grannyg00se··on Notch Playing Ludum Dare [video]
I can't help but think of how much money this guy has and how he's still at it, hacking away and streaming his program-a-thon. Seems like a good role model not only for creative programming but also surviving success.
grannyg00se··on Tell HN: How we bootstrapped to the #1 rated mattress on Amazon.com
I bought an essentia memory foam mattress years ago that still feels like new. I wonder how this considerably cheaper mattress compares in quality.
grannyg00se··on Pirate Bay founder is being held in solitary confinement without a warrant
If you're going to torture somebody because they're a troublesome inmate that needs punishing, that's one debate and I can imagine some arguments for that.

If you're going to torture somebody who hasn't even been found guilty yet, that's a different story.

grannyg00se··on Leo the Homeless Coder Finished His App, and You Can Download It Right Now
How did he reduce it to a game? According to the story the "narcissist" actually sat with this guy for many hours teaching him how to code. He gave his time and effort to teach someone new skills. New wealth was earned. Pretty great really.
grannyg00se··on Chromium: I just wanted to quickly hack an iframe blocker for personal use
Thanks for posting this. The code is easy to follow which is always a notable accomplishment. It's also a really good example of github usage including opening of issues, commenting on them, and closing them. And a pretty nice wiki as well.
grannyg00se··on Why I will never work out of an office again
"since you can’t go out cycling when it’s dark you are limited on your training time"

Did I miss something? Why can't you go cycling when it's dark?

grannyg00se··on Measles Cases Triple in U.S., Vaccine Refusal Here and Elsewhere to Blame
Wait....this is the largest outbreak since 1996 and all that happened was one kid got pneumonia and one woman had a miscarriage? These things happen every day. Seems like a lot of money, work, and debate over a relatively minute issue.

Even in that larger 1996 outbreak nobody died.

And we've got people comparing vaccine refusal to child abuse! If that's child abuse, you're going to have to take a serious look at every parent of an illiterate grade schooler. And while you're at it, your child abuse radar should be going crazy whenever you see an obese toddler.

grannyg00se··on Measles Cases Triple in U.S., Vaccine Refusal Here and Elsewhere to Blame
So are you saying that if you only wanted to give your child the vaccines that you had received as a child, you couldn't do that without also giving them a bunch of other unwanted vaccines?

Can you not vaccinate your child by your own selection and timeline?

grannyg00se··on Websmart, Inc. and 100,000 Vulnerable Websites
Teaching about security by looking for some basic low hanging fruit? Perhaps. But what he's also teaching is how to blame and shame, and needlessly tread into murky legal territory.
grannyg00se··on Websmart, Inc. and 100,000 Vulnerable Websites
Surprise, many websites are not secure. Does he go around testing people's door locks to see how vulnerable they are to being picked with a basic lock pick set? Maybe knock on some doors and tell the home owners that their home contractor doesn't take security seriously enough and demonstrate how easily the standard door lock can be picked?

I could understand if he was making a business out of this, selling improved security. But this way it just looks like he's out to show people that he knows something they don't know and publicly shame them into some kind of response.

grannyg00se··on I found Prezi's source code
How do you relate this to something like home security? You have valuables at your home. People can come in and take it with varying degrees of force. Are you prepared for the maximum force attack, or do you accept the typical security features which you know to be minimally effective?
grannyg00se··on The Power of a Pronoun
I have no reason to suspect that he wouldn't treat your hypothetical patch any differently than he did this one. I think this has very little to do with his opinion of women, and it seems a bit of a stretch to assume he hates women based on this.
grannyg00se··on The Power of a Pronoun
"to reject a pull request that eliminates a gendered pronoun on the principle that pronouns should in fact be gendered would constitute a fireable offense "

That's great. But that's not what Ben said. He said he rejected it for being too trivial for a pull request.

grannyg00se··on Snapchat's Evan Spiegel: Saying no to $3B, and feeling lucky
It is already impossible to prevent saving the image. Snapchat uesrs don't seem to care about that for the most part. What it does is create a whole new class of worthwhile photos. By sending via snapchat you are saying "this is just a throwaway image I wanted to send for a quick chuckle. No big deal." Whether the person takes the time/effort to save that throwaway image isn't really of any concern.

