grapescheeseeon Faced with soaring Ds and Fs, schools are ditching the old way of grading

I have never seen this and I am from the US. I find it rather alarming. But, I would have abused such a system if it existed in my high school years. I might have gone on to a great college and failed out the first year as a result.

grapescheeseeon Delta, United sued for selling windowless 'window seats'

Seats 12A and 12F have no windows which are even viable. It should be stated in their seat maps since they are in the 'Comfort' section. Many other airlines include the window locations. As someone who flies often enough, and given a choice, I will never select them on the A321. I can understand how it would lead to a lawsuit.

grapescheeseeon Doomsday Book (2006) [pdf]

WBUR just aired an interview today with Brewster Kahle. It would be a very sad day if the Internet Archive stopped resolving, or was stopped from benefiting the common good.

grapescheeseeon Microsoft PlayReady – Complete Client Identity Compromise

Well, it sure seems to make a market for people who would/does pay for legitimate 4k video in their browser to pirate. I am happy to pay for streaming, but as the quality goes down so does any desire to shell out honest money.

grapescheeseeon Why Does My 'Efficient' Dishwasher Take a Zillion Minutes for a Load?

Meanwhile commercial dishwashers take all of three minutes per cycle. I would recommend buying commercial versions of any appliance if you're able. Parts are replaceable, made to be serviced, not choked full of eco marketing, or incompetent regulations which add to more waste in the long run.

grapescheeseeon She lived in a New York hotel for more than 40 years, but her life was a mystery

Over 800 days in hotel in the past three years. Its a rather difficult life, and hard to explain how it impacts you.

Time difference, doctor/dental visits, mail, family, and work life balance are brutal.

Getting a call when your partner totals a car, and ends up having one of their worst days, and just needs a physical person to see and comfort them really makes it seem pointless. Life happens and its hard enough when you're able to return home everyday.

grapescheeseeon Play Counter Strike 1.6, with full multiplayer, in the browser

I recall installing CS from CDs. I was so excited to play, but my internet was so slow it took basically the rest of the day to download the updates. Then, when I got into the game, some servers had mods and maps to download which took forever.

Needless to say, once I was playing I felt so gradified and cool. My dad brought home a 'flat' CRT a few months later from his work. It felt life changing at the time.

A while later, I thought it would be fun to try out some of the cheat packs.. It didn't take more than 15 minutes for a ban. Still have a VAC ban on record with Steam. 6,400ish days ago. Its an odd reminder, and badge of honor.

grapescheeseeon SJ police recover stolen cars using license-plate recognition and helicopter

It was not a public street. It was in a private parking lot. The hotel management was also happy to call and make a report with the license plate I provided them.

grapescheeseeon SJ police recover stolen cars using license-plate recognition and helicopter

I was on Fort Worth Texas about a year ago, and was staying at a hotel. Every few nights I saw a car driving around the lots there. It was equipped with 4 scanners on the front of it.

I stopped him one night, he had two laptops running some type of ALPR setup. He closed them pretty quickly.

He went on to tell me he was part of the police. So I asked, are you a police officer? No, he wasn't and never has been. He works for a company based in FW, that has contractors who funnel data to various entities. Used to find repossessions, stolen, and who knows what else.

He told me in so many word to get lost, and call the police to tell them he says hi, then speed off.

grapescheeseeon Emergency measures needed to rescue Great Salt Lake from ongoing collapse

Water resources are the ultimate control vector. Its not parties, or states, its power. It is very real how little is being done, and scapegoats are everywhere.
