Science North is a treasure! You can also see from that laser display how pleasing sounds have a stable, synchronized relationship whereas atonal key combinations do not
gravitronic··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
This feels like a negative summary with a lot of assumptions chained on.

Alternate take, dispensaries have enabled many people I know to get a reliable product that acts the same each time they buy it and use it, and let them dial in exactly what strain and quantity and method of ingestion works best for them. Before the commercialization one never had the diversity and reliability of product they have now.

Contrast that to the before times where people, as you put it, bought whatever the dealer was selling.

gravitronic··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
The desirable product to smoke is not the leaves, it's the bud. Sticky bud is considered better, dry bud considered worse
gravitronic··on Apple fixes new zero-day used in attacks against iPhones, Macs
Is there a trusted process on ios / macos to determine if you were attacked by these recent 0days? I hadn't upgraded to cover the last batch of 0days for a bit, and then safari crashed a few times in a row and one morning my open browser was on an full-page ad that seemed a bit suspicious as to how it ended up there.. I'm assuming web searching and installing some third party tool will lead to more trouble than a fix..
gravitronic··on CSS findings from the Threads app
I was like you until about a year or two ago, and then set out to learn it enough to implement a site layout without having to resort to copy and pasting things I don't understand.

It wasn't that hard, once you accept that it'll require it's own study and practice. I put in maybe 20 hours dedicated study and got a lot better out of it.

I did a few video courses on LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com) through my public library. I did a general CSS course and a flexbox CSS course. Then I set out to design pages I needed without pulling some random blog theme and calling it a day.

I've gotten a bit better at design as well, although it is a much intrinsic field than CSS and requires a lot more study. The biggest difference was once I treated the design stage with respect as its own discipline and started designing in a design tool (figma) instead of "doing it live" by trying to tweak the design in code as I went. It made me 100% focused in that stage at the design problems and the feedback loop got a lot tighter compared to editing and running code to see how it looked.

gravitronic··on How the new Threads app is made
In your opinion who is?
gravitronic··on How the new Threads app is made
s/React/React Native/

Pretty sure they're using it on web everywhere and IMHO that's a decent choice when you need state management / DOM updates.

React Native is a whole other ball of mud, taking UI decisions out of the main thread where phones want them to be and delegating them into a bolted on javascript environment.

gravitronic··on How the new Threads app is made
Any clues to what percentage is made with react native?

https://www.threads.net/t/CuW_fXZOgPc/ would suggest to me the answer is "not much"

gravitronic··on ToneMatrix
Since 2020 I built https://sequencer.party

Supports third-party plugins in a format called WAM2 (Web Audio Module version 2).

Collaborative, like Google Docs. Sign in and start a session, invite people. Turn a knob, and it turns for everyone.

Supports audio, midi, and video as well.

Supports custom Javascript sequencers (Function Sequencer plugin). You can (collaboratively) write a little javascript program, give it knobs dials and automateable parameters, and have it emit MIDI events.

There's some usability issues to still work on but it's quite fun to jam on. I used to host twitch sessions where people could sequence my TR-909 and minimoog, and then hear the instruments played back over twitch.

gravitronic··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study
They were physical controls but there was SO many of them and they all felt very cheap that it was its own sense of crappy cheap and likely to break UI.
gravitronic··on SMS phishers harvested phone numbers, shipment data from UPS tracking tool
Came here to say this! Only after reading about the leak here did I find the admission in the letter they sent, hidden under all this marketing copy about keeping you safe is our priority

Every Nissan I've driven in the last ten years had had terrible UI as well - more buttons switches and hat controls than my simulator flight stick

There's a lot of unclassified information about their historic capabilities, I'm pretty sure they can give a lot of detail without leaking anything not already public.

gravitronic··on Digital Audio Workstation Front End Development Struggles
I've built a modular midi / audio / video platform on the web, and encountered most of the pain points mentioned in the article.

https://sequencer.party

Some points:

- you need to move all sequencing and audio / midi work off the main thread. I use WebAudioModules and sequence all midi in the audio thread as well.

- you need to move all other heavy lifting off the main thread, for example for the multiplayer features I use YJS.. YJS runs in it's own worker to not stall the main thread

- you don't update the DOM, you very carefully redraw parts of SVGs or better, canvases.

gravitronic··on The rise of ChatGPT-enabled GitHub spam
Sure, here's another example comment that tries to use a more sarcastic tone:

"Oh boy, another brilliant idea for generating crappy code! Let's just automate our way to technical debt and maintenance hell. Who needs readable, maintainable code anyways? I mean, let's just dump a bunch of generated code into our open source projects and call it a day. Who cares if future developers will have to wade through an incomprehensible mess? I'm sure they'll thank us for our foresight and ingenuity. Let's just keep chasing those short-term efficiency gains and ignore the long-term consequences. What could go wrong?"

;)

gravitronic··on ChatGPT cannot build a simple working site from scratch
are you trying to get it to spit out the entire solution in one chat? It's easier for answering one-off questions when you are stuck.

I'm in the middle of converting some ruby code to javascript, so asking it something like how to split a string in nodejs into directory and file components results in a quick and correct answer.

The Idea Factory is a great book describing the magical period at Bell Labs where they invented the future. It's just mind boggling how much of today's world was discovered and invented there - from the transistor to information theory.

gravitronic··on Farmers ‘crippled’ by satellite failure as GPS-guided tractors grind to a halt
If the tire factory takes a day off, the truck in the field can still drive.

If the rubber factory takes a day off, the truck in the field can still drive.

etc, etc.

Can't talk to a specific single space computer with no fallback? truck in the field might as well be a potato.

gravitronic··on Farmers ‘crippled’ by satellite failure as GPS-guided tractors grind to a halt
What an insane dependency tree, that driving a truck in a field to plant some seeds requires a computer operating in space. I really hope there is a push-back on this unbounded complexity. Mind boggling.