That's how I see it being used anyway. It's not being used with the expectation that there is literally no chance of the image being saved anywhere.

grannyg00se··on Until Yesterday, My Father Was the Longest-Held Hostage in U.S. History
The text of the article is more specific: "Longest-held American hostage in history".
grannyg00se··on Go Data Structures (2009)
make(* Point) seems much better than having a separate new keyword. Surprised to hear that was changed after just a few days.
grannyg00se··on Dear Facebook: You Suck
These things develop a culture though. The same friends you have on facebook may behave completely differently on a different platform.
grannyg00se··on Can I Be Trusted?
That's an interesting way to look at trust but it's highly dependent on your own internal thought process and phrasing.

"I trust he WON'T let go of the ladder."

That's the same as

"I trust he WILL keep the ladder secured."

I'd say trust isn't about what you think the person won't do. It's about the person living up to their word or implied contract. It can be phrased either as a will do or a won't do.

Ladder guy holding it implies he will hold it securely. Doctor with private info implies he WON'T share it irresponsibly. That could also be worded as an expectation that he WILL keep it private.

"I trust Bruce Schneier to not sacrifice his own principles and belief system in backdooring some code or otherwise compromising his work."

OR

"I trust Bruce Schneier to be true to his principles and belief systems and maintain the integrity of his work."

grannyg00se··on How I made an Android game from scratch in 23 days
Awesome job. It works....graphics are decent and sound is great.
grannyg00se··on Fructose: The Poison Index
Detrus is talking about proper food. You're talking about butter and mayo.

A huge part of the problem is that people equate these things just as you have. Mayo in particular is an abomination. What we have come to accept as "food" is tragic[1].

grannyg00se··on Uptime Robot
Same here. No feedback at all after clicking Signup. Clicked repeatedly.
grannyg00se··on World Renowned Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease
That's a nice ad hominem collection there. Not one point I could find about his actual claims. He didn't file his taxes properly? Bad patient review history? These things are not relevant to the scientific claims he puts forth.
grannyg00se··on World Renowned Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease
Another slam against overconsumption of sugar and processed foods. This guy may not have the best reputation but the advice doesn't seem all that bad.
grannyg00se··on FlyKly Smart Wheel
Uh...yeah...20mph isn't 25km/h even if you are in the EU. They could use an additional sentence there.

And worse...where does that leave Canada? Or any other of the 98.5% of countries that use the metric system?

grannyg00se··on FlyKly Smart Wheel
"It goes up to 20 mph (25 km/h) for a 30 miles (50 km) range."

The speed conversion is way off. But the distance conversion is pretty good. Wonder why that is.

grannyg00se··on Will Keyboards Become Obsolete As PCs Decline?
Agree. I know I already talk to myself in english when I'm reading code. Something like "Okay we have a data structure named users consisting of an array of objects. Each object has..."

The programming language is just a translation of ideas from my english language thinking to/from the computer. I don't see why it couldn't be more english like. To type it all out in that fashion would be very tedious, and even speaking it is more tedious than simply users = [{},{}...]

But with sufficient abstraction these things would become less and less verbose.

grannyg00se··on [dead]
He's in politics. They're all shades of the same color.

Except for Ron Paul ;)

Actually he's retired now so the statement stands without exception.

grannyg00se··on Formula 1′s Leading Team Has a Big Secret
You don't think everyone is doping to some degree as it is? I find that hard to believe. I think everyone at high level competition is enhancing.

So I support the notion that high level performance sports should allow performance enhancing drugs. That's what everyone is doing anyway. The way it is right now you not only have to enhance, and be great, but you also have to be a great cheater (i.e. not get caught doping). I don't like systems that give advantages to the best cheater.

grannyg00se··on Report: 110 people own 35% of Russia's wealth
"All we need to do is wake up and realize that the reality is not what we think it is"

Somehow I don't think a sudden realization is going to make a whole lot of difference. To make any difference we're going to need a complete upheaval of the mechanism and culture of the country. And not just any one country. The entire global financial system is geared to support and further this kind of imbalance.

grannyg00se··on How much can an extra hour's sleep change you?
To me it seems we have a culture that doesn't value well-being in general. People might say that they do, but the entire culture is set up against it. Sleep is just one more neglected aspect of well-being. We also have ridiculous working hours, insane commutes, pathetic diet and exercise habits, and a health record to show for it. Keeping busy at one's job is valued above most else.
