow and natural growth of revenues are not enough for boards of directors. Thus, they want you to pay many times over your lifetime what you’d have paid once for a product.
graymatters··on Google elegantly says goodbye to Waze
Typical case of a monopoly hug-of-death. Buy a better competitor for (relatively) cheap, milk the bright but somewhat naive heads for ideas and smother to death. Leaving no trace. Waze was great and achieved tremendous success all of its own before Google. There are entire countries that drive by Waze. Waze founders got greedy and sold out, being less naive than their employees they knew this would happen.

Google must be prosecuted and broken up for monopolistic practices.

graymatters··on Linux Desktop Environments System Usage
Yes, Windows 11 is surprisingly good. It’s the new Windows 7, which was the new Windows XP, which was the new Windows 98.
graymatters··on Linux Desktop Environments System Usage
The comparison is missing sway/Wayland and i3/X
graymatters··on Show HN: Hnpdf.com – Quick access to pdfs shared on Hacker News
This is useful! I like it. Thank you for the effort!
graymatters··on Update on JetBrains’ Statement on Ukraine
As an independent nation Ukraine committed actual genocide against other ethnic religious population within its borders at least 3 times. 2 of them during the 20th century. Ukraine never acknowledged those, neither took responsibility, nor expressed any form of regret. If you think Ukraine is morally any better than Russia than you know no history. While very much against the invasion of Russia into Ukraine, Ukrainians should not be helped until they express genuine repentance for their historic crimes.
graymatters··on The failure of Amazon's Alexa shows Microsoft was right to kill Cortana
Is “Ok, Google” or Siri better? More successful? If you think so - please explain.
graymatters··on Show HN: I recreated Coursera with 150 free YouTube tutorials
Quite shallow selection. How were the videos selected vs. other videos on the same topic (and say similar length)? What are the credentials of the curator to convince curator’s choices are indeed worthwhile?

graymatters··on Why We’re Suing NSO
If you think it doesn’t you must believe in Santa Claus and I got a bridge to sell you.
graymatters··on The impotence of being clever
To become wise, rather than merely clever, two additional elements are necessary.

One is humility. Cleverness often leads to various forms of hubris. The most dangerous of which is to overvalue one’s deductions/decisions (as opposed to others’) because too often one’s previous deductions/decisions were “more right” than those of the others. “Right too often trap”.

The other one is experience. Experience teaches us that the problems/dilemmas often have more dimensions than one initially sees. Often times the non obvious dimensions are the key ones, rather than the ones we see originally. “Wrong dimensions trap”.

graymatters··on The impotence of being clever
LOL That’s a very clever observation! Do you feel impotent as the result?
graymatters··on Bettercap – Swiss Army Knife for 802.11, BLE, IPv4 and IPv6 networks
The article you reference, while an interesting memoir read, does not contradict the statement you disagree with and quote above. Pascual Jordan was a literal Nazi. This is undisputed. His ideology preceded his joining of the Nazi party, which was not opportunistic at all, but deliberate. The article sheds little, if at all, light on the second part of the quoted statement.
graymatters··on Why We’re Suing NSO
You’re suing NSO because it is not a USA based company tied into the US MIIC (military-intelligence-industrial-complex) and supporting legislators. You’re suing NSO because it is highly successful at what it does, putting the unsuccessful competitors who do have said ties to shame. Eliminating opposition via lawsuits is something we see increasingly use in the political system as well. Same players weaponizing the legal system.
graymatters··on Ask HN: How do you overcome feeling completely lost in life?
Volunteer. Go help other people. Something with commitment, not just casual. See how other people are trying to survive. Perhaps you’ll start appreciating how fortunate you are in the process. Take responsibility upon yourself. Stick through it.

Join the military. Join the police. Set a goal to pass and get accepted.

Start doing a sport. Track your progress vigorously. Commit to doing it for at least a year. Rain or sunshine, snow or mud.

graymatters··on ADHD medication not associated with cardiovascular risk

graymatters··on Holodomor
This is a blatant antisemitic lie peddled by the worst genocide committers in the world, namely the Ukrainians. Yes, they are worse than the Germans.
graymatters··on Holodomor
The famine of the early 1930s in Ukraine and some other territories of then USSR was a natural phenomenon, consistent with the history of every few years bad crops in these highly primitive agricultural territories. Prior to the Soviet rule, public organizations stepped in to help the victims and did so successfully (check the historic records of the Tzarist Russia on the subject). The Soviet rule eliminated such organizations, destroying the social support network for the case of bad crops. However, this is a far cry from deliberate genocide. Ukrainians weaponize this natural disaster to pursue their political goals.

The Ukrainians committed genocide against the Jewish population of Ukraine at least 3 times in the history. These genocides should be recognized by the German government and other international institutions before calling an unfortunate natural disaster genocide.
